Bio

Kristeva Grey (pron. Kris-TAY-vuh) began taking piano lessons with her mother at the tender age of 4, but frequent temper tantrums at the home studio quickly earned her a reputation as a diva, and regularly scheduled lessons petered out by jr. high. Luckily, grade school band introduced a new kind of structure and discipline, and the deviant 10 yr old chose oboe as her primary instrument.

Since then, she has added English Horn, saxophones, flute, tin whistle, and guitar to the list. With performance training in classical & jazz styles, and influences ranging from American folk-rock, bluegrass, & pop to world music & electronica, Kristeva is a skilled and versatile musician with quite a good ear (but only one, literally, as she's 90% deaf in her right ear). Her voice provides a natural folksy clarity and reflects the story-telling nature of her songs, which play out like journal entries or personal letters set to music.

Because of a few of these very specific and personal songs, she has built a steady following in the LGBTQA community. In the summer of 2004, she performed downtown at The Loop Theatre as part of Chicago's Pride Week, and continues to play at events for Spectrum DePaul and Center On Halsted. She also enjoys performing for house parties, class presentations, and on trains.

Currently, she's working with sound engineer Cristy Troia, on a self-titled debut album due for release sometime... in the near future, from her own Yellow Rose Records. She graduated from DePaul in November, with a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition. Entering college, Kristeva only had the equivalency of 3 yrs of formal piano lessons. As a senior, she repeated Piano VI, having previously failed DePaul's group piano class at multiple levels.

She is her mother's biggest source of shame and disappointment.
