"K.tothe.A.Y. Releases Knowing After Yesterday"

East Coast artist K.tothe.A.Y. releases his new project titled Knowing After Yesterday, a 13 track EP that includes one feature by Kay'Dee. Originally from Brooklyn, NY K.tothe.A.Y. never had the urge to sound like everyone else, he made it a mission not to box his music into one specific genre. His new project is a testament to that. - Ms. Dynasty

"K.tothe.A.Y., "Knowing After Yesterday""

An interesting name doesn't always imply interesting music. Fortunately for K.tothe.A.Y., it does. K.tothe.A.Y. is one of the best hip-hop artists of the day. After dropping his E.P. "Knowing After Yesterday," I wouldn't be surprised if he is fast-tracked to the top.

The E.P. is loaded with great material, and different producers for nearly every track. This contributes to some great diversity on the album while also maintaining a laid-back feel that makes K.tothe.A.Y. accessible even amongst the alternative R & B scene.

Standouts on the E.P. include "Time (Right Now)" and "Brooklynites." Incorporating elements of Outkast and will.i.am., "Brooklynites" sounds like a hit to me. - The Music Farmer

"K.tothe.A.Y. – “Knowing After Yesterday” (EP)"

K.tothe.A.Y. is an eclectic East Coast artist whose sound embraces a wide range of elements, from the tight edge of Hip-Hop, to the smooth grooves of RnB and the vibes of reggae / dub. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, it’s easy to see that K.tothe.A.Y. refuses to get stuck in a box when it comes to the possibilities of his song-writing. Producer you can expect to hear on the Ep include Mike Zombie, IamMadManBeats, Justin McNell, Clams Casino, DVN, Tev 95, SuperStar O, KayBeats, J-Wiz, ObrianBeats, as well as Alter Ego. Pretty much a different producer suite K.tothe.A.Y. no genre sound. - All Unsigned

"Potholes Submissions Roulette (Vol. 1)"

Sometimes in the giant heap of trash that is the submission section of music sites, an individual with signs of talent stands out from the rest. In this case, Brooklyn-born artist K.A.Y. provides us with a solid offering in “Garland’s Grove”. Much of the appeal stems from an ambient, string-based backdrop created by an unnamed producer, but K.A.Y. holds his own.

The bars, though strained at times, are relatively impressive and mesh well with the beat: “Floating through the clouds of my conscious / Everything is pure”. However, the listening experience is actually most enjoyable when the rapper strays into singing territory. The melodies are not flawless by any measure, but they emit an undeniable charisma and authenticity. I find myself rewinding the record (moving my cursor on Soundcloud) and replaying those segments in particular.

Just a little tip for all artists submitting music: it never hurts to spell all of the words in your bio correctly. While I feel mildly incredulous about the 10,000-plus downloads K.A.Y. has garnered for his project on DatPiff with less than 20 Soundcloud followers, this track is worth checking out. You can stream “Garland’s Grove” below. - Alex Siber

"K.A.Y. – “Garland’s Grove” A Warm and Mesmerising Style"

Underground artist K.A.Y. recently dropped his latest single entitled “Garland’s Grove” from his upcoming project “Knowing After Yesterday”. The beat is effortlessly funky, jazzy, and soulful. It has a warm, mesmerising style that perfectly suits K.A.Y.’s dynamic rhymes. The production is reminiscent of The Roots, but it is much more mellow and organic.

K.A.Y. is an artist from out of the east coast, originally from Brooklyn, New York. He showcases his talents in hip hop, r&b, pop, and reggae. This gives him a vast array of choices in the music he wants to create. He is never one to be constrained by one style of music, and his influences span through a diversity of artists.

Like much of K.A.Y.s music, this is one of those songs that just slides through the cracks between genres. It’s also the quintessential hip hop single, as it takes hip hop to new places, it makes the whole more than what it was. Few singles accomplish that, stepping-up-the-game-for-all-involved and raising the collective ante.

The track is dense as hell, sticky-thick, odd effects, abyssinian-deep funkee samples, and beats the likes of which I have never heard before, plus sick rhymes that stick in your head eternally. Anyone who listens to this single will agree.

Just hearing the balance of soul, jazz and hip hop along with the voice of singer- emcee K.A.Y. is simply aural bliss. “Garland’s Grove” is perfect for many situations: Going on a road trip? Put it on, adjust the bass, sit back and let the song be part of the soundtrack of your journey. Having a cocktail party? Play it on your home stereo for perfect ambiance music. Of course to truly appreciate it, break out your headphones at midnight and prepare for a smooth-textured, multilayer, head bobbing song.

Remember when hip hop was good back in the days of Tribe, Nas, Roots, and all the other great albums that came out during that time? K.A.Y.s music takes you back to that. Hopefully K.AY. will not be slept on. In a sea of mediocrity and straight up bad, violence glorifying crap-hop, this dude stands out and lights the way for a promising, peaceful beat-loving generation. Hip hop has so much potential, and in very few places, to my knowledge, has that potential been so fully realized as what K.A.Y. is doing here.

It’s a good change from the other stuff that’s out nowadays. So I look forward to hearing some of K.A.Y.s new projects when it comes out. - JEENA JOHNSON

"K.tothe.A.Y. is an eclectic East Coast artist"

When it comes to hip-hop and RnB, the music scene is absolutely saturated. Music magazines and record labels literally have to dig, every hour, between countless demo and promo emails, to find something truly unique and remarkable. In this day and age, anyone could just get any DAW software (digital audio workstation, an entire recording studio in your laptop) and virtually produce a great sounding backing track, or even a solid vocal performance from the comfort of their bedroom or garage. Some argue that recording technology has been “democratized”, and in a sense, it is true. This is a highly competitive industry and it takes real talent and focus to climb the ranks. - Carryon Harry

Some argue that recording technology has been “democratized”, and in a sense, it is true. So many artists have the possibility to create and express themselves at only a fraction of the cost they would have needed to spend just about a decade ago or so. This is great, but like any revolution, it has its downsides. More recordings do not necessarily mean more quality, more care, and more talent. The truth, in most cases, is that unfortunately the majority of the new tracks that are produced this way are just “obstacles”, keeping media and labels away from true gems.

Luckily, every once in a while, some of these gems manage to find a place under the spotlight, and this is definitely K.tothe.A.Y.’s situation.
