"Clutch Magazine - KJ Rose: A Real Return To Music"

Passion. You hear the word used a lot by artists, in particular musical artists. Hell it’s damned near a prerequisite to do anything deemed creative. But passion only goes so far, there needs to be drive, perseverance and sometimes the luck of being at the right place at the right time. That’s how it started for new R&B/Soul artist KJ Rose.

After graduating college as a business administration major, the singer/songwriter worked for five years pharmaceutical company Pfizer in the corporate compensation department. A far cry from any musical aspiration, but she had a game plan, “…being there I was able to channel some other music opportunities because I had a steady paycheck coming in.”

Rose went to open mics where she performed alongside big name talent including Carl Thomas and Faith Evans. Her opportunity came from the Overweight Lover himself Heavy D with a spot as a background singer.

“I just came through by being available at the time and economical. I don’t think they knew they were looking for me. I knew they were looking for me, but I don’t think they knew.”

From there she got her first touring experience with Kelly Price where after one conversation she was asked to tour with P. Diddy. After getting her feet wet being in the background Rose, was ready to claim the limelight for herself. “I think it was them believing in me and me also witnessing at someone else’s expense the business and the work that really goes into it. It kind of shaped my desire to really be in it. I think after doing all these background gigs I was like, ‘Okay, at some point I don’t want to keep chasing the next gig.’ Because you realize as much prestige is there, you’re still hired help. So when their albums don’t take off, we don’t go on the road. I didn’t want my career to be predicated on somebody else’s career.”

Which brings us to now. As a totally independent artist, KJ has a loyal three-man crew and cheering section made of friends and family. Together, they pound the pavement and get the word out about this incredibly driven chanteuse. And while the majors have come knocking, she doesn’t take it personally if nothing pans out. “I’ve had a few meetings and it used to be so discouraging because I didn’t get the response that I was looking for, but now it’s such a better feeling when I can walk out and say this meeting isn’t going to stop me because I’ve already chosen to succeed.”

One success is the release of “A Better Way” the first single from her debut album “All Heart, No Regrets.” A heartfelt ballad that’s sung with throaty, soulful passion, it more than your average love and relationships song, for Rose, “A Better Place comes from a place of healing. “It was just on my heart and I felt like in order for me to make room emotionally I had to get that out. So I can tell when it’s GOD working because the song didn’t take that long to come together. This song was probably written in like a half hour because it was so real. It went from my heart to the paper to the studio. There was no embellishing, it was what it was and I accepted that.”

With “All Heart, No Regrets” set to drop in October be prepared for a return to good music. Music that’s not heavy on the riffing or synthesized sound. Listen for tunes that are all about the melody and conveying a message. Be prepared for a return to real music.

"Soul Train's Soul-o-Meter"

To characterize Chi-town chanteuse KJ Rose’s debut album, All Heart, No Regrets as an R&B album would be shortsighted. There are some core R&B elements, but there’s a distinct Motown influence, a hint of Disco and not to mention an appreciation for Hip Hop.

"Soultrain.com"

The cadence of her speech, the inflections of her voice and introspective pauses with which she laces her stories illustrate that she is a person full of passion. And it’s with this passion that she managed to walk the fine line of opportunity and hard work in being an independent artist.

"Monique Show Press Release"

SINGER KJ ROSE MAKES NATIONAL TELEVISION SOLOIST DEBUT AS THE FIRST LAUNCH PAD ARTIST ON BET’S NEW LATE NIGHT FARE “THE MO’NIQUE SHOW”

The emotionally-moved hostess Mo’Nique calls “A Better Way” a song that will change lives.
(LOS ANGELES) October 6, 2009. Singer KJ Rose makes her national television soloist debut as the first Launch Pad Artist on BET’s new late night fare – “The Mo’Nique Show” at 11 p.m. (10 p.m. Central), Thursday, October 8th on BET.
The emotionally-charged performance continued long after the cameras stopped rolling with Mo’Nique -- visually moved by the lyrics and feeling KJ Rose exhibited during the performance of her self-penned “A Better Way” – claiming it’s a “song that will change lives.”
“My experience with Mo’nique was career-defining. She gave me such a warm reception. She was very sincere and genuine,” said KJ Rose. “I really feel that she was a champion of me and my music. She made me feel like family.”
The new hour-long show hosted by the award-winning comedienne and actress is described as a late night VIP Party. Mo’Nique is also currently riding the buzz of possible Oscar contention for her recent role in the highly-anticipated film, “Precious.”
Buzz is something both Mo’Nique and KJ Rose share at this time and the road to this point for Ms. Rose hasn’t been hasty, but well-fulfilled nonetheless.

Bio

KJ Rose…vocalist, songwriter, and performer is set to embark on a music career that will one day allow her to transcend genres, audiences, and time. Her tenacity and fervent love for music afforded her the opportunity to lend vocals to artists that include P. Diddy, KRS1, R. Kelly, Mario, Carl Thomas, Monica, Common, Dead Prez and a host of others. This Chicago native is now ready to step into the spotlight and claim her very own piece of heaven.

While growing up on the south side of Chicago, KJ Rose honed her talents at an early age while singing with The Soul Children of Chicago gospel choir as well as The Trinity United Church of Christ young adult choir. She was influenced by the voices of formidable talents that include Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan and Phyllis Hyman.

Upon graduating from Florida A&M University, KJ Rose’s enthusiasm for music landed her in New York City. She spent several years cultivating her craft but it wasn’t long before she found herself gracing the platinum-selling albums of Heavy D (Big Daddy), Notorious B.I.G. (Playa Hata), and Mase (Why You Wanna Hurt Me). Subsequently, KJ Rose had a chance encounter with Kelly Price who offered the opportunity to tour with P. Diddy & The Family, which was further confirmation that her dreams were attainable! This experience set the stage for her to soar to new heights landing appearances in movies (Trois), commercials (Verizon), and television (Grammy Awards). Her audacious efforts would later find her touring with major recording artists Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears.

As KJ Rose worked on her music career, she unexpectedly found herself under the tutelage of music mogul Clive Davis, to whom she attributes her business sense. While working at J Records, she became a student of the industry and began to sharpen her songwriting abilities. KJ Rose began to pen the lyrics for her album and ultimately wrote what would be her first single “A Better Way”. This song was initially written about love relationships, but once completed, she realized it spoke to humanity (those who desire to be accepted but find themselves misunderstood and underestimated). While her woman’s anthem “Trained You” reflects both an edge & sense of humor, it is the vulnerability she exudes in “Unselfish” that is sure to get her noticed. She desires to tell stories of substance, truth, and love that are both penetrable and relatable to her audience. KJ Rose is an emerging talent who will not be deterred from her purpose! Her career trajectory has afforded a wealth of experiences, enriching encounters, and an undeniable passion to capture the souls of people through her music. Her journey gave her the ammunition needed to succeed and she is now prepared to take CENTER STAGE!
