North Carolina-based musician Kim Kalman has released her debut Christian CD, I’m Not Alone. Kalman combines inspiring lyrics with uplifting melodies, in a fresh, soulful sound that represents the best of contemporary Christian music.
“My selection of material, Christian or not, has to be something I believe in,” Kalman says. “I see my music as an extension of my heart and soul. It gives me permission to feel, and share those feelings. Writers write memoirs, I record CDs.”
Kim opens her soul to share her spiritual journey in the most honest manner, talking directly about universal human emotions. “I have to be connected to the story, otherwise my listeners won’t be,” she says.
Often told she has the voice of an angel, Kalman comments, “I feel strongly that I have been given a gift and I’m on the right path.”
Kalman first experienced her gift of connecting with people through music when, at the age of 14, she was asked to direct her church choir. And again as a senior in high school, when she was invited to tour with the internationally renowned performing company, Up With People. Through these experiences, Kim’s passion for music was reinforced. After recording 4 CDs in Nashville, she has come full circle… back to her spiritual roots, to record I’m Not Alone.
Inspired while cantoring last year, Kim realized that she needed to go beyond the limits of ministering at mass. The message she received was “Move on!” With I’m Not Alone, Kalman steps outside the box allowing her vision to come to life.
“My musicians gave me goose bumps when they embraced the vision and translated it into music,” Kalman says. “Over lunch in the studio, there was a sharing of personal journeys with my backup singers on how God has graced our lives. The studio was filled with little miracles on a daily basis, while I was engulfed in spirit-filled song for two weeks on my own mini retreat.”
“I would like listeners to feel the music with the hope that it will be something they can take with them on the next step of their journey,” she says. “That’s why I sing!”
