"[Double Feature] Tim Cross – “Why” / Tim Cross & Burger – “Lacoste”"

The internet strikes again.

Check out this song I found on Soundcloud recently from a 19-year-old emcee from New Orleans named Tim Cross. “Why” is an introspective tune that showcases Tim Cross’ raw talent.

I first discovered Tim Cross on Pigeons & Planes, thanks to his song titled “Lacoste”, which features Burger (another young aspiring artist from N.O.). The Apollo Cream production did exactly what Burger and Tim wanted it to do: it put them on the map. - The Fresh Heir

These two New Orleans emcees may be a little too gritty on the sensitive ears but that could be a good thing. - The Source

"LISTEN TO BURGER AND TIM CROSS, TEENAGE RAPPERS FROM NEW ORLEANS, ON “LACOSTE”"

Earlier this year, we put together a post called How To Get Your Music Posted on Blogs. Burger, an 18-year-old rapper from New Orleans, didn’t read that post. In it, we advised artists not to pitch music via Twitter—not because we don’t like when artists do that, because we know others don’t. But Twitter is where Burger decided to make his pitch.

“How about you guys start posting actual Pigeons on your blog instead of all of those Planes,” he tweeted at us. “What about us? the artists who literally are ‘unknown’ and are looking for exposure?”

So I listened, a little annoyed that he suggested we “start posting Pigeons,” since we post unknown, independent artists all the time and that’s one of the foundations of the site. I was ready to listen and dismiss. But Burger sent a song, “Lacoste,” and the shit was impressive. He had a sharp way with words like Earl Sweatshirt, but less sedated and a little more modern. Here’s what we now know about the young spitter:

Burger’s the guy on the first verse. He’s 18 and from New Orleans, and he’s part of a crew that started up during his sophomore year of high school. The crew is called called Krewe of 77. On the second verse is Tim Cross. “We realized there isn’t a lot of good music presented by the youth coming out of our city so we decided to step up and try to make a change. Not everything has to be over some fucking mainstream ‘trap’ instrumental that they probably ripped from YouTube.” His influences include MF DOOM and early Kanye West. He records most of his songs in his bedroom, and he’s planning to drop a project called Monotone in 2014.

Cheers to independent young artists and reckless Twitter pitches. - Pigeons and Planes

"CAUTIOUS KLAY AT WORK"

Cautious Klay is a 19 year old artist from New Orleans, La and member of the “krewe of 77″ signed under “OneDayThoughCollective” (ODTC). Always had a love for music, and began making my own in the fall of 2013 with the help of my Krewe-mates and best friends. Since the beginning of his musical career, he has released 3 songs ( 2 in 2013, 1 in 2014), all the while working towards his first project The CRAP Album EP which will be released in summer 2014. This artist plans to be around for a while and we see nothing stopping that from happening. - Rudeboy Magazine

"5 ON IT: PERMEATE AND MUTATE"

Pablo Mirena ft. Tim Cross – “Let It Ring”

Though tools like Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Twitter, Vine, Instagram and any number of other yet to be invented apps and services mean constant clutter for the wandering listener, they’ve also benefitted young creators by largely abolishing the barriers once raised by geography. Concepts, sounds, and styles can spread in the time it takes to retweet, exposing curious minds to a constant meal.

With catchy oddball single “Let It Ring,” New Orleans rapper Pablo Mirena echoes Father in its content (it’s hard to not think of “Fliphone Nokia” on first listen), bizarre sense of humor (the opening line: “Found Fetty Wap’s eye in a pyramid”), and similarly hypnotic monotone flow.

“Let It Ring” is better heard than analyzed, mesmerizing off-kilter rap music.

As a bonus, listen to the equally bizarre “Mondo,” wherein Mirena flexes a bit of Earl Sweatshirt influence and further showcases his left of center wit.
