"Gig Review: King Beez"

May 19, 2012- Ever since Matt Groopie and the Bandits were featured in an Emerging Artist Spotlight as part of our Canadian Music Week coverage in March, we’ve been trying to get a chance to see Groopie live. We were covering the Indie Awards at the Royal York Hotel while Matt Groopie and the Bandits were playing at the Underground Garage. Since then whenever he was playing we had other commitments. On May 19th I caught up with Matt at The Sister at 1554 Queen West. However this time it wasn’t Matt Groopie and the Bandits, it was the King Beez, Groopie’s surf band. Playing primarily original instrumental surf songs, the band played a high energy set that sounded like a soundtrack to a Tarantino movie. This is a sound from the early 60's that was hugely influential to everything that followed, including Jimmy Page as seen in “It Might Get Loud”.

"Halloween Treat from King Beez"

Move over Monster Mash, Thornhill’s Matt Groopie and his King Beez have your new soundtrack for the Halloween season.

Deathproof Vol. 1 is bone-shaking, instrumental garage-surf rock with a healthy dose of B-horror movie camp.

Some of the song titles alone, such as Spider Woman and We Like Brains, are enough to give you the heebie-jeebies.

The six-track EP is available on iTunes beginning today, which is, coincidentally, when the Deathproof Road Show kicks off at Coconuts Restaurant & Lounge in Thornhill (2180 Steeles Ave. W., units 14 & 15).

You can also catch King Beez at the Lion & Firkin in Newmarket (1091 Gorham St.), as well as at Toronto’s Silver Dollar Room (480 Spadina Ave.) where the band will put on a special devil’s night concert before making its way east to Montreal.

Hit up www.MattGroopie.com for full tour dates and more — if you dare.
