Sixties music for a new millenium

Biography

Kito Peters makes pop/folk/jazz/rock/roots music that feels good while exploring big questions. In a sense his work can be described as Sixties songs for a new millenium. All of Kito's albums find hope and heartache in the uproar outside Eden.

Kito's 6th CD - Stories - was released in August 2007. It has received widespread radio airplay and was named Best Pop CD at the 2008 New Mexico Music Awards.

Kito's last three CDs - Stories (2007), Undertow (2007), and The Other Side (2005) - were all New Mexico Music Awards finalists for Best CD of the Year. His tune Empty was chosen Best Jazz Song at the 2007 NMMA, while Good Day to Die was selected NMMA Best World Beat Song in 2006.

Self Q&A

1) Whats your background?

I grew up in New York City, the eldest of four brothers. Parental divorce when I was eleven turned everything upside down. Still soldiered on through high school as a would-be hero who planned to become president one day. Then off to college in 1968.

Revolution on campus. Revolution in my psyche. All my ideas about the world and my place in it exploded. Blasted inwards to try to reconstitute myself . Years in the wilderness.

Id fallen in love in high school with a songwriter. Who knew actual humans could write songs? I bought a guitar age 19. Didnt write my first tune til I was 25. Then wrote a lot of them for several years. And stopped.

Influenced by a seminal guru-type figure in the early 80s to go to grad school in clinical psychology. Earned a PhD and became a therapist, teacher, group leader.

Started writing songs again in a big way in the late 90s. Was asking this question: what would you be bartering for more time to do if this were your last day on earth. Surprised by the answer - make more music. Moved to New Mexico in 1998 when my daughter left for college. Was drawn to the sky and mountains and expanse. Started recording soon thereafter....

Prairie Girl

Written By: Kito Peters

PRAIRIE GIRL

my daddy is the pastor
in a prairie town
he says don’t do it honey
you’ll go down

we’re god-fearing
i could use more love
too many rules
from the men above

i took my dog
we walked all day
trying to get closer
or further away

before my cousin
got shot in iraq
he wrote me a letter
said i won’t be back

he said folks
didn’t want him there
since he was a savior
it didn’t seem fair

i took my dog
we walked all day
trying to get closer
or further away

i want to know
where the buffalo roam
we smell the cows
on their feedlot home

i’ll hit the city
soon as i can
get a tattoo
and strut like a man

i took my dog
we walked all day
trying to get closer
or further away

Empty

Written By: Kito Peters

i¹m empty like the desert
in a squall of sand
drift up a river
where¹s the promised land

vacant in the sunlight
with eyes half-mast
hose down the present
while the leaves float past

i hid here when you looked for me
always hoped i¹d make you see

i¹m empty like a crater
on the moon¹s dark side
trade wind mocks
the words i tried

vacant like a crevice
where the womb began
empty in fullness
i¹m your pregnant man

i hid here when you looked for me
always hoped i¹d make you see

i¹m empty in the quiet
of the final time
curled under cover
while the cracked bells chime

i¹ll be here when you look for me
always hoped i¹d make you see

Four Way Stop

Written By: Kito Peters

FOUR WAY STOP

i drove hard down the cold blacktop
had to meet a man at the four way stop
a desperate rendezvous

no one can tell you which way to go
black ice lurks under virgin snow
meet me at the four way stop

devil on my left angel on my right
mystery straight ahead in the pale moonlight
waiting at the four way stop

i heard him yell as i hit the brake
he swerved up to me like a last mistake
my destined rendezvous

he flashed a gun and a savage grin
son you don't know what kind of hell you're in
gotcha at the four way stop

chorus

i spun quick grabbed for the gun
a shot rang out the deed was done
a final rendezvous

now i don't know if it was him or me
but something tortured got set free
grappling at the four way stop

devil on my left angel on my right
mystery straight ahead in the pale moonlight
devil on my left angel on my right
mystery straight ahead in the pale moonlight
waiting at the four way stop
