"Southern Fried California"

Southern fried California
In concert, they look like hip-hop artists, they sound like hip-hop artists, they are hip-hop artists. But in person, they’re probably as nice and normal a couple as you’ll ever find. Keyi and Silky, the husband and wife duo known as KNS Rockstar, met and married in Nashville. But Silky’s roots as well as the couple’s hip-hop careers were happening in California, so they moved west. Then, after several years in and around Los Angeles, they settled in Silky’s hometown of Oxnard. After touring with the likes of Chris Brown and Rihanna, why would they choose such a small town? “We just basically like the fields,” said Keyi. “It’s more homey and made us feel like we’re back home.”

Rappers with a message
The fact that KNS prefers living in Oxnard says a lot about the music. Despite hip-hop’s sometimes dark reputation, Keyi and Silky approach their music with a more positive attitude. Yes, they have strong roots in the church, but beyond their beliefs, they feel their mission is to create a positive vibe with their audience. “We’re not a Christian group,” Keyi explained. “We like to think of ourselves as commercial positive music.” As Silky noted, “I think people can tell by our spirit what we talk about.” But don’t mistake their music as soft. “Our beats are an uptempo makes-you-want-to-dance, feel-good kind of music,” she added. And they are busy, performing with the likes of the Lebron James’ Nike Tour and opening for people like Too Short and Jabbawockeez.

Stop the bullying
And something else they feel strongly about: bullying. It started because of what they heard and witnessed during some of their school tours. “One kid came up to us and talked about suicide,” said Keyi. “We also noticed through our Facebook feeds that the divisions in the schools were deep.” Even more disturbing, they realized that little was being done by city or school administrators to deal with the problem. “We decided to do Stop Tha Bullying because it needed to be done,” said Keyi. “No one was there for the kids.” The Stop Tha Bullying campaign has now become an urgent mission for them. They have a free concert planned for Plaza Park in Oxnard later this month. Then they’re taking their message to Canada to tour with James Cousineau from Going Viral Productions.

Dance the night away
In addition to their Canadian tour, they will be appearing this summer in Las Vegas for the Taste of Soul Festival. Then they’re headed for appearances in Nashville and New York City. Their new album, called The Other Side of the Tracks, will be released in June. KNS points to similarities between themselves and acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown and Usher. Their goal is to capture the same uniform appearance as groups like TLC. But what the two really love to do is dance. “We want to bring back that ’90s feel when everyone was dancing,” said Keyi. Silky also points out the importance of rapping about love. “As a couple,” she said, “we’re on a mission to bring the love back to the music industry. We want to show the industry that music can be done with husband and wife support.” - Ventura County Star Newspaper

"KNS ROCKSTAR Presents the “Stop Tha Bullying & Youth Violence” School Tour at the VC Alternative Education Summit"

KNS ROCKSTAR, one of the hottest R&B hip-hop duets in the game, recently participated in the Ventura County Office of Education’s Alternative Education Summit. The group’s presentation titled, “Bullying Awareness,” provided school administrators with the tools necessary to protect their students’ physical and emotional safety.

“It is important for school administration to experience a cool and innovative, yet creative way to reach their students while allowing students to be involved, engaged, and loved, all with the experience of our ‘Stop Tha Bullying & Youth Violence’ School Tour,” said KNS ROCKSTAR.

KNS ROCKSTAR’S Keyi and Silky are no strangers to the community. Their positive music and upbeat vibes leave a lasting impression on their audience. “We like to think of ourselves as commercial positive music,” said Silky. “I think people can tell by our spirit what we talk about. Our beats are an uptempo makes-you-want-to-dance, feel-good kind of music.”

The inspiration behind KNS ROCKSTAR’s passion to end school bullying derived from what they heard and witnessed during school tours. “One kid came up to us and talked about suicide,” said Keyi. “We also noticed through our Facebook feeds that the divisions in the schools were deep.”

Very little was being done by school administrators so KNS decided it was time to take charge. “We decided to do Stop Tha Bullying because it needed to be done,” said Keyi. “No one was there for the kids.”

In addition to local appearances, KNS ROCKSTAR will be headed to Nashville and New York City later this year. For more information, visit https://twitter.com/KNSROCKSTAR. - Tri-Sentry Newspaper

"Keeping It Classy/ Oxnard duo send out a positive message"

In a world where rap music often glorifies a gangsta lifestyle, the husband-and-wife musical duo K-N-S is taking its message of clean living to the streets.

Oxnard residents Keyi, 24, and Silky, 23, say they don't drink, smoke or do drugs and are adamant that their music — a blend of R&B, rap and hip-hop — reflects their positive lifestyle, a lifestyle they hope influences young people. Their goal is to become top-selling stars while maintaining a classy image.

"In this industry, you can't be afraid to be different," Silky said. "This is how artists become legends."

On Saturday, the couple will throw an invitation-only bash in Oxnard to celebrate two milestones: their one-year wedding anniversary and the release of the new K-N-S CD "Body Shots."

Keyi produced the disc, and he said the tracks blend hot, Southern-style hip-hop with West Coast cool.

"Our music fits the kids," Keyi said. "We're squeaky clean, but it's got that beat that everybody can dance to."

The duo's South-meets-West sound makes sense, as Keyi (real name Kevin E. Turner) hails from Nashville and Silky (born Shavonn Swain) is a California girl from Oxnard. The two have been together seven years and credit the longevity of their relationship to their deep religious faith, strong family ties and a mutual respect.

"It's the greatest blessing to have one another's back," Silky said. "And it's fun when you have a passion for what you do."

Silky and Keyi are a photogenic pair with a never-give-up attitude that's taking them places. The duo's video for "Wiggle" is streaming on Black Entertainment Television's Web site, and they've performed at the Roxy in West Hollywood, a club that's known more for rock 'n' roll than rap.

"We're breaking down barriers," Keyi said.

Some barriers are proving harder to break down than others. Even though there's been a longstanding public outcry for rappers to clean up their acts, it's been a tough swim against the tide for K-N-S to get major labels interested in its positive musical approach.

"It's like they (record company executives) don't know how to accept the fact that we're clean, but we're also commercial," Keyi said. "But when doors shut in our faces, we just go on and keep pushing."

Constantly brainstorming, the duo came up with the premise of creating a song about Chevrolets that wasn't driven by sexual innuendo. The result, "Ridin' in a Chevy," is a pulsing jam that celebrates the automobile brand's high-performance capabilities. "When I do doughnuts, baby, it looks like a puzzle," Keyi raps. "There's nothing like that American muscle."

The song turned out to be the perfect advertising vehicle for Oxnard's Todey Chevrolet dealership, which used the track in radio ads this year.

Keyi and Silky have done a lot of work at local schools, not only performing but also acting as role models.

"Not all kids are interested in athletics or after-school clubs," Silky said. "We talk to them about using their creative talents."

The couple is in the process of designing a program that will bring mentors to schools to speak on different topics, offering kids a chance to acquire the techniques to find success in their adult lives.

"When you do things by yourself, you feel so good about it," Silky said.

That's a credo that Silky and Keyi are living by. Their new "KNS ROCKSTAR" CD is being released on the duo's own label, Kong Fist Entertainment.

"Right now, independent is the way to go," Keyi said. "You can keep your creative control."

"PVMS Students Express It"

On Jan. 30, due to grant funding from the Sun Prairie Education Foundation (SPEF), the executive director and producer of the renowned TV series "Teen Talk," Keith Burkes, came to the Sun Prairie Area School District (SPASD) to talk to students at both Prairie View and Patrick Marsh Middle Schools. Burkes also spoke at an evening session that was open to the community. The grant was funded through a donation to SPEF by Findorff.

BET's Ya Heard Break Out Artists of the Year, KNS, came with Burkes to the middle school presentations.

"The group is highly entertaining with very high energy," said Rainey Briggs, physical education teacher, while introducing KNS to the students at Prairie View Middle School.

Briggs applied for the grant to bring Burkes, Briggs' own childhood mentor, to the district.

"Teen Talk" was created to give teens a chance to share their points of view and educate them in a positive way about being proactive in their own lives, Briggs said.

During his presentation at PVMS, Burkes encouraged students through rhyme and playful language, earning loud cheers, applause and laughter throughout. - Sunprairie Star Online.com
