"Hip Hopper is King: With win at South Shore Plaza, 18 year old now in finals of talent contest"

BRAINTREE- When Richard Jean-Baptiste grabs a microphone and spits verse, you can't help but nod your head. And, for him, that's exactly the point. "I want people to move" Jean-Baptiste, 18, of Mattapan said. "I don't like to make sad music or "cry" music. I like to make dance music- jump-out-of-your-body music. Jean-Baptiste, a rising hip hop artist known as King Spyda, was one of about 30 local teens who took stage last night in the preliminaries of the third annual Simon DTour Live Talent competition at South Shore Plaza. Their music was piped through two 300-watt speakers, giving mall goers a reason to set down their shopping bags and listen.

Jean-Baptiste took home the night's top prize: a spot in the finals. He is one step clors to his dream of Hollywood superstardom. - The Patriot Ledger, 8-5-2005
