"TuneLoud Magazine "Vampire Hunter" Album & Band Review 2021"

When KILJIN invite you to go on a musical journey with them, you best take heed. Given the place the Michigan behemoth came from, a primeval, subterranean metal underworld, the prospect of plummeting into the depths of their twisted and explosive hard rock universe is enough to bring on a dose of the bends. Since their emergence, KILJIN have shown that brain-twisting heaviness doesn’t have to be dull-edged, and that it can even be a thing of exciting delight. In fact their 11 track debut album, “Master Of Illusion” proved beyond any reason of doubt that members Trevor Aumaugher (vocals, lead guitar), Tony Aumaugher (bass), Scott Spencer (rhythm guitar) and Bryant Aumaugher (drums) formed one of the best underground, classic metal bands on the planet.
KILJIN’s full length sophomore album, “Vampire Hunter” – released May 5th of 2021 – is here to certify and cement that claim. This compilation brings together all of the band’s, technical, songwriting and performing strengths, together with their sometimes oddball and manic tendencies. And rather than adhering to any preset templates this album becomes a highly creative and effective stampede which is KILJIN to the core.

Monolithic riffs, thunderous rhythms, screaming solos and soaring vocals abound, as KILJIN further injects their sound with a sinister edge that’s off kilter and immediate at the same time. From the opening title track “Vampire Hunter”, which follows the intro skit, “In Other News”, KILJIN build on their raging metal aesthetic with a cosmic heaviness that drag audiences into black holes of mystery and malice.

“Sign of the Witch”, offers no suggestion of reprise, as the guitars grind with overdriven grit, laying the foundation for the aggressive vocals which conjure images of danger lurking just below the surface. When the Michigan four-piece are rollicking along in pure metallic fury, it remains wondrous to behold. The music within is powerful, defiant and steeped in anguish, and shows the quartet at their most insanely powerful.

Moving forward, “Mankind” shows a band whose sound is akin to that of a fire-breathing monster, a towering metal monolith that destroys all it sees, while “Eat The Worm” displays a 360 degree vision of the band as they move between softer and louder sections.

All the while, the guitars continue to riff and shred with an unstoppable vengeance. “Asylum Take Me Home” is an absolute guitar fest, supported by a demonic rhythm and full-throated vocals.

“Changeling” and “Defend the Land” come straight from the classic KILJIN songbook: powerful, passionate metal, written and performed by one of the most creative and ambitious underground bands in the genre, and carrying such a weight that it’s capable of levelling mountains. By the time you press play on the relentless “Curse of the Mummy” and the closing “Exorcism”, it becomes apparent that KILJIN has brought back the narrative-driven album.

Just as “Master Of Illusion” was considered magnificent on so many levels last year, “Vampire Hunter” is a rich, beautiful record with layer after layer of six-string heaviness to sift through. KILJIN’s musical brilliance is on full display, and the fulcrum of their sound is arguably the greatest it has ever been. The booming vocals anchor the band’s sound while the instrumentalists have created a dynamic repertoire of rhythm and riffs, ready to dominate rock and metal across the globe - TuneLoud Magazine

"TuneLoud Magazine Debut Album, "Master of Illusion" Review"

KILJIN is a 4 piece Metal band out of Michigan. They have just released their 11 track debut album, “Master Of Illusion” which is now available on all major digital stores. One of the most remarkable things about this debut studio album is that the band manage to get practically everything right here. Shifting focus back to the roots of metal, KILJIN ramps up the intensity and volume in every way. Trevor Aumaugher on lead vocals explodes with a level of passion and exuberance that is nowhere to be found on any comparable records, while his guitar contributes some fiery solos. Tony Aumaugher drives his bass into the pocket of every song, while Scott Spencer on rhythm guitar delivers the beefiest riffs on the planet. Bryant Aumaugher ties it all together with his momentous and ever-steady percussive work.

“Master Of Illusion” doesn’t intend to be a fountain of invention, as it draws from the same basic premises that legendary bands of the genre solidified during its golden age. But the musical formula is not the issue here.

When KILJIN executes their recipe with fiery demeanor, they’re leaps and bounds ahead of their fellow genre-dwellers. With this album, that recognizable brand of emotionally-inspired metal has returned with a vengeance, and KILJIN resultantly feels alive and on top of their world.

From the moment the album opens with “Path of the Warlock”, the songs demonstrate a high level of skill from every member, with highly technical drum fills and creative guitar work. The songs’ instrumental sections are very impressive, with strong guitar solos.

Continuing this frame of mind and true to the assured direction of the album, the thunderous and somewhat cinematic “I’m Still Alive” roars triumphantly and embraces the signature classic chugging metal delivery, while “Personality Treason” retains the bone-crushing riffs and blazes with a slick, modern and punchy production without sacrificing the classic metal sound.

Moving forward, towards the hard-hitting “New Disease” and the guitar fest of “Beard of Wizard”, the arrangements are sometimes anthemic and to the point, as well as adventurous and exploratory at others, demonstrating the band’s drive to challenge themselves both as writers and players. The choruses often utilize rhythm-intensive, lunging riffs to spike the adrenaline in favor of monster chords and gleaming melodies.

The first thing you’ll notice about the title track “Master Of Illusion”, is how insanely huge and complex it sounds. Delivering more punch per square sonic inch than the genre has wielded in a long time, KILJIN set about to annihilate their instruments, shredding and riffing beyond belief.

But as dazzling and monstrous as the production and playing is, the album’s true brilliance lies in the songs themselves. The dynamic “Drowning In My Dreams” and the escalating slow-burn of “Point of No Change” being prime examples of the aforementioned statement.

“Cold” is also impressive, meaty and uber-catchy, with some interesting guitar-work woven around the edges, while “Impaler” also users the blistering dual guitars to its utmost advantage. KILJIN always has the ability to compose songs that go straight for the gut – personal, real, and right from the heart – which is what they do on the album closer, “My Reflection”.

I approached “Master Of Illusion” with realistic expectations, and merely hoped the band could put out a decent sounding and consistent album. This is considerably more than that, and easily the best classic metal album I’ve heard from any band – independent or otherwise – this year.

"The Band Camp Diaries KILJIN Review 2020"

Kiljin is back on the scene with a new studio album: Master of Illusion.
August 2020 - Kiljin is a band with a focus on creating music that blurs the lines between different influences. From 80s-tinged hard-rock to modern metal and Sabbath-like darkness, anything goes! Recently, the group released a new studio album titled “Master of Illusion,” which features 11 songs. The opening number, “Path of the Warlock” makes me think of classic bands such as Motley Crue or LA Guns, with a really powerful, old-school feel. The song “I’m Still Alive” has a great 80s vibe too, and an even darker sound, often reminiscent of iconic metal bands such as Slayer or Metallica, but definitely with its own personality. There are so many great songs on this release, and each track showcases the band’s diverse approach. However, “Drowning in My Dreams” is perhaps my personal favorite. It has a really smashing intro, and the song dives deeper into a mix between darker early metal a la Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, with later influences such as thrash metal.

"Rock Queen Review 2020"

A Michigan metal quartet, all belonging to one family, KILJIN are out to play pure metal, with an explosive individual twist. Former members of Known Felons and KISSTER (KISS tribute), they clocked up 20 years worth of American tours, with those bands. They’ve played support for many well-known bands, including Candlebox, Ratt, Brett Michaels, Quiet Riot and Motley Sure. Now, they’re ready to rock, once more.

Path Of The Warlock – Classic sleaze riff intro’ing, on a very trad metal refrain, complete with evil laugh. Very Rose-esque vocals. Definite strong hits of 90’s metal here. Easy rhythms, lots of melody, delivered in a loose arrangement, with an easy groove. Comfortably old school, mid-paced, with a big catch, reminiscent of G’N’R’s ‘UYI’ era. It just rolls along, happily, on an upbeat tide).

I’m Still Alive – Heavy hitting intro, moving into a slightly darker melody. Breaking down, comfortably, incorporating more drum rolls and vocals just slightly edgier. This just gels together easily. Very natural feel to it. Flowing well, without missing a beat. Plenty colourful riffage. Good production standard. Staying with that marginally darker thread, without missing a beat. Just a very intuitive sense to it. Again, a lot of Rose-esque vocal strength, pulling it off well, in terms of sustain and consistency. Great screaming riffs, ending.

Personality Treason – Skidding into the opening steer, with powerful riffs and catchily timed drum rolls. Vocals here just very slightly quieter, but growing gradually louder and still sustaining that strength and key well. Plausible lyrics. A good beat to it, feeling it, audibly. Lots of melody, again and some great intricate riffs. This one slides along, effortlessly. Skilfully hit vocal tones, just after the mid-section. That evil laugh returns. The rhythms are the strength behind this track. Plenty of time to revel in it, before the smooth fade-out. Just a tiny bit of dead space, at the end, but barely noticeable.

New Disease – Opening on a bluesy groove. Then right into the mood). Liking the sound of those Rose-esque vocals. The drumming gives this a colourful backdrop. It’s another rhythmic number, with plenty of melody. That consistency runs throughout it, melodically, rhythmically and in the audio values. Tasty bit of fret-bending, around the mid-section. Great pitch alternations and every note’s hit, with precision. You’ve got to admire those vocals. These guys have just got their sound together and it all works in complete synch.

Beard Of Wizard – Dramatic thunderstorm intro, with narration of a legend, spoken with true feeling, evoking real intrigue. Then right into an electrifying riff and powered vocal. This track’s the versatility deal maker. It’s a track likely to appeal to all fellow alternatives and lovers of magic. Those vocals just fit that melody. Riding along, on the crest of a riff). It’s like a new Rose, with an added twist. Just a delightfully mysterious track.

Master Of Illusion – Heavy breakdown intro. Succinctly timed, harmonised riff and drum sound. Moving into a spaced out, breathier section, before taking it up, into Metallica-esque speed riffs, with all the atmosphere of ‘Kill ‘Em All’. Vocals adding a deliciously creepy taint. Once more, it’s got that easy groove to it. Drums spacing out those hits, strategically, as the riffs grow more intense and frenetic. Lots of power stacked up in here. Riff wizardry takes it higher. Instrumentals account for the greatest portion of this track, but if anything, it highlights the vocal section’s significance, even more. Getting more virtuoso, just before the end.

Drowning In My Dreams – Smooth riff and drum intro, with a clearly pronounced heaviness. Stacks of groove again. Breaking it down, with pure perfection. A little more vocally dramatic. Moving, so easily, from one tempo, to another, playing with pace. It all lines up together again. Melodically strong, still, with loads of expertly delivered riffage and the track just flies along. A few tricky notes in there, well handled, without an issue. Very rhythmic and moving to an end, with complete confidence.

Point Of No Change – Taking a different turn now, with a beautifully played acoustic intro, quickly joined by electric riffs and vocals, showing their softer side now. Collectively, it’s very ‘Civil War’-esque. Exploding, into a passionate, fiery refrain. Energy level ratcheted right back up again). Alternating the pace, a bit, but handling it deftly. Thought-provoking lyrics. Well performed, dramatic drum section. Bringing it up and down, with self-assured ease. More melodic riffage, giving it so much feeling. Notes impressively sustained. Returning to the gentler sound, for the outro.

Cold – Vibrant riffage intro’s. Nicely sustained. Very familiar sound. Memorable, uplifting energy, easily accessible pace and it just climbs higher, to the peak. Well-placed stop-start section, 3/4 in. Once again, echoing G’N’R’s ‘UYI’ era, with a few added individual twists. Just so assured and rightly so. Coming to another easy end. Similarities to Black Tide’s ‘Let Me’.

Impaler – Great riff sound opening, onto an equally impressive volley of drums. Powerful passion in the lyrics. A very visual track. Something of a classic anthem to this. Interweaving shades of light and dark. Drums gaining in power. Still handling those vocals confidently, adding a stronger bass presence and more pronounced scales, but keeping it melodic and throwing in a few more varied arrangements. A little more complex, structurally. Gorgeous bit of riff sustain, towards the end, fading out smoothly, on a beautifully metallic sound.

My Reflection – (Bonus) – Moving carefully and softly, onto a gorgeous velvet riff. Poignant lyrics. Into a cautiously paced refrain, compounded by the contemplative vocals. Now surrounding the delicacy of the lyrics, with a wall of comforting riffage. Demonstrating the many facets of KILJIN, moving, so fluidly, between so many moods, always so consistently and cohesively. There’s a lot of melodic and lyrical beauty in this ideally placed closer. Coming to a passionate end, with each segment synchronised.

Overall – An apt album title, ‘Master Of Illusion’ certainly proves that KILJIN have mastered their own sound. Featuring strong resemblances, throughout, to GNR’s ‘UYI’ era, perhaps the title’s no surprise either, but it unarguably cements KILJIN in the minds and memories of listeners, for all the right reasons. Proficient, professionally produced, stacked with fulsome melodies and seamless sound, throughout, ‘MOI’ is a must listen, for 2020.

"Sleeping Bag Studios Music Video review 1 2020"

Let it be said, when I go, I’ve specifically asked to be cremated, have my ashes loaded into the hollow barrel of the body of an acoustic guitar, and then have it smashed to pieces in one final puff of soul-smoke & glory to finish my story. But KILJIN has got me re-thinking all this. After watching this video for “I’m Still Alive,” I’m realizing now, that it’d be verifiably much more badass to have some dude play drums on my coffin along with a whole band jammin’ out wild Metal solos & thunderous riffs & amped-up gnarlyness on top of my grave moments before I’d be livin’ six feet under for the rest of eternity.

LISTEN. Believe me when I say, you can sense the enthusiasm, excitement, and buzz growing around this Michigan-based Metal band KILJIN – you’ll see it leap right off the pages of their social media in posts surrounding their new record Master Of Illusion, you can hear it in the inspired attack they’re laying down in their performance – and good LORD can you see the monumental effort they’re putting into their music & career with the video for their lead-single “I’m Still Alive!” This thang is straight-up like a movie y’all – you get nearly ten minutes of solid wall-to-wall kickassery goin’ on here to watch & listen to, all taking place in a graveyard setting while the deadly sound of KILJIN comes out with gripping intensity to haunt your bones at the same time. Not only do they have a savage Metal sound that’s guaranteed to find an audience – but this band is clearly putting in the WORK to take their music straight to your face wherever you are – a video as rad & involved as this is SHOULD BE NOTICED – and thankfully, you can see that it has already been getting plenty of love out there around the internet since its release. I’ll tell ya this much…you wouldn’t see a band like KILJIN put in this much effort & having this much fun onscreen, or sounding this invested into each and every second of a mammoth nine & a half-minute-plus long tune if they didn’t 100% believe in the material – these guys come out large & in-charge with resounding confidence, crunchy riffs, and killer vocals – they’ve got a wicked video supporting “I’m Still Alive” – check it out below! - Sleeping Bag Studios

"Sleeping Bag Studios Music Video Review 2 2020"

We were introduced to the killer sounds of KILJIN through the video for “I’m Still Alive” posted up here at our pages at the end of last month – and now we’ve got more from these minstrels of Metal & mayhem for you to dig on here in November with another savage cut sliced from their debut record, Master Of Illusion. If you look at the lineup of tunes you’ll find on their album, you’ll see this Michigan-based four-piece is literally incapable of rocking for anything less than at least five & a half-minutes long – KILJIN is servin’ up MEATY tunes y’all…epic stuff, all tightly played by what’s clearly a wildly talented band. One would have to assume from the past cut we’ve heard, and this one here in “My Reflection” that they’re likely praying to the alter of Dio as so many devout Metal-heads continue to do to this very day…and even though there is an inherently mischievous vibe that runs through the energy between KILJIN, you’ll definitely find they take themselves much more seriously than say, something like Tenacious D that tends to be the closest thing out there rocking with such dedicated traditional roots when they’re at their heaviest. KILJIN takes it all that much further into the extreme…they’re having fun, but make no mistake – they clearly eat, sleep, and breathe Metal, and they’re here to rock each & every one of you out there. “My Reflection” is a wickedly rad dose of what they’re capable of – they essentially give it all to ya here in this one highly dynamic single as it blazes through the enormity of its sonic structure; it also happens to be the extremely justifiable finale of their album Master Of Illusion to end it on all the right notes. From classic Metal influences & heavy groove-Rock vibes – KILJIN transitions through this nine-plus-minute behemoth with professional precision & unpredictable live-wire energy surging from your screens & speakers – check it out for yourself below! - Sleeping Bag Studios

"Sleeping Bag Studios Music Video Review 3 2020"

I’ve been tellin’ ya loud & proud since around the end of October when we were first introduced to the badass music of KILJIN through their single “I’m Still Alive” that this mischievous band of heavy hitters is just as much about creating genuine fun as they are here to rock the fuck out – and if this savage new slice from their album Master Of Illusion called “Path Of The Warlock” doesn’t prove it to ya, I’m not sure what would! This whole crew has gotten right into it this year, and the excitement in KILJIN has certainly been translating to listeners & viewers around the globe – each video they’ve put out has an authentically gritty & grounded DIY feel to it, and it’s a style that seems to suit this band perfectly. Essentially, if they’ve got the time to make a video, they’ve got the means & material to make it happen – and they have been, all throughout 2020, from the cuts I’ve mentioned already, to other tracks we’ve featured here at our pages like “My Reflection” – and of course, they’ve got much more floating around the ether online for ya as well. Dig the work ethic and the enthusiasm! I can think of a great many artists/bands out there that could learn a significant lesson or two from the KILJIN playbook about how to go about getting your music out there into the world. Certainly doesn’t hurt that they display wild talented musicianship throughout “Path Of The Warlock” – and the epic storyline video they’ve got to support it expands this whole cut to cinematic proportions, reaching nearly nine & a half-minutes in length. These guys are just trying to get to their next show, and this freakin’ warlock comes lurking around after they’re dropped off in the middle of nowhere by their weirdo backwoods Uber driver…and you’d think even THAT might be enough to stop KILJIN from throwing down a show, but hellllllllllllllls no! Amplifiers be damned! KILJIN has no problem at all setting their gear right up on “The Path Of The Warlock” in the middle of nature and getting right up in his grill on his home-turf – and in the process, as always, they keep us relentlessly entertained, no matter where they are. - Sleeping Bag Studios

"Sleeping Bag Studios Music Video review 4 2021"

“We do not need to know the Future, for we have seen the Present and the sight is more than we can bear.”

If you were following our pages towards the end of last year, KILJIN is definitely a name you’re familiar with by now – we’ve featured several of their cuts from their debut record Master Of Illusion, from our first impression with their single “I’m Still Alive,” all the way to the more recent release of their epic self-shot video for “Path Of The Warlock” towards the end of November in 2020. Back with another stellar slice of Metal mayhem & mischief culled from their debut album – they’ve not only filmed themselves another stellar video to support it, but they’ve really put their songwriting & musicianship on display throughout “Point Of No Change” in a way that no one out there could miss the quality that comes along with it, no matter how amped-up their antics might be onscreen while you’re listening. Essentially what I’m saying is – YES this band openly embraces the roots of the genre and many of its overtly dramatized tendencies – proudly; but make NO mistake – just because they’re into it, just because they can have a lil’ bit of fun at the same time as rocking the fuck out, doesn’t mean they’re not backing up their material with serious substance & putting everything they’ve got into the music they make as well. Listening to the prescient lyricism of “Point Of No Change” and the killer instrumentation that comes with it…I mean…you’ve gotta give credit where credit is due – KILJIN was already looking long into their crystal ball making this first record of theirs, and as a result, they can now literally prove directly through a single like “Point Of No Change” with its grim perspective & bold observations, that they were in fact, always a step ahead of the rest in seeing how the twisted pieces of the puzzle that is humanity fitting together…or how they don’t, at all, for that matter, based on choices we’ve made as a society. You see what we’re saying? Don’t go thinkin’ you’re just in for some meathead Metal tunes when it comes to the music of KILJIN – they’ve got something tangible and extremely real going on with their material that’ll rip you a new one through the badassery of their musicianship, or through their savage vocals & thought-provoking lyricism – one way or the other, KILJIN makes a massive impact & will leave a lasting impression on ya. Check out their latest cut “Point Of No Change” below! - Sleeping Bag Studios

"Sound Chick Interview 2020"

Interview with KILJIN

December 14, 2020 | Haley Pearl

Please welcome KILJIN and their debut album, Master of Illusion, to the heavy metal scene. The SoundChick had the wonderful opportunity to interview this family band to get the scoop behind their music, and how these musicians formed several other bands. KILJIN members, Trevor Aumaugher, Tony Aumaugher, Bryant Aumaugher, and Scott Spencer, show that the true passion behind the music is having fun with people you love. Listen to the interview below to learn how this family band formed. In addition to KILJIN, these members have formed other bands, such as KISSTER, THE KIEFERS, and they discuss during our conversation about starting more. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this excitement - The Sound Chick

"Jamsphere Magazine Interview 2020"

How long have you been performing and recording as KILJIN, and how did the project come together?
KILJIN: We are all musicians and have been touring Michigan with our former bands, and we are also huge metal heads. We wanted to start a new metal band with a twist. We started writing music for the album and recording almost immediately after we formed the band in early 2020.

Who have been your major influences in your writing and playing style?
KILJIN: Some of our major influences would be kiss, Metallica, Megadeath, Ozzy, Dio, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Motley Crue and more.

If I was to turn on your media player right now, which artists/songs would I most likely to hear on your recently played list?
KILJIN: pry a little David Bowie, maybe some queen, Metallica, Dio. Been on an 80s metal kick lately. ALSO, our debut album, “Master of Illusion” would be on there as well.

What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with rock and metal listeners?
KILJIN: Some elements of our music that I feel will grab a hold of listeners would be a bit of everything. We have powerful vocals, we have killer solos, we have hard hitting drums, we have smashing bass and insane riffs and more and I think once people start listening to our album and music, they won’t be able to turn it off.

With the music industry always changing and evolving, what are the things you like and don’t like about it currently? And if you could change anything about it, what would it be?
KILJIN: Right now, we love how easy it is to get music to the fans via websites, digital platforms, YouTube and etc. The digital age has helps in many ways in allowing bands to distribute their music in many ways and allow the fans to listen and view their music on all sorts of platforms. ONE THING I would love to see is record labels start sending out the scouts! A LOT of talent out there and I think if we get rid of the term, “SCOLICITAION” and start scouting for new talent and ideas, the music scene and industry would start to do a 180 and start to return to greatness again. HOWEVER, as I said before with the digital age in the year 2020, it’s a lot easier for bands and musicians to DO IT THEMSELVES and become successful themselves without a label. I think now a days bands just want to be recognized for their talent and want to be able to make a living doing what they love to do. Fame and fortune is nice, but it’s nicer to just have fun and be able to actually make a living doing something you are good at and what you truly love to do.

What’s your view on the current state of rock and metal in general?
KILJIN: We feel Metal and rock has never been lost! It’s always been their lurking and waiting. Right now the situation is great. I feel metal and rock are starting to come back more than ever. People are sick of the crap and are ready to get back to when music was at its finest and meant something. PLUS, let’s not forget, that Metal heads and Metal fans are the most loyal fans in the world! It’s time to rock again!

Do you ever write a song with current musical trends, formulas or listener satisfaction in mind, or do you simply write, focused on the band’s own vision?
KILJIN: We just write tunes. We take our feelings, our hearts and souls and put them all into every song we write. You could even kind of say every song is like a diary and/or a story. We try and provoke a thought and add intense imagination to every song we write so when you listen to our music and listen to the lyrics, you feel like you are there, living the experience.

Could you describe your creative processes? How do start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Is it a democratic process between the members, and who does what?
KILJIN: All of our writing styles are the same, which is, we write music, most of the time, individually. Someone will come up with an idea, or a riff and then when we get together, we use that and add on to that idea and go from there.

Where do you do most of your recording and production work?
KILJIN: We record, produce, mix and master all of our own music in our recording studio, Clean It Up productions and Studio. We love doing it ourselves and it’s a lot of fun. We can spend hours in the studio and it seems like minutes.

What would you consider a successful, proud or significant point for KILJIN so far?
KILJIN: Getting the album finished and distributed on every digital and music platform. We are very proud of our debut album, “Master of Illusion” and we feel everyone will enjoy it very much. We put a lot of work into it and was a lot of fun doing it and I think it shows in the recordings. Every song has a cool feel and will immerse you into a new world.

If someone has never heard your music, which 5 keywords would you personally use to describe your music?
KILJIN: exciting, powerful, unusual, unique, imaginative

Is there a particular song on your debut album “Masters of Illusion”, in which you feel the band delivered its most perfect performance, on all levels, to date? And is there maybe one song that you keep thinking you should have done a little differently in some way?
KILJIN: That’s hard because we feel every song turned out great and our fav always changes. BUT, right now, pry a tossup between Master of Illusion, Impaler, Path of the Warlock or Beard of Wizard. It’s a tough one. Can’t really say what we would have done differently. Were pretty happy with what the end result was.

How long did you take to complete the album from its conception to release date, and which song took up the most time to record on the album?
KILJIN: A lot of the songs we already had written and ready to record. We are constantly writing music and have a lot of music ready for production. This album took about 1 year from conception to release date. Master of Illusion took the most time to record.

What do you feel makes “Masters of Illusion” standout in the current rock and metal markets?
KILJIN: We feel this KILJIN and our debut album, “Master of Illusion” stands out right now, because it is the perfect blend EVERYTHING. It has the perfect blend of vocals, guitars, bass, drums and more. It’s the perfect blend of Heavy Metal chaos, BUT with its own style and unique twist. Listen to our album and you will see!

Do you have a personal favorite track amongst the tracks on the album that has a specific backstory and/or message and meaning very special to the band?
KILJIN: Master of Illusion is pry one of our favs because of the meaning. The meaning being, that our reality is false and there are “OTHERS” who try and influence your perception of time, space and reality itself. You have to see through the confusion and stop their intrusion, and you have be the master of your own illusion. It’s the only way.

Creative work in studio environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two do you ultimately prefer and why?
KILJIN: love them both in different ways. We love being in the studio creating new music and recording new music. BUT, we love performing and entertaining for a HUGE crowd of people. We love the roar of the crowd and there is no better feeling then when you have tons of people going crazy and appreciating the hard work and blood and sweat and tears we put into all of this, because it’s all for YOU, our fans!!

What’s your favorite motto, phrase or piece of advice, you try to live or inspire yourself by?
KILJIN: HERE are two of our favs, “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams” and “Sing as though NO ONE can hear you”.

How essential do you think video is in relation to your music? Do you have a video you would suggest fans see, to get a better understanding of your craft?
KILJIN: I think music videos and live videos have played a HUGE and important part in musicians’ careers. The point of a music video, is to promote that song because a visual will help people get into the music and sometimes understand the meaning. Everyone loves a good movie, and there is no exception to that when it comes to music videos. We, as people, want to see something visually exciting, and so when you put a video behind music, it makes it more fun and interesting and helps people see another side of that song or musician that they might not have seen or realized.

As a band, do you have a specific musical vision or goal that you want to achieve in the near future?
KILJIN: FIRST thing is FIRST. We, as a band, told ourselves a long time ago, it’s all about the fun! Most important thing is, to have fun!! As long as we are having fun doing something we love to do, then it makes it all worth it.
AND we are having fun, so, as far as I’m concerned, we have completed our goal. Thanks www.KILJIN.com.

"Music Trails Interview 2020"

Lead Singer and lead Guitarist from KILJIN joins us today to speak about their newest EP Master Of Illusion:

Thanks for joining us! For those of you who don’t know what you do can you explain a little bit?

Hello and thank you for your time. My name is Trevor and I am the Lead Singer and lead Guitarist from Michigan Heavy Metal band, KILJIN.

How did the band first get started?

The idea for KILJIN came about a year ago. We decided we wanted to get back to the roots of metal while still offering our own unique style and twist. We are all former member for KISSTER, A Tribute to KISS. We were having a blast doing that for a while but We really wanted to start a unique metal band with a unique sound, style and twist. So we did just that and KILJIN was born.

“Master Of Illusion” is filled with 11 singles bringing in new listeners into your musical world. What was the overall inspiration behind the EP?

The inspiration behind our debut album was simple. Our love for old school metal. We wanted to create a band that would bring that feeling back but with its own unique style and twist. Master of Illusion is all about telling a story through music. Its about mixing light and dark together to get something wild. It’s about twisting your mind and imagination into something new. It’s about good and evil battling in a world or fantasy and chaos. We really wanted to give the fans something familiar but also something they have never heard before! Our biggest inspiration has been the fans as well as tell a story through out the album itself.

How would you describe your sound to someone who just listened to your music for the first time?

I would tell them that our sound reminds you of when metal was at its finest. When metal ruled the land. I would say we are kind of a cross between dio, megadeath, metallica, black sabbath, and judas priest but WITH a unique twist and sound. We feel we have created something fresh while staying true to our metal roots. If you visit our website, www.kiljin.com or visit any one of the streaming music platforms, you will see for yourself why our album has been reviewed as the, “Best Metal Album of the Year”, and you will truly understand that unique style that is KILJIN. We will twist your fantasy!

What were some of the biggest projects you’ve worked on?

We are all former members of other bands, including, KISSTER, A Tribute to KISS. We spent alot of our time over the last 20 years touring the state, releasing albums, performing with artists such as Candle Box, Brett Michaels, Ratt and more. KISSTER was a huge project that we all dedicated alot of our time in. Right now, we are working hard and concentrating all of our effort into KILJIN. We are really proud of KILJIN and its the biggest project we have going at this moment.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned this past decade?

The biggest lessons We have learned as a band is that, its all about having fun! Also, that the music industry has changed so much and its NOT what it used to be. This day and age if a band is ready to make it, you better be ready to do it on your own! BUT, its all about the ride and the fun you have as a band.

How has these past few months of quarantine affected you all creatively?

The past few month of Covid Quarantine has been frustrating because we want to go out and perform live. We have a great stage show and we are ready to show the world what our live show is all about. However, the quarantine has NOT stopped or slowed down KILJIN. We have been hard at work writing and creating fresh and unique music as well as continued to record new albums, videos, photo shoots, jingles and more. It has given us a chance to build our following and fan base before we go out and perform. BUT when the day comes, KILJIN will be ready to ROCK YOU ALL and give you ALL live performance that you have never seen before!

What advice do you have for anyone interested in starting their own band?

Practice and work hard! Most of all, have fun!

And no matter what anyone tells you, NEVER STOP BELIEVING IN YOUR MUSIC!!

With music you can reach the whole world on another scale. In what ways have you seen the physical effect of your music and those who listen?

Well, KILJIN tries to write a story with every piece of music we compose. Every song tells a story and will take you into another realm of imagination and excitement. Not only that, but it also gives us a chance to use our music as an outlet or a diary or sort. SO far, all the feedback we have received and all the reviews we have received has been positive. Everyone likes the story each song tells and all of our fans really seem to enjoy the music.

Which artists have influenced you through your musical journey?

Some artists that we personally have been influenced by growing up were, Kiss, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Dio, Iron Maiden, David Bowie, Metallica, Megadeath, and more, and we feel our music stays true to our influences while still offering something new and fresh with a unique sound and style. Having influences are great, BUT you have to find your own style and sound along withe way. KILJIN has found it!

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned from the Michigan music scene?

The biggest lessons we have learned as band is to work hard and continue to evolve and grow as a band. The music scene in Michigan, like everywhere else, is tough and you have to grow and evolve to keep up with an ever changing industry and scene.

What are your goals for the rest of 2020?

KILJIN’s goals for 2020 are pretty laid out. We just released our debut album, “Master of Illusion”, which is available now on all streaming platforms as well as our website www.KILJIN.com and we just released a new line of merchandise and clothing. We are hoping the covid epidemic is over with soon so KILJIN can start performing live, but until then, we will continue to flood the scene with KILJIN! We are working on our 2nd album right now and hope to have it done soon and available soon for purchase. We are also working on some music videos as well as our live show. SO, our goal is simple.. Just keep growing and growing as a band and keep offering the fans a taste of Metal with a twist. KILJIN’s band motto says it all, “No Excuses, Just Kick Ass Music” Thanks!

In an era of uncertainty and chaos, KILJIN has not stopped. Concentrating on Creating new fresh music, as well as recording videos and live internet performances, KILJIN has continued to push through the chaos.

We caught up with the band for an exclusive interview on Camden Monthly…

What inspired you to get into music?
ALL of us in KILJIN were inspired from an early age to become musicians. We are all family and have been performing together since kids. The first time we saw our first music video, which happened to be a KISS video, we were hooked and from then on and we all knew we wanted to become musicians. We all have a deep passion for music and performing and the roar and response of the audience alone have always been a huge inspiration as well. We all have been performing and entertaining from a very young age. We got our guitars and drums when we were just toddlers and have been jamming and performing together ever since. We started out performing at recitals , school talent shows, private parties, etc.. and then quickly moved on to perform in clubs, bars, festivals and more.

How would you describe your music?
KILJIN would describe our music as a Heavy Metal, but also having it’s own unique style and sound. It is more of a Fantasy-Dark-Mythical-Story Telling-Heavy metal. Every song has a story and will take you on a journey of wonder and amazement. It will twist your imagination into ways you never thought possible and will take you on a Heavy Metal ride!

What would you say is your recording and song writing style?
KILJIN’s song writing style is more of an independent style. We usually will write independently and then later will collaborate together.

Where would you like to see your music career in 5 years time?
KILJIN sees ourselves still creating music and still performing and still having fun and continuing to grow and evolve as a band. Every band and musician would like to be able to pay the bills with their music and be famous and etc..,, but no matter what happens, it’s all about the fun and the passion you have. KILJIN will never stop and will never give up our passion. 5 years from now, we will still be releasing new music , videos and will still be having a great time doing it. Life is short..,,, Have a little fun.

"StepKid Magazine Review 2020"

Master of Illusion is a new album from Michigan-based metal band KILJIN. I hesitate to refer to their sound as “old school” because it makes it seem dated or retro or something. However, it’s old school in the sense that it is very high quality and on par with many of the truly iconic metal bands I remember from the late 80s-early 90s. Even the album cover art measures up to all those classic covers (Megadeth, Testament, Acrophet etc), the imagery of which has been etched in our brains forever.

870283

This is metal in its purest form. By almost any conceivable metric, the performances are impeccable. Despite the fact that the fact that KILJIN was formed in 2020, these are established musicians with strong technical ability. They don’t cut any corners. The vocals are sung in that dramatic, theatrical manner reminiscent of Iron Maiden, one of the most challenging styles for any vocalist. Yes, this guy really does sing that well. I used to watch Headbangers Ball on MTV back in the day, and this is as good or better than anything that ever aired on that program. The guitars feature some robust distortion, but it doesn’t obscure the sonic detail or rhythm.

In terms of content, the songs reference a lot of familiar fantasy motifs like warlocks, wizards, death and magic. The track Beard of Wizard is particularly creative with its ominous spoken world monologue and killer guitar shredding. It’s a masterpiece. My other favorite jam is the opener, Path of the Warlock, which has an instantly impressive guitar intro and is catchy in a way that’s not typical of this genre. Anyway, I’m obviously a fan of this album. It’s awesome, and you should check it out.

How did you come up with your band name?

We came up with it on our own. We made it up off the top of our heads. We wanted to create a band name that no one else had in the world. That is why we went with KILJIN. We wanted a unique, stand-alone name that people have never heard before.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Michigan, located in the USA. The metal/rock scene here is wonderful. It’s a thriving scene where people can express themselves with heavy metal music and chaos. KILJIN is here to make it an even better place to be!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest release is our debut album entitled, “Master Of Illusion” which was recently released wherever music is streamed, including iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, Napster and more.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Some of our biggest influences would have to be bands that we listened to growing up. Bands like, Metallica, Megadeth, Dio, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Queensrÿche, KISS, and more have been huge influences in our lives and on our music.

What first got you into music?

When I first saw KISS live as a boy, and I saw and felt all the excitement, is when I knew I wanted to be a performer and give a live show that would amaze and astonish. We all got instruments at a very young age, and from that point on, we thrived! We have all been performing since we were young.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

That’s a tough one. So many great bands have influenced us and there are MANY that we would be honoured to collaborate with. Some off the top of my head def would be KISS and maybe Metallica. For a current band, I would have to say, 5 Finger Death Punch or maybe Avenged Sevenfold.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We would love to play OZZFEST because it would be great to perform with all the talented musicians that we look up too. Besides Woodstock, It’s one of the most recognizable festivals in the world and we would love to be a part of the chaos.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

The weirdest gift would have to be a homemade guitar pick made from a toenail (Okay, that’s definitely the winner so far – Rick), ALSO, once a fan gave us a little shrine that contained pictures of our heads glued to a Bonsai Tree? Not really sure what that was about or what the meaning was, but damn it was different. Lmao!!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for all the support you have and continue to give KILJIN. A musician or band is NOTHING without fans. And make sure to hold on tight because KILJIN is about to take you on a chaotic ride of hardcore metal! It’s time we all make music what it’s supposed to be!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Tough one. David Bowie.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We enjoy the energy of being on stage. Being in front of a huge crown that is screaming their heads off. We feel right at home when we’re in front of a roaring crowd and it makes us want to get crazy! The thing we hate the most is NOT performing.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

SCOUTING. We would like to see the day when a talented band can get heard and noticed through their talent and NOT on who they know in the business. SEND OUT THE SCOUTS!! Time to discover great music again! Start going to clubs and watching local bands. Scout out new talent.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

The first KISS album.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

All are awesome in their own ways. But my favs are CD’s and Downloads. Digital downloads make it easier than ever nowadays to get your music to the fans.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We have performed with MANY major acts in the past including Brett Michaels, Ratt, Candlebox, Quiet Riot and more, HOWEVER, our most fave performance was when we played a benefit for a young boy who wanted to see us live before he passed. I still get chills when I think about it and it was our fave show of all time. We happily performed for him and made it a show he would never forget!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I think I would go to law school or dental school. Become a Lawyer or Dentist.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Peewee Herman, Mr. Bean, Ernest P Worrell, and the trailer park boys. It would be a crazy, surreal party! LMAO

What’s next for the band?

Right now, we just released our debut album, “Master Of Illusion” which is available on ALL streaming platforms. Next, we are concentrating on advertising the band and growing a following. We cannot perform live right now because of the Covid pandemic, so right now we’re just recording music and getting ready for our “Master of Illusion Tour” which will be kicking off in the, hopefully. near future. We also can’t wait to get back in the studio and work on our next album. We got a bunch more songs written and ready to record.

"Reflections of Darkness Review 2020"

Most of the times it’s a bad idea to work with your family, KILJIN sound awesome at least while doing so. Let’s check the bands press text quick and see if things sound right: “KILJIN is a 4-piece Metal band out of Michigan. We are 4 family members who love to perform and have a great time. With our former bands, KNOWN FELONS and KISSTER (KISS Tribute Band), we toured the state of Michigan for 20 years performing at venues all across the great lakes state. We have opened up for such artists as CANDLEBOX, RATT, Brett Michaels, QUIET RIOT, MOTLEY CRÜE and more. We decided to start KILJIN because we love old school metal and love playing it. We thought the world was ready for Metal and Rock and Roll to take over once again. Our music speaks for itself.”

Most press texts blow things out of proportion with the intent to sell the stuff, these guys do it because it’s their sense of humour (I really, really hope so). Sure they play solid as fuck US Metal and I am pretty sure they already have a loving audience or will earn them soon but they failed to turn my brain into mush (VAN HALEN’s ‘Eruption’ did that decades ago, sorry guys). Trevor Aumaugher on vocals is quite a character vocal-wise, he sounds a bit like ROSE TATTOO’s Angry Anderson and even reminds me a bit of Bon Scott in a Heavy Metal setting. Trevor and Scot (Spencer) on guitars provide lots of kick-ass riffs and old-school melodies that will satisfy the Metal masses while Tony Aumaugher (bass) and Bryant Aumaugher (drums) provide the rhythm and pacing.

Conclusion: Check out ‘Impaler’ or ‘Master of Illusion’ to know what these guys are about.

Rating: 8 / 10 - Reflections of Darkness
