"The King Casey Band hit 'The Road'"

I had the pleasure of catching the King Casey Band out at Penny Road Pub on April 11th. I had no pre-conceived notions of what kind of music I was to hear and was pleasantly surprised at this hard rockin’ band!

That said, they are an original band but had a few covers thrown in: Jimi Hendrix, “Hey Joe”, Van Halen “Ain’t Talkin’ About Love” and the Kinks “You Really Got Me”. I love to hear bands that do original material – after all, without these music writers where would “cover” bands be? They performed mostly songs from their debut CD “Fallen Empire”, which was just released worldwide on all the downloadable music sites [Napster, iTunes, etc.] as of this writing.

All songs on the CD were written and performed solely by the multi-talented and charismatic frontman and guitar player, Casey Lankin. His current line-up of very talented musicians includes lead guitar, Naski Corelo; on bass, Darren Jackson; keys, Fernando Hernandez; sax player, Brian Hilton; and drummer, Nate Lanken. On the original “Badge of Honor”, I was extremely impressed by the slayer chords of bass player, Darren Jackson, who consistently impressed with “Stanley Clarke” like riffs goin’ on. Another of my favorite originals was the hard-rockin’ “Too Far”. Lead guitar player, Naski Corelo, did an outstanding performance throughout the show and did a most impressive cover of “Hey Joe”. Although the CD did not include sax, Brian Hilton, as well as keyboard player, Fernando Hernandez, added new layers to the songs, which added a fullness to the sound. Drummer, Big Nate, provided the hard-hitting backbone of the band.

Casey’s music seems to be influenced by such artists as Pink Floyd and Nirvana as heard in their somewhat trippy, melodic storylines. The entire band were obviously very accomplished musicians who truly love what they are doing, which was a joy for me to watch and listen to. Casey is quite a remarkable storyteller.

Casey also tells me that he is also working on a new CD called “Building a Dream”…can’t wait to listen to that one! If you like original alternative/rock, you really should check out this band!

ROCK ON~ Musically, King Casey has a very tight focus, and while the agents have "sold" them as an original act with a sound akin to Incubus crossed with a deep Pink Floyd influence. While you'll hear these influences, King Casey's music also makes you think a little bit of Metallica, Queensryche, Godsmack, Nirvana, Rammstein, and Creed in terms of instrumental execution. Casey's voice reminds me a little of Ty Tabor from King's X, though there are distinct differences.
