"It Was a Fabulous and Fun Friday – S07E17"

I had a great time going to some events on December 16, 2011. To begin, I found out through Twitter that Arcade Fire released a music video to a favourite song that everyone loves from The Suburbs, it was Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains). I couldn’t stop watching and listening to the song.

The next exciting part was attending CBC All In A Day for Share Central at Ben Franklin Place. Performing there were Kool Krys and Natalia & Montuno. It was nice to see Kool Krys as I gave her the wonderful Kanpe Tea for DAVIDsTEA. In return, she gave me her second album, Listen To Your Art. - Wildworks - Lenny Wu, CKCU

"Buck 65 at Starlight (Feb 2, 2012)"

Several weeks ago I had the great pleasuring of seeing Canadian Hip Hop legend Buck 65. This was actually my first Hip Hop gig (excluding music festivals), and I had a great time... The night opened with Halifax groomed, currently Toronto based, rapper Kool Krys who managed to get the lethargic crowd warmed up and in a party mood. - Chriseclectic.com

"Kool Krys"

She's cute, charming, have a nice smile and a smooth flow. She's Canadian but can rap in polish. Been workin' with another favorite MC of mine - Ghettosocks. Her name's Kool Krys and she's one of the freshest thing to come out of Canada in recent times. Check her album Perfume below. Favorite track off the album: "Never Give You Up" ft. fellow Canadian Eternia. Absolute freshness. Both ladies killed it. Kool Krys is definitely an MC to watch out for. - Against The Odds - Blog where DIY and indie collide

"Rapper Kool Krys shares her brightly coloured holiday wish list. It's like a pinata exploded under the tree."

Kool Krys, or Christina Stefanski, defies stereotypes of what you think of when you think of a rapper. By day, this woman hustles tablets as a PR specialist for Sony Canada. By night, she gets her hair did and takes to the mic to pump out badass rhymes that will get you shakin' on the dancefloor. You go Krys! Sometimes we like to rap too. (When we've had a few. And it's not pretty.)

We asked Kool Krys for her holiday wish list because we figured it would be loud and colourful just like this video. We were right! Put some sunglasses on before you view this assortment of super fun prezzies.

1. Polish for painting the Nails in Transit

Being on the run from my office job to the stage, I often paint my nails while in transit. It’s much easier to apply nail art stickers than to paint my nails while the subway or streetcar is moving... Sephora’s OPI Chic Prints for Nails are my top choice because they have a variety of wild animal prints that are easy to apply.

2. Custom kicks for the trendsetter

Proper Reserve resident artist Jimmy Chiale’s vivid canvases are a mash-up of emotional symbols and representations. His works are an immediate reaction to his environment and daily life – trekking around the city wearing Jimmy’s art as sneakers would be very cool.

3. Fly feathers & accessories

I love rocking original feather pieces and jewellery… two of my favourite designers are Canada’s MAFIA Jewellery and Pica Jewellery (see Krys's rad hair extension in pic on left) Every time I visit my hometown Ottawa, I pick up a new eye-catcher from these talented craftswomen from NORML Clothing at the heart of Canada’s Capital City.

4. A girl needs her jams

My fave record store in Toronto is Cosmos Records on Queen St. W. Every inch of the place is filled with vinyl records but somehow the dudes running the store know exactly where to find what you need. Everything from soul to hip hop, Cosmos inspires the music lover and maker.

5. Keeping cool in Canada’s cold

A lady can never have enough hats, especially in Canada’s chilly winter. My first choice for the latest in hat fashions is Big It Up on Queen St W. - She Does The City Blog

"Kool Krys - Listen To Your Art"

t some point, hopefully sooner than later, it will no longer be noteworthy to come across talented female emcees. That’s not to say I’m surprised when I do, but more to say that I am very aware of the lack of women on our Top Ten of 2011. And while I’ve grown to enjoy a lot of Canadian hip hop, my biggest concern to this point has been that for all the talented men rapping and producing that I have come across, the only woman on the scene that I knew of was Eternia. Much to my delight, I recently learned that Eternia did a track with another female Canadian emcee by the name of Kool Krys. As it turns out, this talented woman released a new album in December, and it's a good one. Listen To Your Art is a fun and bold record that demands more room for female voices in Canadian hip hop.

Working with producer Bix and engineer Fresh Kils, Krys packs a lot into a short release. After a short intro, things kick off with the aptly titled “Show Stopper,” a song that bursts with energy built off huge Bo Diddley bass drum hits and blaring horns, while Krys lays down the new fashion of “Pearls and headbands, chains and glasses.” If you don't feel the urge to dance, you might want to check your pulse. From there we move into the Girl Group inspired “Let Me Play It,” a great love letter to hip hop. Things get more intimate on “If You Want,” a slower track built on a mellow saxophone sample playing against a piano sample, all over some gently brushed hi hat and snare. This provides a beautiful backdrop as Krys discusses hopes and dreams with her partner. “Nails in Transit” is easily my favorite song about getting your nails done, with a funky beat that demands to be pumped in your car stereo. “The Voice” is a touching song built with flutes and strings over a simple drum beat that give way to Krys’ lyrics about the power of music to change someone's life. “It’s Sunny,” with Saidah Conrad, is a funky track with beautiful jazz piano and the soulful refrain sung by Conrad recalls some of the best early ’90s NYC hip hop. It’s a dark tale of a car crash, drunk driving, and the divergent paths that her and a former acquaintance have traveled since then. Things finish off strong with the Latin jazz of “Timeout,” which has Krys at her most confident as she stakes her claim in hip hop, without losing perspective or compromising her voice in the process.

My biggest complaint about Listen To Your Art is that it’s not nearly long enough. Every time I get to the end, I’m half-shocked that it’s already over, since I was so into it. It’s a great combination of absolutely bangin’ funky tracks that will get everyone dancing and introspective songs that let you know Krys on a more personal level. Leading the way through the album is the confident and deliberate delivery of Krys on the mic. It's nice to see more women shake things up and offer up a different perspective, but even more so, it's great to hear fun hip hop produced by talented artists. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for a follow up to Listen To Your Art, because I’m hooked. - Scratched Vinyl

Ottawa's only refrigerated outdoor skating rink at Ben Franklin Place will be the site of the festivities of the fundraiser, which will focus on the stories of Operation Come Home, a local charity that provides support to homeless youth in the community.

Though it's been unusually warm this week, the temperature Friday is expected to plummet to -6 C by the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.

The fundraiser offers plenty to do and see, however, even for those who don't skate.

The day begins with Ottawa Morning, which airs on CBC Radio One (91.5 FM) starting at 5:30 a.m. Friday.

More stories will air on All in a Day that afternoon on Radio One starting at 3 p.m., while highlights from the day on CBC News Ottawa starting at 5 p.m. on CBC Television.

The events include:

5:30 to 8:30 a.m. A live broadcast of Ottawa Morning, as host Robyn Bresnahan is joined by musical acts Capital Vox and David Francey. Bridgehead is also providing coffee to the first 200 visitors.

9 to 11:30 a.m. Kids activities, including face painting and a colouring contest, as well holiday stories as read by CBC Ottawa's hosts.

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A lunch time skating party. City skating instructors will also be on site from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to aid those in need.

2 to 2:45 p.m. 'Witches' from Little Witch Press read from their book, "Witches Don't do Winter."

"CBC Ottawa's Share Central raises more than $25K"

Ottawa residents donated more than $25,000 Friday for a local homeless youth centre at CBC Ottawa's annual holiday fundraiser.

Share Central 2011, held this year at Ben Franklin Place, raised $25,330 for Operation Come Home, a local charity that provides support to homeless youth in the community.

People donated by calling in to a phone line or donating online throughout the day, including during the airing of Ottawa Morning and All in a Day, both radio programs were broadcast live from Ben Franklin Place.

While the phone lines closed at 6 p.m., people can still donate online here.

The festivities included storytelling from CBC Ottawa hosts, a lunchtime skating party, kids activities and live music from Capital Vox, David Francey, Kool Krys and Natalia & Montuno. - CBC News Ottawa

"Kool Krys’ New Release: Listen to Your Art"

The title says it all - Listen to Your Art, from hip-hop artist Kool Krys, is a collection of songs crafted from Krys’ experiences, encouraging us all to follow our creative sparks.

Listen to Your Art is a polished mix of Kool Krys‘ raps with solid beats and, at times, a big-band sound, a back alley saxophone, sampled 50s blues, a wandering jazz piano and other varied musical colours that total a collection of 8 fantastic tracks. It’s a welcome dose of creativity from a strong female voice in Indigenous hip-hop.

Kool Krys is selling a limited run of 200 CDs via koolkrys.bandcamp.com where you can also buy a download of the album. - Revolutions Per Minute - RPM

"Buck 65 looks to add new memories to Call the Office lore"

Every time Buck 65 plays Call the Office, it's a story.

An unforgettable story.

It might be the tale of the time the Canadian hip-hopper had to boot a buck-naked female out of his London hotel room.

It might be the gig where Buck 65 (Rich Terfry) held court in the parking lot behind the downtown London club for a posse of eager young Forest City hip-hoppers. That night, he stepped up for his art by telling one young man spouting misogynistic rhymes to shut it down until he could rap right.

Or it could be the first time he played Call the Office. All he did that night was . . . let's let Buck 65 tell that story as a prelude to whatever goes down when he plays the club on Feb. 4.

"I remember the first time I played there. The show was wild and a turntable ended up being lit on fire," Buck 65 said this week. Oh, it was no accident. It was a Top 5 night on the artist's memory list of his most unforgettable gigs. That is over a career going back to at least 1989. when the young Terfry moved from Mount Uniacke, in Nova Scotia's Hants County, to Halifax.

"If there was only five spots on that list, that show would have to be on that list. I'll never forget it," Buck 65 said.

Who could forget the night about 15 years ago when a Canadian hip-hopper decided to imitate a guitar god and immolate an instrument?

"I had the image in my head of Jimi Hendrix. . . . It is such a great iconic rock and roll image. It was an idea I'd had forever. It only ever happened once," he recalled.

Hendrix may have burned his guitar at a few places, including the Monterey Pop Festival. For Buck 65, there was only one time and place to ignite the night. Call the Office.

"I was channelling a little Jimi Hendrix. I couldn't afford to do that every night. The turntable was lit on fire and then smashed at the end of the night.

"The reaction to that, fairly predictably I suppose, was just incredible. People seemed to lose their minds. I felt like I lost mine a little bit."

Buck 65 had actually played London once before at the old Embassy. He's also played such London venues as Aeolian Hall and the John Labatt Centre.

Call the Office is the place where he has known when it's time to be take a stand -- as the hip-hopper did when he had to face down the young rapper.

Call the Office is also the place when he's had to say enough is enough. Well, not Call the Office exactly, The star's hotel room nearby.

To be precise, the bed in that hotel room where there was a woman waiting. She had talked her away over to the hotel saying she wanted to interview him. She'd brought her questions to Call the Office where the hip-hopper had assumed she worked for a college paper.

Buck 65 showed a touching faith in the tenacity of journalists. He also assumed her persistence in trying to get his answers was simply determination to get a story.

His delusion persisted even as he went into the bathroom to change quickly after another wild and sweaty night at Call the Office.

Then, he finally realized the naked truth.

"I come out my bathroom and she is on the bed, completely naked -- and I kicked her out. It was a very bizarre night, but certainly one I will never forget. I've had some wild nights in London," Buck 65 said.

So now he's coming back as part of a winter mini-tour taking him to stops he hasn't played in a while. He has to fit them around Terfry's job as host of CBC Radio 2's (100.5 on the FM dial in London) great afternoon show Drive.

The dates support last year's 20 Odd Years (Warner). As a way of marking two decades since his first record, the hip-hopper asked Canadian vocalists such as Tragically Hip's Gord Downie, Islands' Nick Thorburn and singer-songwriter Jenn Grant to bring their sounds to his tracks and rhythms.

He has also DJ'd at the Junos and won a Juno, worked with Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq and guested on London-born, Halifax-based singer Meaghan Smith's Christmas album.

He's also played Call the Office -- where something always seems to happen for Buck 65 and his fans.

He will be back Saturday, Feb. 4, at the place where he so often sets the night on fire.

"It was as full on as it gets. It was allowed to go completely out of control. People were completely up for it," Buck 65 said of his first gig at Call the Office -- and maybe his next one.

--- --- ---

BUCK 65 ON SHAD

Buck 65 has been following the London hip-hop scene. He knows all about London-raised, B.C.-based Shad, above, a fellow Juno winner.

"The very first time I heard Shad I was deeply impressed. He has made songs. . . . I would use the word 'important' and I wouldn't use that word often or lightly. He has made some contributions that I think are invaluable.

"He's so smart and so thoughtful but then can just rap with the best of them. He appeals on so many different levels." -- Buck 65

"Buck 65 celebrates 20 Odd Years"

Rich Terfry (a.k.a. Buck 65) has worn many hats over the last 20 or so years: b-boy, baseball player, international hip-hop phenom, and radio personality. As these passions have developed, they’ve seeped into one another, allowing him to become something of a renaissance man. His new record, 20 Odd Years, is a celebration of his growth and endurance; an exclamation point on 20 years of an amazing life.

“I try to keep my ego in check and I try to remain humble in what I’m doing, but if there’s any aspect of what I’ve done that I’m proud of, it’s my longevity, because I know that’s not an easy thing,” he said. “It’s really hard, not just to stick around, but to have a career that grows over a period of time. So I thought it was worth acknowledging. There have been a lot of twists over the years, a lot of adventures, and that’s why I chose to call it 20 Odd Years, you know, with the double-meaning. It’s been a very interesting life that this thing has given me and it just kind of amazed me to stop and consider that, like ‘Holy smokes, 20 years!’ It almost sounds ridiculous. But nevertheless, here I am, still trying to figure it out.”

Despite coming up in the great Halifax pop explosion of the early 90s, Terfry wasn’t exactly handed the keys to the kingdom. In a scene dominated by noisy, guitar-pop bands (particularly Sloan, who spearheaded a minirevolution with their first couple releases and turned many heads to the fertile ground of Halifax’s vibrant musical community) Buck 65 (Stinkin’ Rich at the time) was still something of a square-peg.

“I found a little bit of a (hip-hop) community when I moved into Halifax, but that’s not where I grew up. I’m from a small town and there was nothing there. I mean, culturally there was practically nothing. Hip-hop? Forget about it. That’s basically why my situation is such that not only am I rapping, I’m making my beats; doing the DJ-ing myself. I had to teach myself everything ‘cause there was nobody else who was interested. I knocked around a few years, tried to release a few things on cassettes, on my own. I was approached one day by Chris Murphy of Sloan, offering to put my stuff out. So a handful of my first releases were on (Sloan’s) murderecords. So we kind of developed in parallel in those early days. It’s been interesting to watch how the 20 years have developed for both of us.”

Remaining vital in the grind of the music industry is a game of keeping yourself interested and inspired; of finding new ways to connect to people and new ways to express yourself — none of which has ever been a problem for the Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia native. When he needed to find like-minded collaborators, he moved to the big city. When his shoulder deteriorated and scuttled any plans for a baseball career (he was scouted by the mighty New York Yankees), he started training himself to throw left-handed. When he began a legitimate career as on-air personality at the CBC, he was not moved to slow his own musical career; rather, he found inspiration in the wealth of tunes at his fingertips. By remaining open and curious, Terfry has avoided the pitfalls that have crippled so many of his peers.

“I have more ideas and I feel more inspired now than I ever have. I think that has a lot to do with what my priorities are and how open-ended I have let (my career) be. I never carved out something for myself where I had to be one specific thing, where people are expecting something particular from me. If I was expected to do the same thing then maybe it would’ve burned out, but I’ve always just kind of wandered wherever I’ve chosen. As I go through my life and travel more and I have more experiences, it just seems like there’s more to dive in to. I felt like I had very little to say when I started and now there’s just not enough time in the day. The only thing that’s ever limited me is my own imagination and that seems to be stronger than ever.”
