"THE FIRST 5 POINT TRACK IN THE NO-NAME GAME!!!"

Artist/Track #5:
Krumbz - 114 Barz (128kb mp3)
Rating: 5/5

This is some truely nice audio! Hip-hop battle roots seem to have inspired this track. Don't let the name "Krumbz" discourage you. I havent heard anything like this in quite some time, and I encourage everyone to do yourself a favor and listen to this! The production is amazing and the emcee in question runs it like a marathon. Smart lyrics, great production, wonderful mixing and perfect delivery... I fail to find any flaws within. KRUMBZ COMIN' UP!

The breakdown:

Just to sum up briefly to all readers who've never heard of him - which I assume is a lot of y'all - Krumbz is a 27 year old emcee (due to turn 28 on June 24th). He's white (if that matters to anybody at all, I know it doesn't to me...) and is repping New Jersey to the fullest. In 2002 he released a stellar debut album, 'Kontentz Under Pressure', which is produced in its entirety by Cue Labs. His songs are often perceived as 'battle' tracks, but this is a misconception. 'KUP' exhibits a wide range of styles, from battle/aggression to emotional shit, social issues and even a dope love song. Krumbz is currently unsigned and sells his music over the internet. To buy this album at a snip, please visit cdbaby.com <http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/krumbz> - the highly regarded internet sales portal for independent and/or unsigned artists. Cdbaby ships internationally at a low cost for those of us who live outside of the United States.
Before I get down to the review, I would like to give a huge thanks to Krumbz himself for taking time out of his schedule to let NRnA get an interview <inteviewkrumbz.html>. I know artists - signed or unsigned - are busy individuals, so we at NRnA take off our hats to Krumbz for sparing a minute for his fans. Make sure y'all read the interview, 'cos Krumbz drops us some news about his upcoming album, which of course will be reviewed <rapreviewz.html> here, and will hopefully be as dope as 'KUP'.

So, here goes...

'KUP' begins with a 'Cue Labs Intro', which is basically an ill scratch-ridden Cue Labs beat, setting the scene for the album and flowing nicely into the opening song, the title track 'Kontentz Under Pressure'. This cut - one of the dopest on the album - starts off with a humorous intro from Krumbz, who states "Aiyo what up, this is Krumbz and I just wanna thank all you dumb bastards for buying my shit. Yo I'm gonna go get a pack of cigarettes, a big bag of Funions and a deuce of Heiny wit' ya money...". Krumbz then proceeds to drop ill and hillarious punchlines upon the listener's ear ("And chicks love me 'cos in the bed I'm a f**kin' savage/The last bitch I f**ked is still stuck to the f**kin' matress/But f**k that shit, who the f**k wants to f**k a fat bitch?"). Krumbz proves that he is funny, quick-witted and foul-mouthed, yet despite the humour, the song is latent with frustration, hence the title. The opening portion of the album seems to be a platform for Krumbz' aforementioned battle/aggressive mentality, with him constantly droppong stellar punchlines, both amusing and disgusting the listener in unison. 'K.R.U.M.B.Z..' is a perfect example of this mentality. The song - a vanity track - exhibits some of Kumbz's finest wordplay, with lines like "This kid approached me and asked me what's my tape like/So I spit in his face and asked him 'what does it taste like'...". A nice track by any standard, from the excitable lyrics and hot punchlines, to the frenetic, hyped-up production. 'K.R.U.M.B.Z.' is the perfect predecessor for 'No Gimmickz' (my personal favourite track), on which Krumbz drops the absolute truth over a piano laced beat on the chorus/intro, stating "There's too many emcees and not enough mics/[You not hype, you not nice, you just not rockin' it right]/There's too many DJs and not enough wax/[You not phat, you don't scratch, you're the definition of wack". Krumbz then proceeds to lyrically annihilate fakeness in contemporary Hip-Hop, calling out rappers who pretend to pack heat and hustle, and wack radio DJs. In a moment of clever irony, Krumbz proves how 'bling' tracks should sound, with the line "Now kids play hockey on my chest 'cos my chain's so f**kin' iced out".
'The Only One' is the oibligatory love song...with a massive twist. Krumbz begins by describing "his type of bitch" and then proceeds to detail the relationship's breakdown on wax, talking about how "the girl of his dreams" turned out to be different than she seemed, becoming shady and "strung out on drugs". The chorus features a slice of Krumbz' humour, with lines professing his love, followed by "But here's a secret/You're not the only one I wanna sleep with...", which would sound ill over any old beat, let alone this dope Cue Labs joint. On 'The Sickness', Krumbz literally spits some of his 'sickness', with disgusting yet hilarious lines like "haven't ran trains on a girl yet/But I've driven a train over one", intermingled with equally dope 'cleaner' punchlines. 'Jerzy Kidz' marks a point at which 'KUP' becomes considerably more serious and in-depth, with a gritty 'hood track detailing life on Jersey's streets. Krumbz' flow is flawless on this track, shouting out all the people he rolls with, "I roll with Spanish kids who scrap/Crazy Asians that mack/Big black cats with straps/And skinny white dudes with bats...".
'Jerzy Kidz' is followed by 'One Life', which is Krumbz' own favourite joint on 'KUP' (check the interview <interviewkrumbz.htnl>...), on which he speaks for the first time in detail about his seemingly hard life, calling on events such as his brother's death, his troubled relationship with his parents and his struggles with drink and drugs. However, Krumbz' chorus transforms strife into positivity, with the uplifting lines "You only live once/Life is a game so try to win it/You only live once/So try to push it to its limit...". The now-heavier content on this album is broken up with a short musical interlude, again showcasing some dope Cue Labs proction, and providing a nice set-up for 'Ghost In a Shell', a harrowing imaginary tale of Krumbz' own death; a track on which he reflects upon life and mortality, and shouts out all the people he's "missing". The Cue Labs beat is shrill and eeire and fits the lyrics like a glove. This is a nice concept which is rarely xecuted with success by other emcees. '114 Barz' provides a little alleviation from the album's depth, bringing us back to the ultra-lyrical, fiery punchlines Krumbz personna we heard on the first few tracks on the album, with hot disses such as "So stop steppin' or get ripped in two within seconds/It's like gettin' chained to two planes flyin' in different directions". The Cue Labs production is now hyped-up once again, with a rowdy and brash beat. 'Motion Picturez' is an ill concept track, on which Krumbz cleverly drops movie references in his verses, with lines like "Most bitches talk shit/But there's somethin' about Mary" and "Left my girl 'Sleepless in Seattle', now she won't 'Stand By Me'...". Once again, a nice concept which could have sounded wack as hell coming from another emcee's mouth.
'Sour Milk' and 'Bitchez' mark the one point at which this album temporarily dips. Basically 'ho-bashing' tracks, Krumbz drops some sick and disgusting - and at times humorous lines - but it's pretty lacklustre considering the standard which the first part of the album has set. As a female, I'm not even remotely offended by the lyrics on these tracks, I just expected a lot more from an emcee like Krumbz who has a much wider lyrical variety to rely upon, rather than going for the cheap shot which is bound to be a hit for the fellas. That said, Krumbz redeems the album to the utmost with the last portion. 'A Bee Ceez' is another concept track, which Krumbz seems particularly proud of. Whist the whole 'Alphabet' concept has been somewhat played out in Hip-Hop, Krumbz pulls off his interpretation of it effortlessly, dropping Hip-Hop related words in the intro, such as "Alcohol, Bitches, Cops…", and finishes up the track with pure alphabetic lyrical onslaught. 'A Bee Ceez' marks the end of Krumbz sliding back into his lyrically-focussed yet lighthearted persona, with the following track coming in the form of the excellent 'Don't Call Me'. The track features N8than Speed and addresses an issue both him and Krumbz are familiar with - racial discrimination. Krumbz drops science about his skin colour being a hinderance in the black-dominated genre, whilst Speed discusses his experience with racism as a black man in a wider social context. The chorus is particularly poignant, with both emcees exchanging the lines "Don't call me, don't call me/Don't call me nigger, cracka/Don't call me, don't call me/Don't call me cracka, nigger…" over the piano-laced Cue Labs beat. The pentultimate track, 'Goodbye To Yesterday' is another on which we hear Krumbz bare his soul, speaking on issues such as his upbringing and his musical come-up. The track begins on an essentially downbeat note, but is lightened with the uplifting chorus, which displays Krumbz' "light at the end of the tunnel" persona. It's a nice way to wind down an album, as it sums up and incorporates all themes and styles previously exhibited on 'KUP', before stepping into the final track 'The End Of The World'. Featuring J-Street and Cess, 'The End Of The World' is basically a showcase for three talented emcees, and ends the album on a buzzing note, with a brash, rowdy beat from Cue Labs.
In summary, 'KUP' is close to perfection. This album rates alongside any 'classic' release, despite the fact that it was released without the aid of a major record label and a massive budget. Once you cop 'KUP', it will be in constant rotation, because there's something here to suit every mood and every taste. Just buy the damn thing…
Many thanks to Krumbz for the interview - www.NRNA.com

Easily the best punchlines ever thought up. Cue Labs is great with beats and Krumbz is great with pens. Everything is amazing when I heard "the sickness" I couldn't get my jaw to pop back into place for like three days. Really tight hooks and punchlines. The problem is that every punchline is delivered exactly the same, and while you'll still laugh everytime, it gets really annoying by the end. Watch out for this guy in the future though.

Good album, best demo I've ever heard
Reviewer: Malicious
3.5 stars... Nice drop for a first, good beats, sick flows, almost flawless but a lil repetitive, could've used more interludes or some skits. It's 3 years old, and it's hard to fathem, but the best is yet to come. This album isnt even Krumbz an Cue Labs in their prime people, be afraid.. be very afraid.

An album that you can listen all the way through.
Reviewer: James Martin
The album starts off with an interesting intro that contains a great dj mix on it. From then on the songs just flow with real life experiences told through excellent lyricim. Each song has its own style that makes it easy to listen to. The beats are good also and fit each verse well. Some songs that stand out are Don't Call Me, 114 Barz, and Bitchez with catchy lyrics and good organization. The cd is very well done and well worth 5 stars. Much better than most out there.

The shit commercial rap isn't letting you hear.
Reviewer: SagaciousKJB
This CD displays the lyrical talent that's still unfound by many record labels. Three of the very most memorable songs on this CD are A Bee Cee's, 114 Barz, and Motion Picturez. The conceptuality of A Bee Cee's, a fast-flowing, vocabulary-testing, hard-core-hiphop alliteration to a beat that truly bonds poetry and hiphop, and Motion Picturez which combines the titles of moviez with punchlines so clever you'll only come to understand them two bars later. 114 Barz, amongst many others, is a track that just displays the raw, hard lyrical talent of this artist. 114 bars of a fast flow, hard punches complex rhyme-scheming, and a delivery comparable to an artist like Immortal Technique. The beats themselves could make this CD go platnium easily if it were commercially available. The combination of many instruments, even some other than percussion, sound effects, and actual variation in the beat make the musical aspects of this CD surpass that of most others. If you're use to the simple kick, kick, snare setup most artists use, you'll definitely find this enjoyable. I chose those three because I feel they best demonstrate what's presented on this album: Orginality, unique concepts, and blazing, hard-core, skill-filled raw lyricism. There's not a single track on this CD that I would consider subpar, and there's very little comercially-available tracks that I would place on a higher bar than most of the tracks on this CD. Combining the lyrics of Krumbz, which are already so superb the guy could probably out-rap most commercial arists on an acapella, and the beats from Cue Labs produces something that will seriously take you by surprise. If you think you've heard the best, listening to this CD will make you reconsider.

Krumbz is the new millenium of rap. he keeps it real with stories, punchlines, and metaphors. this album is straight fire. NO ONE should sleep on this.

Surprisingly Amazed
Reviewer: Mike (EatShytFukker)
Blew this guy off as another wannabe but after listening to the cd... I was definitely wrong. I was seriously amazed by how good Krumbz is. This is the cd I bump the most in my car and it just doesn't seem to get old. Awaiting his next cd. I'm definitely going to BUY that cd.

Impressive
Reviewer: SilentBen
When I first went to listen to a Krumbz song I thought he'd be nothing special - like most people who post some songs on the internet. Man was I ever wrong. I was really impressed by what I heard. Krumbz nearly blew me away with his compleate and absolute mutilation of the english language. Kontentz Under Pressure, from start to finish, is nothing short of fire; and not "catchy club fire", but straight hard-hitting infectious lyrical heat. Some songs you feel are there merely to show you his ability, which, on tracks such as "ABeeCeez", he does to great effect. But there is also some deep music that shows he's more than just a wordsmith. Despite the impression this review may give off i do not think Krumbz is the best thing since sliced bread and this album suggests that there is a lot of room for improvement, but overall this is very good and Krumbz appears to be a cat to look out for.

Sickest Underground Album I Heard In a Minute!
Reviewer: Sammy Lingo
This has got to be one of the illest underground CDs I've heard in a long time. If you like Demigodz, Immortal Technique, or Atmosphere then you'll defenatly like this CD. The production on it is beyond nice and he rides the beat sickly. I highly recommend this album to anyone who loves Hip-Hop and likes real talk without boundaries.

Underground's Sensational Superstar
Reviewer: R-iZZy
I must say Derty Jersey has many artists to be proud of: from Joe Budden to Grafh, and now... Krumbz! Kontentz Under Pressure brought back to us some real hip-hop, with great production work in every track. It is hard to say which track shines the most, because each track is filled with creativity, lyrical genius, and not to mention punchlines and metaphors that can open anyone's eyes. The underground circuit just might have opened the door to its new representative!

What Else Can I Say?
Reviewer: Gluttony
First song I heard from this was ABeeCee'z and that was just crazy. Great C.D. can't wait for the new one.

Reviewer: kaos
Cd is sick.they said keep it short, so ill try. krumbz murders the alphabet w/ a Bee Cee'z, spittin 2 bars per letter, every word startin w/ that letter. 114 barz, punches galore, canibus (100 bars) eat ur heart out. the sickness, is just as it's titled, sick. sour milk & bitchez are a man w/ woman problems' anthem, we've all been there. too high to continue. the cd as a whole is VERY good, flow, delivery, LYRICS. keep up the good work. waitin on the next one.

Underground Hip Hop at it's finest
Reviewer: Duce
I think the first song I heard from Krumbz was ABeeCee'z, as far as first impressions go, this song blew me away. The overall lyricism on this album rivals that of any mainstream hip hop album that has been released in the past few years. Each song brings something to the table, and in a powerful way. From 114 Barz, an amazing display of lyrical talent; to One Life, which gives us a short glimpse into the life of Krumbz. Kontentz Under Pressure is a great album, and should be heard by all true hip hop lovers. Krumbz is a display of the raw talent that is just floating around waiting to be signed. You are living proof that all emcees weren't created equal. Respect.

This is one of the truest hip hop albums I've heard from anyone in a while. Excellent production, cue labs did they thing correct. Krumbz put the lyrics out, straight fire if you ask me. AbC's one of the more difficult sounding tracks was well thought out. No Gimmicks was my favorite track no doubt about it. This is a must cop for all the true hip hop heads.

simply amazing
Reviewer: mighest
When I first listen to a CD, the whole ritual goes: put the cd in the player, start listening, and if I don't feel a track in the first 10 seconds... I skip to the next one. I must say that only TWICE in my life has happened that I don't skip one single song... and only ONCE it has happened with a hip hop album, this album was Kontentz Under Pressure... The album is completely professional, the beats are great, the lyrics are amazing, the flow is smooth and develops into a deeper thing as the songs go by and it's impossible to tell that this is a Debut album... Buy the album now, in a couple of years it'll be a collectors item

This cd is pretty cool. There are moments where I cant help but laugh at loud (even though I know I shouldn't). Really cool. My only problem is the Krumbz flow can get stale by the end of the album, as his style never alternates very much.

This is probably the best album I have heard sence Gangstarr's "Moment of Truth" album... Honestly, the beats are crazy, the lyrics are crazy, the whole album very original. ABC's and Motion Pictures were unbelievable. This guy can do it all, battle rap, club joints, personal experiences... It's got it all. The only thing I think you could improve on (Krumbz) is your timing and try not to emphasize on your r's in certain words, sometimes it makes you sound country. Other than that your the best lyricist I've heard sence Canibus. WARNING: DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS ALBUM THIS SHIT IS SERIOUSLY FIRE!

Bio

This six foot something monster, Krumbz, hails from New Jersey... the breeding ground for many, many dope MC's. The main thing about Krumbz and what really makes him stand out among the thousands of other MC's... is that his style is very unique. He is coming from a completely new angle and is versatile enough... to not only write the "hardest" punchlines... and the most "creative" concepts but to pen the most "catchy" songs. He combines the intricate bar structure of Canibus, the simple yet witty punchlines of Lloyd Banks, the sickness of Necro, the flow of Kool G Rap, the humor of Redman and the charisma of Nas. A rare combination indeed...but outlandish? Not at all. One listen and you can see why he is considered by many to be "the future of Hip Hop music".
Krumbz released his debut album "Kontentz Under Pressure" to an overwhelming amount of praise. Just due for a kid who spent half his paycheck every week on studio time alone. Furthermore before his first album ever saw the light of day... he pressed up over 1,000 two song samplers by himself and handed them out for free in 3 different States. All to promote his upcoming release. When K.U.P. finally did drop... Krumbz eventually pushed an initial 1,200 units by himself... with no vehicle... out of his back pack. When he had reached enough locally he contemplated other routes to take as far as promoting his music and attempted to get his name in the mouths of the Music Industry insiders. He decided to not only release his entire album on the Internet for free but to use it as his "vehicle" to promote and market his material. To make a long story short it worked like a charm... and he now has an estimated fanbase of around 10,000. And that is only the beginning.
Through rigorous promotion and establishing his "name", Krumbz has landed himself on numerous "big name" mixtapes as well as compilations that span the entire world. Currently he plans on releasing his second album in 2006 and is working hard on his first mixtape, due also this year.

Stay tuned folks... the future is coming. Real talk.
