Kira Willey is "Suzanne Vega for kids - tossing in elements of doowop, jazz and African tribal music." Her CD, Dance for the Sun, is an album of unique and upbeat children's yoga songs. A new CD is in the works!

Biography

Kira Willey grew up in New England playing classical violin and singing with her musical family. While living in New York City, she taught music to young children and realized that her students had the most fun when they were up and moving—wiggling, stretching, dancing. Having practiced yoga for years, she had the idea to combine music and yoga as a way to fully engage kids, giving them the mind/body benefits of yoga plus the joy of hearing many styles of music. She founded Fireflies Musical Yoga for Kids in 2006.
When she began teaching kids’ yoga, she brought along her guitar and a few tunes she had written. Instant hit: the kids loved it when Kira sang and played, and they always asked for more music. They learned the songs very quickly, sang along, and easily remembered the poses that went with them.
Kira began writing more and more songs to use in class, which eventually inspired her to record Dance for the Sun: Yoga Songs for Kids, released in early 2007. Thanks to positive word-of-mouth, some great reviews, a handful of awards, and (last but not least) an out-of-the-blue request from Dell Computer to use her song “Colors” in a worldwide ad campaign in 2008, Kira’s music has found a large, diverse and devoted following. Eighteen-year-olds on Facebook, parents of developmentally disabled kids, and at least one monk in Dublin… they, and many others, have been inspired and moved by her songs. Kira has expanded her songwriting beyond the children's yoga genre to family music, and will have new releases in the Spring of 2010!

let's go to work

Written By: Kira Willey

I'd like to go to work with you today
I'd like to try a ride on the train
I'd like to see what kind of things you do
so please mom let me come too

I'd like to go to work with you today
I'd like to try a ride on the train
I think it's time I make my corporate debut
so please dad let me come too

let’s go to work
we can’t be late
now is not the time to play
let’s go to work
we can’t be late
I'm big enough no matter what you say

I'd like to go to work with you today
I'd like to wear a suit start my resume
I think I'd do quite well in an interview
so please mom let me come too

let’s go to work
we can’t be late
now is not the time to play
let’s go to work
we can’t be late
I'm big enough no matter what you say

I'd like to go to work with you today
I'd like to make some calls try to earn some pay
I think that I could help in your review
so please dad let me come too

let’s go to work
we can’t be late
now is not the time to play
let’s go to work
we can’t be late
I'm big enough no matter what you say

caterpillar caterpillar

Written By: Kira Willey

tickle tickle on my arm....

caterpillar caterpillar
how do you do
so happy that my little arm
is on your way through

caterpillar caterpillar
where do you go
and how you gonna get there
when you take it so slow

caterpillar caterpillar
what do you say
you wiggle wiggle on my arm
in such a fuzzy way

caterpillar caterpillar
I 've got to know
does your mommy let you polish
all your teeny tiny toes

caterpillar caterpillar
why do you roam
I wish you luck as you inch
along on home

colors

Written By: Kira Willey

I am green today
I chirp with joy like a cricket song
I am gray today
gloomy and damp like a morning fog
I am orange today
loud and messy like finger paint on the wall

I am red today
hopping mad like a playground ball
I am black today
strong and tall a great big bear
I am purple today
bright and happy like a butterfly in the air

chorus
I'm a rainbow today
all the colors of the world
I'm a rainbow today
all the colors of the world
I'm a rainbow today
all the colors of the world are in me

I am yellow today
I shine my light out like the sun
I am white today
soft and quiet like new snow
I am blue today
calm as glass and cool like the sea

chorus

surfer mama

Written By: Kira Willey

she runs to the beach
throws her diaper bag down
puts a toe in the water
she hopes maybe the beds will make themselves today
she's gone surfing
my surfer mama

it's been a while since the tub was cleaned
so what's another day
nothing will stop her
once her feet hit the sand
she's gone surfing
my surfer mama

mama's gone surfing
mama's gone surfing
mama's gone surfing
my surfer mama
(repeat)

(she) hops on her board
paddles out from the shore
into the salty spray
a smile on her face and the juice stains washing away
she's gone surfing
my surfer mama

daddy's gonna have to put us down for our naps
dad will make us a snack
'cause mama is way out hangin' ten on the waves
she's gone surfing
my surfer mama

mama's gone surfing
mama's gone surfing
mama's gone surfing
my surfer mama
(repeat)

now the shadows are long
she'll be coming back soon
we don't worry a bit
she loves nothing better than coming on home
she's gone surfing
my surfer mama

mama's gone surfing
mama's gone surfing
mama's gone surfing
my surfer mama

black dog in the river

Written By: Kira Willey

black dog in the river
black dog in the river
there's a black dog in the river
swimming to her heart's delight

throw sticks in the river
throw sticks in the river
we throw sticks in the river
throw 'em to our heart's delight

fish rise in the river
fish rise in the river
see the fish rise in the river
risin' to their hearts’ delight

frog jumps in the river
frog jumps in the river
frog jumps in the river
jumpin' to his heart's delight

swan glides in the river
swan glides in the river
swan glides in the river
glidin' to her heart's delight

shake shake in the river
shake black dog in the river now
shake shake in the river
shakin' to her heart's delight

black dog in the river
black dog in the river
there's a black dog in the river
swimming to her heart's delight

Winter's Coming

Written By: Kira Willey

Winter’s coming on its tiptoes
creeping in to lie with me

I pull the blankets round my body
Tuck them in beneath my feet

Wind is breathing through the wood
Flakes are flying soft and white

They rest like frosting on the hills
The trees are dressed in suits of ice

I raise my voice to
cold and gray skies

Spring will bloom
where now deep snow lies

dancing with my daddy

Written By: Kira Willey

I call my daddy on the phone
so I can tell him hurry home to me
he’s going to be here soon I know
and I'll be dancing with my daddy

I get my favorite jammies on
the ones with all the happy frogs on them
I wait until I hear his key
then I’ll be dancing with my daddy

CHORUS
dancing with my daddy
is the best part of my day
dancing with my daddy
cause my daddy's home to stay

we put our music on to play
my daddy looks a little tired I’d say
but then we twirl and spin and sway
oh yes I'm dancing with my daddy

CHORUS
dancing with my daddy
is the best part of my day
dancing with my daddy
cause my daddy's home to stay

(instrumental)

CHORUS
dancing with my daddy
is the best part of my day
dancing with my daddy
cause my daddy's home to stay

and in the morning over toast
he says the thing to do he loves the most
is when he gets to come see me
it’s when I’m dancing with my daddy

CHORUS
dancing with my daddy
is the best part of my day
dancing with my daddy
cause my daddy's home to stay
