KORY ISTACE AND THE TIME PIRATES (Sharp Teeth)
KORY ISTACE AND THE TIME PIRATES (Sharp Teeth)

This genre-bending debut displays aspects of C&W, roots, blues, rock, soul, punk, and even flamenco. Though Kory has written all ten tracks from the "folk singer/songwriter" perspective, the arrangements are creative, catchy, and fun. Recorded in a minimalistic setting, the record successfully emotes an atmosphere often associated with a different time in music production.

Produced by: Kory Istace. Engineered by: Ryan Shotton, Kory Istace and Cory Wilke. Mixed by: Kory Istace and Ryan Shotton. Songwriter: Kory Istace (track 10 with Mark Whitehead). More info: www.myspace.com/koryi - mysask.com

"CD reviews - Nov./2007"

Sharp Teeth is the most recent effort from Kory Istace and the Time Pirates, musicians who spent the summer turning heads at the Cathedral Village Arts Festival, The Gateway Festival in Bengough, and the Regina Folk Festival. A raucous album that accurately captures the "cursin', sweatin', whorin', and bettin'" aesthetic that exemplifies Istace and company's live show, this release is sure to be among the standouts from the Regina music scene in 2007.
Istace's renegotiated folk sound is characterized by his whiskey-and-cigarettes voice that runs the gamut from the Neil Young-esque keening on "The Dark Side of the Road" to the gravelly roar reached at the climax of "The Ballad of Iron Jim". Istace is ably accompanied by the driving rhythms provided by Brad Weiss on bass and Nathan Ottenson on percussion, and the skillful guitar work of Ryan Shotton. Despite their youthful faces, The Time Pirates play with the kind of cohesiveness usually only demonstrated by musicians who have shared the stage hundreds of times.
Standout tracks include "The Ballad of Iron Jim" and "I've Been Missin' You ('cause my aim ain't what it used to be)". In "Mexiconspiracy" Istace muses, "There's a second gunman on the grassy knoll/ Who killed JFK? There's a second gunman on the grassy knoll/ Was it the CIA?" It's easily among the best-crafted songs recorded by Regina musicians this year.

Bio

Kory Istace has been performing his brand of renegotiated folk music at festivals and venues around Western Canada for over nine years, sharing stages with some of Canada's favourite touring acts. He has collaborated with the Time Pirates since 2007, playing stages at The Regina Folk Festival, The Gateway Festival, The Ness Creek Festival, South Country Fair, Field Festival, and at countless venues from Saskatoon to Cadillac, and Calgary to Winnipeg.
After five years, and three full-length albums, Kory Istace and the group have established themselves as one of the most prolific bands in Saskatchewan. Their affinity for genre exploration is self-evident throughout their discography. On the their latest disc, there are resonances of country, bluegrass, folk, blues, rock, and doo-wop. The songwriting and delivery of Kory is a strong highlight of a talented group. His lyrics depict universal truths in an undeniably personal manner, and he delivers them with a conviction that few can replicate.
