"Original Song Helps Indy Woman Win Colgate Showdown"

An original song that brought the singer and several in the audience to tears apparently wowed the judges too at the Colgate Country Music Showdown. Kimberly Lowe, a 38 year old mom from Indianapolis, won the WRBI True Ford Mercury country music singing contest Friday at the Batesville Music and Arts Festival in the park. She sang Big Deal but then took to the keyboards and explained the next song was an original, written about three people close to her who had died. She said afterwards that it was not the first time she had performed it in public, but it affects her every time she sings it.
She also was thrilled to have won, and wiped a tear of joy on stage. Her husband was there to help her celebrate. They were celebrating their anniversary the next day. "It's a good weekend," she exclaimed.
2nd place went to a poised 14 year old from Steubenville, Ohio, Catherine Losey, the last contestant, who sang a country/blues rendition of Black Velvet and I Want to be a Cowboy Sweetheart where she yodeled.
The audience was impressed with the poise and stage presence, particularly of the young contestants, another one being just 16.
Four of the contestants were from the Batesville area and brought their fans and relatives. The winner advances to the state competition in Indianapolis. Lowe has competed in other Colgate contests, but said she wants to go all the way with this win! After the state competition, they compete regionally, and then on to the finals with the chance to win $100,000.

“I grew up listening to Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and one of my dads favorites, The Statler Brothers to name a few. One of my sources of inspiration today is Martina McBride. I feel her music impacts others in a positive way. When I hear one of her songs, it draws me in and holds my attention until she sings her very last note. This is what I strive for when performing. One of my main goals is to perform where so many wonderful and talented artists have, at the Grand Old Opry. Yes, I am still waiting for that “Big Break” like so many of us dream for but I know God has given me a special gift, and I intend to keep singing, playing and performing to see what he has in store for me next.”
