The standout track on Dahlia for me is the album closer “How Much,” which borders on post-rock. After a short verse where Wells admires someone’s strength in spite of hardships, it goes into a majestically triumphant cacophony of electronic sounds, minimalist trumpet, delay-drenched guitar lines and a fast ride cymbal. Christina Wells recites the poem “Scraggy Trees” over this instrumental section which ends the album on a powerful note.

In a CBC interview, Wells said “Dahlia is a late-blooming flower, it’s never too late to chase your dream.” Not only is the dahlia an analogy for Wells’ musical journey, but he’s also crafted an album that is just as beautiful and lush as its namesake.

I can only hope it doesn’t take another thirty-eight years for Wells to release a follow-up to Dahlia. - The East Magazine

"Kirk Wells blooms with his album, Dahlia"

Kirk Wells has been writing songs since he was a teenager, but it's taken him about two decades to take the plunge and make his debut solo album.

The album, Dahlia, is a collection of atmospheric and introspective songs. - CBC NL First Listen

Dahlia - 2020

have been creating music for over 20 years, writing and recording hundreds of songs mostly
on a digital 8-track that I bought in 2003. I’ve kept things pretty close to the chest
for most of my life up until now, but after a lot of encouragement from friends and family, and from strangers too, I finally decided to record an actual studio album. The outcome of the process was my debut album Dahlia, for which I received a MusicNL nomination for Alternative artist of the year, and I am very proud of it. Currently I am practicing the songs on that album with a band, but for the time being any performance I give will be solo.

The whole process has been a life changing journey for me, and I have been learning that I am capable of a lot more than I thought if I just stay open. At this point I am just along for the ride, and am eager to see what else I can accomplsh with my music.
