"FINALLY SOMETHING NEW"

Amid the self-indulgent singer/songwriter drudge that seeps through the club scene like molasses, Kristi Laura has unveiled something new: roots music with excitement. In other words, she cares if you like it.

Sunday, May 20th at Wicked Willy’s in the Village, Kristi launched into vocals that soared over acoustic accompaniment in ways that shocked the audience. No mousy, half-apologetic introspection here. Kristi seemed intent on singing a hole through the back wall as she ripped through a set of songs that revolved around themes of defiance, self-assurance and “I’ll love you, but I won’t lean on you.”

She brought out a good sized, highly-vocal crowd. No wonder the owners of the club have asked her to do a two-hour set in July. Something new in the club scene. Finally.

KRISTI LAURA

“I used to try to fit in. Now I never sacrifice who I am,” says Kristi Laura.

That explains how a girl tending bar in Manhattan can hang on to her love of roots music.

She had to fight for her own musical style at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Everyone else was studying musical theater, but Kristi was feeling rootsy.

“I always tried to get my friends to listen to my kind of music. “It suits me; it’s in my bones.” Kristi’s style is her own—tough, brave and gutsy.

“It’s not about everybody knowing who I am; it’s about making difference. I want to be something they never expected.”

Her style ranges from the sarcastic and sad, “Ninety-nine Heartaches to Go” to the rollicking look back on the “best love of our lives” in “A Little Too.”

And her take on the ballad, “Disappear Till Dawn” is both vulnerable and seductive.

Recording these songs has made her hungry for the road. “I know that touring is where I will find myself as an artist,” Kristi says.

Just when you thought you’d seen all the look-alikes and sound-alikes, there’s a new girl in town.
