"Yahoo Music My Interview with Kill Moon"

Kill Moon is a post-punk, grunge band from the UK. Here we discuss the band's name, their songwriting process, their experiences performing live, and the future of the band.

Who is Kill Moon? How did the band form?

Izzy Bee Phillips - Rhythm Guitar, Vox

Chris Ostler- Lead Guitar, BVs

Tommy Taylor- Bass, BVs

Tom Dewhurst- Drums

Chris, Tom and Tommy were in WH Smith's shopping for new Biro's, and met Izzy who was browsing in the pencil case aisle. Then we started the band.

How did you come up with the band name?

We named ourselves after The Echo and The Bunnymen song "The Killing Moon."

That's a great song…Who or what are your influences and inspirations, musical or otherwise?

We like space, grunge, post-punk, reverb and are inspired by noisy pop songs.

Can you describe your songwriting process, in particular for your Jupiter EP?

It changes; usually we write the songs acoustically then develop them in the studio. With Jupiter however, we wrote a lot of the parts and textures whilst recording the EP in our home studio.

What's your favorite part of performing live? Any memorable or favorite gigs from the past?

Our favorite things about playing live are watching Izzy panic before, going mental during, and then getting wasted after. Like a musical three-course meal. Our most memorable gigs are probably supporting HAIM. Also playing on a floor in a sh*thole in Swansea and getting thrown out mid-set.

If you could time travel, what artist/band would you choose to play with or collaborate with?

The Beatles or The Wombles.

Can you describe your interest in outer space and how it's reflected within your music?

I suppose our interest in space comes from us not really knowing anything about it. We don't deliberately try to reflect this in our music, we just write what comes naturally.

What's in the future for Kill Moon? Are you working on any new material? If so, what would you describe as the theme of this new work?

We've been recording over the last couple of weeks and are going to put up our new song on 23/01/2013. We've got loads more written so hopefully we are just going to keep recording and gigging. The new stuff is a bit of a mixed bag - some of it's pretty grungy and some of it's quite low-key. We're still having fun experimenting.

"Killing Moon Blog TRACK OF THE DAY: KILL MOON "SHINE""

That ain’t even a typo – there is in fact a (good) band called Kill Moon. In fact, there are plenty of bands that are actually called Killing Moon. They are predominantly thrash and/or metal bands from either the US or the UK. We know this because we like to google ourselves every so often to see how well we’re getting our SEO on, and can’t help but expand our search into such contexts beyond that of numerous references to the Echo & The Bunnymen classic (although that’s not actually the band we lifted the name from. We’re actually way more into Thrice…). Anyway, we can’t lay claim to this one. That bloody guy Mike at The Recommender, well, recommended them to us via the medium of a tweet. Having only just now got round to checking out Kill Moon – and rather conveniently, just in time for them to whack up new effort and current Track Of The Day Shine – we can confirm that they are not thrash and/or metal. They reckon they’re noise-pop, which we interpret to mean that they make pop music that’s a bit noisey. They are also from Brighton and there are four of them, which is a nice little set of factoids for youse lot to note down in your music-ish notepad. Given that we’ve lost ourselves in the brand new-ish clip for the track for about half an hour now, we’re gonna go ahead and say this sounds like a perfect fit alongside the guitar-psyche revival that’s got a few people’s knickers in a twist around bands like Temples – think Stone Roses doing Garbage doing Republica for a bit of insight into the indie twist that is present here. Or ignore all of that waffle we’ve just written and get down to see em when they rock the fuck out of Brighton’s Green Door Store on 29th January. Which is, like, next week. - Killing Moon

"Latest 7 New Moon"

Straight from topping 'The Sunday Times' Style hot list, LA-based band HAIM took the stage at The Haunt Brighton last week to show us what they're all about. It was a night of up-and-coming music - with local band Kill Moon having the privilege to support the 'three sisters and a mister' before they become their own headliners on a tour in 2013. Attending the packed out gig with the lovely Brianna Fryer, Kill Moon's some time stylist and art director, we pushed to the front to get right up close and personal with the band. Made up of female front (wo)man Izzy Phillips, guitarist Chris Ostler and bass player Tommy Taylor, Kill Moon list their own influences from The Beatles to Nirvana, with a love of 'dirty guitars, big drums, post-punk, grunge, the Universe and all of its many mysteries'. I'm a sucker for female fronted bands anyway, but Kill Moon are really doing it for me at the moment. With songs such as 'Jupiter' and 'Home' showcasing the band's signature filthy rock sound, with just a hint of extra-terrestrial, Kill Moon are starting to make - as NME helpfully put it - 'pretty immediate waves'. If you haven't caught them at their previous sell-out shows in Brighton keep an eye out for tour dates as they embark on the live circuit in 2013. For more info visit www.killmoon.co.uk, - Latest 7

"NME RADAR"

Unlike demi-namesakes Sun Kil Moon, the Brighton trio's debut release eschews meandering introversions in favour of dusky atmospherics and one helluva soaring chorus. Having previously trailed the seaside circuit under the moniker of What's Your Vice?, their new direction is already making some pretty immediate waves. - NME

NME - 'Making some pretty immediate waves'

KILL MOON are a noise-pop band from Brighton, named after the Echo and the Bunnymen song 'The Killing Moon'. They formed after realising their shared fascination of dirty guitars, big drums, The Beatles and Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’.
After touring under a different guise for two years they locked themselves in their dingy home studio and went back to the start, emerging from the ashes as KILL MOON - influenced by post-punk, heartbreak and grunge.

They are set to embark on the live circuit in 2013, following their support of 'BBC Sound of 2013' winners HAIM.
