I'm 16 - yes I know it's young but the band on before me at my last gig at Perfect 5th had a 13 year old guitarist! - and all in all, I'm just a girl with a passion for music. I've been writing songs since the age of 7 (though the ones from back then usually involved Johnny Bravo and various other characters from Cartoon Network), and wrote my first "proper" song at the age of 11. I remember; I was walking through the mountains in Tenerife. Since then they've been shooting out!
I blame my obsession for music on my two older sisters; one, Jenny, has been in the industry for years (working for Scuzz TV, Flaunt, Victory Records and now Fearless Records LA), and the other, H, is a jazz singer in Tenerife. She also lets her creativity out through writing music. Jen has always thrown CDs at me, and so my iTunes collection and musical influences have been growing and growing.
My music is mainly acoustic guitar and voice, but has recently been produced with dance and electro influences. My original influences were artists such as Eddi Reader, Joni Mitchell, Jenny Lewis and Jack's Mannequin. However, more recently they have changed to the likes of The Postal Service, Delphic, and Temper Trap. I take inspiration from the people and places around me. There was a stage last year when I had the most horrible acne, and due to severe lack of confidence and self-esteem, found myself visiting the doctors with slight depression. Since then, the skin has cleared up (thank heavens!), and I've grown a lot stronger. Without sounding cheesy, that emotional experience has been one of my biggest inspirations.
It's been said that "you can hear the smile in [my] voice" (Sarah Cunningham, venue owner), and that I "have a lot of confidence on stage" (Live N Up organisers). The thing that makes me stand out is most likely my simple love for the music and songs that I write, and my slightly, err, unique fashion sense! I've had a lot of performance experience, touring with Sophie Mendoza & The Resolution (sax and BVs), and have a very diverse taste in music. But however much I love talking about myself, I'd rather have you find this stuff out for yourselves! *hint hint* :)
