Kim Adams and the House Cats is a satisfying cover band whose repertoire is centered around blues, with healthy influences of jazz, swing, gospel, and soul.

This band's leanings tend to be varied and sometimes far-from-mainstream. "I'm drawn to songs that are lesser known", says the band's namesake, whose vocal stylings have been compared from Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin to Patsy Cline and Ella Fitzgerald. Although she laughingly doubts the comparisons, she declares "I'm flattered. I simply try to deliver a song with straight-ahead sincerity and passion." True enough.

Born and raised in a small town not far from Knoxville, Tennessee, Kim was weaned on country, southern gospel, and Appalachian music. "I believe my love of music comes from my Daddy, Samuel Franklin Adams. I'm still completely awestruck that he was a travelling bluegrass musician in the 1930's in the southern Smokey Mountains. He sang and played banjo, but didn't talk about that part of his life - until almost the end of his own. After serving in the war overseas, he returned home to a wife who wasn't too keen on him travelling around with his buddies. So, unfortunately, the music chapter of his life ended."

As a teenager, Kim emigrated to Montreal with her family. She has sung in several choirs, cutting her teeth with classicial music, traditional hymns, and gospel. She spent eleven years as the main soloist with a choir that performed in and around Montreal, one of those defining performances having been at the Montreal Jazz Festival. "I was lucky that my Daddy was able to attend one of my concerts before he passed away at 92. I know it tickled him to boast that my talent came from his genes! I had always adored singing, and when I sang gospel, I recognized something very familiar. It was then that I realized that gospel, blues and country were so intertwined, and so in my blood."

It was also in that choir that she met Ted Phillips, one of the House Cat musicians. Ted is an accomplished and respected pianist, composer, arranger, and former founder and director of a 20-voice vocal ensemble. The fortitude of their 18-year musical partnership is immediately apparent.

Joining them on bass is Michel Dansereau, whose notable onstage appearances include backing the strippers in the heyday of Montreal's psychedelic sixties!

On guitar is Bernard Yeo, who hails from Singapore, via London, England. His many years spent as a full-time, gigging musician lends a certain credence and experience to playing the blues.

Drummer Jeremiah Mitchell is a Concordia music graduate, who's currently pursuing a second music degree in order to establish a professional career teaching music. This is one versatile cat. Don't let Jeremiah's smooth brush work fool you; this man can let loose with raw blues just as well!

Vickie Mortensen rounds out the group with her backing vocals. A fan of folk and roots music, she lends her sweet harmonies to most of the songs in our repertoire.

These are talented musicians indeed! Kim, Ted, Michel, Bernie, Jeremiah and Vickie - but their true strength is witnessed when they appear on stage as the expressive and soulful Kim Adams and the House Cats.

True Love

Written By: P. Giraldo / N. Giraldo

Never been no fragile flower
I’ve always got too much to say
Never had much luck with love and romance
I guess it’s always been that way
But I’ve been seriously thinking
‘Bout slipping on the velvet gloves
I know it’s strange, but my luck’s about to change
‘Cause what we got here is true love, yeah

True love, you can’t buy it
You know it ain’t like nothin’ else
True love, you really oughta try it
You owe it to yourself to get ya some
True love

You know I wake up every morning
It’s the first thing on my mind
This is a permanent condition
Of the most serious kind
Now let me tell you baby
That you were sent from up above
Give me a sign, let’s not waste anymore time
‘Cause what we got here is true love

I call the man at the video store
I say cancel my membership, I won’t be needin’ it no more
Got something else to occupy my nights
And baby, it’s just the right amount of true love
True love

Eggs In One Basket

Written By: Irving Berlin

I’ve been a roaming Romeo
My Juliets have been many
But now my roaming days are gone
Too many irons in the fire
Is worse than not having any
I’ve had my share and from now on

I’m putting all my eggs in one basket
I’m betting everything I got on you
I’m giving all my love to one baby
Lord help me if my baby don’t come through

I’ve got a great big amount saved up in my love account
Honey and I decided love divided in two won’t do
So I’m putting all my eggs in one basket
I’m betting everything I got on you

I’ve been a roaming Juliette
My Romeos have been many
But now my roaming days are gone
Too many irons in the fire
Is worse than not having any
I’ve had my share and from now on

I’m putting all my eggs in one basket
I’m betting everything out on you
I’m giving all my love to one baby
Heaven help me if my baby don’t come through

My Country Man

Written By: Leroy Kirkland

Well the man I love is a country man
He’s big and strong, he's got corns on his hands
Strong as a hickory tree
He’s the right kind of man for me
Cause I need a man with a whole lotta energy

When I need him
He’s Johnny on the spot
When he hugs me
He makes my blood run hot
Ooh weee a whole lotta man I got

Every morning - he’s right behind the plow
Every evening - he stops to milk the cow
Every night - he loves me
Ooh weee, how he loves me
Cause I wanna man with a whole lotta energy

There Must Be A Better World Somewhere

Written By: Doc Pomus

Sometimes I wonder just what I’m fighting for
I win some battles, but I always lose the war
I keep right on stumbling, in this no-man’s land out here
But I know, yes I know
There must be a better world somewhere

Flying high, some joker clipped my wings
Just because he gets his kicks
Outta doing those kinda things
I keep falling into space, or just hanging in mid-air
But I know, oh yes I know
There must be a better world somewhere

Every man I want only wants himself
Everybody I love seems to love somebody else
Every man that I know has got a license to break my heart
Every love affair, is over even before it gets a chance to start

Oh if it ain’t here, maybe it’s in the hereafter
Instead of me crying tears, I’ll learn all about the laughter
But meanwhile, stuck out here, life just ain’t fair
But I know, yes I know
Oh yes I know
There must be, just got to be
There must be
There must be a better world...
Somewhere

All You Can Eat

Written By: Kane / Tempchin

Well I wanna tell you about a place
Put a smile upon your face
We open when the sun goes down
Always plenty to go around
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

Hey you went to that new place down the street
From the outside it sure smelled sweet
Somehow you didn’t get enough
Come on down to Kim’s and try my stuff
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

Come on – eat it all night long
Come on – eat it all night long
Come on – eat it all night long
Come on – eat it all night long
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

Hey you look like a hungry jack
You want something more
I can give you portions
Like you’ve never seen before
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

Well if you want that jumbo platter
If you like your servings large
Didn’t get your fill - that don’t matter
Seconds here are free of charge
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

We got mashed potatoes piled high
Apple dumplings and cherry pie
And if you’re going way down south
Our barbeque will melt in your mouth
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

I got watermelons with such a taste
They’ll make the juice run down your face
And if you’ve got some room for later
Well try my pie - it’s sweet potato
All you can eat and you can eat it all night long

Tell Mama

Written By: Carter / Daniel / Terrell

You thought you’d finally found a good girl
One to love you and give you the world
Now you found that you’ve been misused
Talk to me, I’ll do what you choose
I want you to

Tell Mama – all about it
Tell Mama – what you need
Tell Mama – what you want
And I’ll make everything alright

That girl you had didn’t have no sense
She wasn’t worth all the time that you spent
She had other men throw you outdoors
Now the same men are wearing your clothes
I want you to

Tell Mama – all about it
Tell Mama – what you need
Tell Mama – what you want
And I’ll make everything alright

She would embarrass you anywhere
She let everybody know she didn’t care
Give me a chance I’ve been begging you
I just wanna take care of you
I want you to

Tell Mama – all about it
Tell Mama – what you need
Tell Mama – what you want
Tell Mama – what you need, what you want
And I’ll make everything all right

You Don't Know Me

Written By: Ray Charles

You give your hand to me then you say hello
I can hardly speak my heart is beating so
And anyone can tell you think you know me well
But you don’t know me

No you don’t know the one who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips and longs to hold you tight
Oh I’m just a friend, that’s all I’ve ever been
Cause you don’t know me

I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy I’ve let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too

You give your hand to me and then you say goodbye
I watch you walk away beside the lucky guy
You’ll never, never know the one who loves you so, well…
You don’t know me

Stormy Monday

Written By: T-Bone Walker

They call it Stormy Monday
But Tuesday’s just as bad
They call it stormy Monday
But Tuesday’s just as bad
Wednesday’s worse
And Thursday’s also sad

The eagle flies on Friday
And Saturday I go out to play
Yeah, the eagle flies on Friday
And Saturday I go out to play
Sunday I go to church
And I kneel down and pray

Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy on me
You know I cry Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy on me
You know I’m trying, yeah trying to find my baby
Won’t somebody please send him home to me

Love Me

Written By: J. Leiber / M. Stoller

Treat me like a fool
Treat me mean and cruel
But love me
Break my faithful heart
Tear it all apart
But love me

If you ever go
Darling, I’ll be oh so lonely
I’ll be sad and blue
Crying over you, dear only

I would beg and steal
Oh just to feel your heart
Beatin’ so close to mine

Well, if you ever go
Darling, I’ll be oh so lonely
I’ll be sad and blue
Crying over you, dear only
