Biography

Kim Baker makes her musicianship and songwriting accessible to the masses with her melodic and acoustic guitar-rooted songs. Her voice and songwriting style have been compared to such greats as Chrissie Hynde (of the Pretenders) and Melissa Etheridge. "Rising Tide," Baker's latest release on Earthwater Records was recorded with seven-time Grammy nominated producer Cookie Marenco at the helm, and features the seamless blending of an eclectic array of songs best described as "thoughtful acoustic rock." The sound is a combination of honest and insightful lyrics delivered in a driving, folk-rock package. The album also features stellar performances by Kenny Aronoff (Melissa Etheridge, John Mellencamp) on drums, Myron Dove (Santana) on bass and Stef Burns (Huey Lewis and the News) on lead guitar. Baker planned two national tours in support of "Rising Tide," and has performed at premier venues throughout the Bay Area, including the Great American Music Hall, The Little Fox Theater and San Francisco's historic Fillmore Auditorium. Baker has been written up in numerous publications, including the Chicago Tribune, Mediaweek Magazine and the LA Times.

Baker grew up in southern California and took interest in music at an early age. She learned to play the piano at age 8 and began playing guitar and writing songs in high school. By age 15, she had committed herself seriously to a future in music, and at age 18 departed for Mills College in Oakland, CA where she earned a degree in music. Within a year of her graduation, and after finishing an internship at Polygram Group Distribution, Baker founded Earthwater Records, and began to perform music professionally. Sean Lineweaver of WHFC Baltimore radio has been spinning Baker's music since 1998 and considers Baker well on her way to national recognition. He raves, "Kim Baker is one of Crossroads favorite new talents. Songs like 'Promised Land' and 'Encircled by Angels' are just proof of her outstanding talent as a songwriter."

Lyrics

Winship Hall

Written By: Kim Baker

Candlelight smoke, fills the third floor room
Sit in the windowsill, look out at the moon
Your memory fills my blood. Its heat warms my veins
Those memories etched, in the window panes

In the midnight air, running through the fields
The death of our past, the birth of our shields
How did this, miracle occur
Bound tightly together, our futures unsure

So dance with me my friend
Walk with me til the end
Hold tightly to my hand
The answers lie beyond this flatland
Your arm around me my friend
How I wish I could be, back there again

Well the light has faded and the rooms sit empty
You can almost hear the music at half past ten
The wind is blowing, through winship hall
Echoes of women whose laughter said it all

So dance with me my friend
Walk with me til the end
Hold tightly to my hand
The answers lie beyond this flatland
Your arm around me my friend
How I wish I could be back there again

Darkness Falls

Written By: Kim Baker

Walking down these streets, looking for you
You are walking along beside me, your hands by your side
And we hide our precious stones, in the middle of the night
And I'm seeing it on me, but it's hidden from my sight

Don't you see, the night's on fire, in the middle of this street
While the people lie asleep
Couldn't you, see you reflection in the dark complexion of the moon

Well tell me, does this vision speak to you
Somewhere in the tree, you'll find the hidden truth
And ten years later, when they all come out to judge you
You'll know that you drank, from the well of the truth

Don't you see, the night's on fire, in the middle of this street
While the people lie asleep
Couldn't you, see you reflection in the dark complexion of the moon
Walking down this alley through the fire and flames
I realized the deer and I are one and the same
You try to pull me close into your arms
But I'll fight it until
The darkness falls

Before

Written By: Kim Baker

I wonder... could you be the one
The ray of sun
That I've been waiting for
All of my life

Because I haven't been the same
Since the moment I said your name
Since the moment I saw your face
Yours was a smile beyond replace

Chorus:
Tell me, can you erase?
All of this pain, all of this rain
That has come before, falling like a fierce downpour
I've never needed anything more
Than to be loved... like I've never been loved, before

Break open the door
That leads inside my heart
I'll give you the key, willingly
If you'd just lean in, and be willing to start

For now you are off my chart
And I am lost inside this heart
Please don't leave me hanging...

Chorus:
Just tell me, can you erase?
All of this pain, all of this rain
That has come before, falling like a fierce downpour
I've never needed anything more
Than to be loved... like I've never been loved, before

(instrumental)

Chorus:
Just tell me, can you erase?
All of this pain, all of this rain
That has come before, falling like a fierce downpour
I've never needed anything more
Than to be loved... like I've never been loved, before
Like I've never been loved before

I wonder... could you be the one
The ray of sun
That I've been waiting for
All of my life
