His musical career began as a teenager playing guitar and bass in the Proviso East High School jazz band as well as classical, electric guitar, timpani and double bass with the school's orchestra. In his senior year, he was awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. After high school he played in a variety of local Funk and Rock bands while attending Columbia College. After after college he was hired as guitarist for the Cotton Club house band in Chicago. A year later they gave him a spot for his first Jazz trio, The Kenn Smith Unit. His group open and backed national or international acts that performed there. While at the Cotton Club he started his career as a session and touring guitarist and bassist playing styles ranging from
Be-Bop to Progressive Rock.
Kenn has performed with many great artists such as: Tower of Power, Stanley Turrentine, Stanley Jordan, Wynton Marsalis, members of the Miles Davis Band, R Kelly, Najee, Bernie Mac and many more...... His music and impeccable technique are consistently described as a "soulful, organic experience". He has written and performed in various styles, with musical influences ranging from Classical to Jazz, Funk to Progressive Rock and World Music. He has released two guitar disc "BLUE" and "TWO" and a solo bass CD titled "Short Stories"
