""Confessions of a Songbird" Album Review"

“Confessions of a Songbird” is an album that will play the heartstrings of any pop fans out there, and is definitely radio worthy. - Creative Spotlights

"Confessions of a Songbird: Former Uconn Student Kristin Errett has been called the next Sara Bareilles"

When Kristin Errett came to UConn she had no idea that she would be leaving soon, with a ticket to Los Angeles in hand and a record deal in the works.
Errett, a Connecticut native, is a thriving vocalist and pianist. Her work has drawn comparisons to the popular Sara Bareilles and über-hip Norah Jones. More importantly, the 21-year-old musician recently released her first album, and will soon be embarking on a summer tour through New England.
Errett enrolled at UConn in the fall of 2008. She adopted a major in liberal arts, and planned to graduate just like every other student in her class. But after joining Husky Records and performing at a number of its events, Errett was hooked up with a producer from the Killingsworth Recording Company in Hollywood.
Two years after starting college, Errett was already crafting her musical career. She split her time between California and New York to pen some songs and collaborate with three other writers. Eventually, she moved out to L.A. to record her debut album, “Confessions of a Songbird.” Errett spent a total of three months in the studio. After much fine-tuning, “Songbird” was put out in stores in April 2011.
Errett did not abandon her education when she left Storrs. She takes classes while sustaining her career, which she said is difficult but manageable. The singer does miss UConn, especially when she catches up with old friends and has cravings for DP Dough, she said. “I would love to do a show on campus,” Errett said. The only problem is she’s not in touch with the new officers of Husky Records.
Errett’s songbird tendencies were revealed at a young age. She began playing piano when she was 10, and was interested in musical theater while growing up.
“I’m pretty much inspired by everything,” Errett said, “especially country music.” When she writes lyrics she doesn’t just draw from personal experiences. “If I hear a good story I think, ‘I need to make a song out of this,” she said.
Despite the success of her freshman record, Errett isn’t sitting around idly. “Right now I’m trying to play as much as I can,” the artist said. Her venues of choice have ranged from local, such as Pub-32 in Storrs, to notorious, like The Bitter End in NYC. And although she is unsigned for the time being, she continues to write, build up her fan base and promote her CD. Additionally, she is putting together an acoustic version of ‘Songbird,’ and is drawing up plans to form a band in the fall.
As a message to all aspiring musicians, Errett said that organization and social networking are the keys to advancing in the industry. “Follow what’s big,” she said. Having a website, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube is essential for stardom. Errett can be found on all these platforms. Her website kristinerrett.com provides visitors with the chance to listen to all ten tracks from “Songbird” for free. This includes Errett’s personal favorite, “Sparks.” On top of that, those who sign up for her mailing list are rewarded with a free download. - Uconn The Daily Campus

"Confessions of a Songbird Album Review"

Kristin Errett is on her way to a Grammy...bottom line! Those who like Sarah Bareilles,
will enjoy Kristin. The latest EP by this 21 year-old musician is cleverly titled
'Confessions of a Songbird' and gives us 10 sassy girl power songs filled with great
singing and musical production.

Kristin starts the album off with "Don't Call Me Sweetheart", a song full of moxy and
heart-on-the-sleeve attitude. In the song she tells this guy that his lame lines and
attempts at flattery are not working on her. She says "Never call me honey, I'm not
always nice. Never call me sugar if you don't want spice. If you were smart you'd know
it from the start. Don't call me sweetheart." Girls will love this song and guys will not,
because it was meant to put the male ego in check. Good for you Kristin!

Another wonderful song is "All I Want Is Everything" because it's a clear description of
what Kristin wants. Like 'Don't Call Me Sweetheart', the chorus on 'All I Want' sums it all
up. On the chorus Errett sings "All I want is everything, no matter what I do. All I want is
everything and everything is you. Nothing more than what I need. All I want is
everything." The drums, the fender rhodes, the guitar, and the bass just work so well
together with Kristin's incredible voice. One of my favorite songs!

The best song on this EP, which in my opinion is a major radio hit waiting to happen, is
"Happily Never After". What an incredible piano rock song this is! I couldn't stop
playing! I could go on and on about Kristin and her music, but I can't...so I'm going to
conclude by saying...GO GET THIS GIRL'S ALBUM NOW!!! - I Am Entertainment Magazine

"Indie Songbird"

She started taking piano lessons as a child and, now barely past 21, Kristin Errett already has released a CD and is touring the east coast to bring her original songs to intimate settings, where a dual-generation audience is discovering her and the CD Confessions of a Songbird.
"When I perform at colleges and in bars, I naturally tend to draw a younger audience." Kristin tells STYLE SOURCE. "But when I tour, I talk about recreating a '70s sound, so I've had people around my parents' age-in their 50s-buy the album and become fans."
While noting that the '70s vibe echoes the music of Carole King, Laura Nyro, The Eagles, and Chicago. Kristin hastens to add the current cadre of piano-pop ladies among her influences: Sara Bareilles, Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch, Regina Spektor, Missy Higgins, Ingrid Michaelson. "I really aspire to be like Ingrid." Kristin says, "because she has a huge fan base but isn't necessarily going the normal route."
One path on the normal route Kristin has embraced is her first music video, for her song, "Don't Call Me Sweetheart". She reports, it was such a fun day to create the video. We did the whole set in party scenes- popping balloons, busting open a pinata." Catch Kristin's music on her website, KristinErrett.com. - Style Source Magazine

"In-Depth Look at Singer/Songwriter Kristin Errett"

Reminiscent of fellow singer/songwriters Sara Bareilles and Sarah McLachlan, Kristin Errett's beautiful voice is only matched by her piano skills. Errett's sound is heavily influenced by '70s singer/songwriters, giving her a slightly different approach to her craft than her contemporaries. Upon hearing Carole King's "Tapestry," Errett begged her parents to let her take piano lessons. The rest is history. “I knew after my first performance at The Bitter End that I had to do this for a living. It was such a rush,” Errett says.

Now, this classically-trained pianist is finding her own voice, penning bubbly, upbeat fun songs -- boasting lyrics like "Never call me honey, I’m not always nice / Never call me sugar if you don’t want spice / If you were smart you’d know it from the start / Don’t call me sweetheart" -- and gorgeous ballads, all of which are featured on her debut album "Confessions of a Songbird."

For Errett, it's simple,“My ultimate goal for my music is to achieve a lasting career and reach as many people as I can, sharing what I love." She's well on her way to achieving just that. - College News Magazine

"1st Place Winner of Woodsongs Singer/Songwriter Contest"

Last night saw the 1st annual WoodSongs, a singer/songwriter contest hosted by UConn Dining Services at Whitney Dining Hall in East Campus. Ten hopeful musicians, selected from a pool of over 20 applicants, competed for community recognition, as well as a trophy and certificate of achievement. Each had a chance to play two original compositions. Five judges oversaw the event, hailing from diverse backgrounds such as Sing-A-Day Music Centre in Coventry, the Connecticut Songwriter's Association.
Kristin Errett captured the first place win for the event. Featured on the piano, her two songs included the energetic, Carole King-like "Take Me Away," followed by the Jim Brickmanesque "Look Me in the Eyes." Errett's performance featured elaborate playing on the keyboard, synced up with powerful, expressive vocals, for two well put together and professional-sounding songs. - Uconn Daily Campus

"Artist Spotlight Interview"

IAE: Please tell us where you’re from and what inspired you to pursue a career in music?
I’m from Fairfield, CT. While I was growing up, the idea of pursuing a career in music always seemed like a no-brainer for me. I was that kid at soccer practice who was dancing around in circles on the other side of the field and knew the words to every song on the radio before I could write my name. I asked for voice lessons when I was about eight and started performing all over the area. I honestly can’t remember what actually inspired me to pursue a career in music. It’s definitely a long haul just to avoid a 9-5 job though, so I think it’s safe to say a significant amount of love for music went into my decision.
IAE: Who influenced you the most, musically, and what was it about their music that led to the development of your sound?
Well I’ve definitely been influenced by a number of artists. If I had to choose just one, I would have to say Carole King. The first time I heard her album, Tapestry, I fell in love with her music. She’s a genius, that’s why so many people have covered her work. I started taking piano lessons in fourth grade because I just wanted to learn how to play her songs and consequently today my music is all piano-driven.
IAE: Tell us about your latest project and what can we expect to hear on it?
My new album is called, “Confessions of a Songbird”. I recorded out in LA this past winter. Half the songs have a contemporary piano-pop sound. The other half have a bit of a 70s vibe. On a few songs, I actually play a Fender Rhodes. The first track on the album, “Don’t Call Me Sweetheart” pretty much sets the tone lyrically. As implied in the title, I don’t hold back at all with my lyrics. They’re honest and bold but in hopefully a fun, tongue-and-cheek way. I really had such a great time recording this album and I hope people enjoy the music as much as I enjoyed recording it.
IAE: As an independent artist, what’s been the toughest part about pursuing a music career in today’s economy?
Well I’m only 21. I’ve been working at this for just a few years now so I wouldn’t really know what it would be like pursuing music in a different economy. Travel expenses can be a lot but I’ve yet to come across anything so challenging that I’ve wanted to give up. I’m a firm believer that when a door closes, find a window.
IAE: What advice can you give to other artists out there who are trying to establish themselves?
Well I’m certainly not an expert haha but I suppose it’s important to know that we are not in competition. As many artists today are choosing to go the indie route, we can offer a lot of support to each other. I think it’s important to surround yourself with positive people. Like anything in life though, no one cares as much about your career as you do. That’s scary but I think it’s liberating to know that you’re future is really in your hands. Also, I’ve found it to be very helpful if you can describe your music and who you are as in artist in about 15 seconds. Lastly, just get out and play and meet other musicians. - I Am Entertainment Magazine

"Featured Artist Interview"

Kristin Errett is an Acoustic Pop Singer / Songwriter from Fairfield, close to New York City. After checking out Kristin’s acoustic performances on YouTube we were keen at Song Revelation to offer her a feature interview so that we could share her talent with you. Read the full interview below to find out about how Kristin became interested in music, which modern day artists she’s inspired by and what she’s hoping to achieve for the rest of 2011.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
Sitting at a piano in a vintage dress, playing piano-driven, often 70s inspired, acoustic pop, storytelling with tongue and cheek lyrics, I’m a 21 year old musician who can’t imagine doing anything else.

Q: What is your musical background?
I used to do theatre. That’s how I learned to sing. I’ve performed in everything from operas, to straight dramas, to gospel choirs. Growing up, I basically auditioned for any organization I could where I’d have the opportunity to get on a stage. I started taking piano lessons in fourth grade and stuck with it. When I was about 17 I decided to give up theatre to start focusing on songwriting.

Q: How was 2010 for you?
2010 was a great year. I met my production team for “Confessions of a Songbird” which is my new album. I basically spent the second half of the year writing, which was an incredible learning experience.

Q: Who inspires you musically?
I remember stealing “Tapestry” from my dad’s CD collection when I was about nine and just completely fell in love with Carole King. She’s the reason I asked to take piano lessons. Fleetwood Mac has also been another big inspiration to me. In general, I listen to a lot of 70s music. I actually just recently bought a 1973 Fender Rhodes. I think I was probably born in the wrong time.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. I’m in awe of them. I’m seeing them live for the third time this September. To see such talented musicians rising to the rightfully deserved success that they are achieving is inspiring.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
Stevie Wonder. But that’s probably every musician’s dream.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
Every song is different for me so I don’t necessarily have a specific process. I do generally write music first though and I try to write as often as I can, even if I don’t feel inspired. I think that’s important.

Q: Where are you based?
I’m from Fairfield, CT. I travel a lot to perform though.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
It’s a great town. It’s actually where John Mayer grew up. We’re on the water with a lot of nice beaches and great bars to perform at. It’s also an hour train ride to NYC, which is pretty convenient.

Q: What are you currently working on?
I’m shooting a music video in New York this month for “Don’t Call Me Sweetheart”, the first track off my album, which I’m really looking forward to!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
This past winter, I went to LA to record, “Confessions of a Songbird” at Killingsworth Recording Co. and it was the most exciting experience of my life. I worked with some incredibly talented musicians, writers, and producers who were just such kind and down-to-earth people on top of it. The whole experience seemed unreal. I remember crying in the cab on the way back to the airport.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
Someone told me, “If you don’t play, it’s a wasted day”. So I’m focused on performing as much as I can and I’m hoping for a positive response. I’d be thrilled if by the end of this year, anyone who saw me live and enjoyed my performance tells a friend.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
Absolutely! On Aug. 7th, I’ll be at The Bitter End in New York, NY, which is one of my favorite venues to perform at. I’ll be playing throughout the New England area this entire month and you can check out the dates on my website at www.kristinerrett.com.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Sure! If you go to my website and join my mailing list, you’ll receive a free download of “Mr. Imperfect” which is a track off my album. Plus, joining my mailing list is a great way to stay in touch with me and receive more free stuff. It’s win win!!
