"Kinlay Band - Whose The Clown - Oct 2008"

"Anyone who's seen Kinlay, a.k.a. Manchester native Andy MacKinlay, at one of his many gigs around town knows the man can jam covers with the best of 'em. So what's his original material like? Whose The Clown? turns out to be a tight collection of funk-rock spiced with reggae, rap and ballads and liberally juiced with wry reflections on expat life..." - Metropolis

Bio

The band began in 2004 when MacKinlay hosted weekly Jam sessions around central Tokyo. He pulled in Murakami and Ishii to act as house band and began playing MacKinlay's original songs to warm up. Playing Rock covers & Funk classics of a weekend at the local bars around Shibuya & Roppongi, they caught the ear of Japanese producer Dyce Ozawa (J?STILLTON) (Joint One) who brought Osaka J-Host band "ACQUA" to the top of the Japan Oricon single and album charts back in 2006.

After pulling in In local-scene veteran Fukuda on Keyboards, STILLTON produced their first 8-track mini-album "Whose The Clown ?"* released in July 2008.

In 2009, Kinlay Band continued to build their sounds with elements of afrobeat and electronica playing bigger venues like Seco Bar (Shibuya) and A971 & Super Deluxe (Roppongi) whilst digging into the Tokyo live house scene. They also built their own quarterly event "Kickstart Your Heart" at Club Edge (Roppongi) and supported Australian Bands Hoodoo Gurus and Regurgitator on their 2009 Japan Tours.

Their second 8-track effort "Triple *R*" was completed in May 2010. Produced, Mixed & Mastered again by STILLTON it includes contributions from other local artists Pinky Piglets, Andy Matsukami (Swallowtail Butterfly) and others.

KINLAY Band continues to promote with events throughout Tokyo and in addition hosts the monthly event "Tokyo Jam Session" for musicians and vocalists at What The Dickens in Ebisu on the first Tuesday of every month (since 2004).
