"Kuhrye-oo - Old Son"

If I were to show you a picture of the man behind Kuhrye-oo, you might not recognize him. If I were then to show you a picture of the same man dressed in a tutu, lights draped about him and covered in sweat, you would instantly recall him as one of the dancing mystics of GOBBLE GOBBLE.

Calvin McElroy has been working on his own side project after returning to his Canadian home after the infamous INFINITOUR. He has two songs available for download on his tumblr, but this one above is his newest. It plays as some sort of dark soundtrack to your night drives; smooth and collected. A real ‘four-on-the-floor diddy’ as Calvin calls it.

Be on the look out for some exciting stuff coming from Kuhrye-oo. - smokeDONTsmoke

"Kuhrye-oo - Not Feeling The Love (R Kelly Cover)"

R. Kelly is the man, there is no denying that. But what happens when Canadian producer Kuhrye-oo gets behind the boards to remix one of Kells’ classic tracks, “Not Feeling The Love”? Greatness, that is what. The producer hit this one out of the park with some killer chord progressions and vocal chopping. I know very little about Kuhrye-oo at this point, but this soulful jam has my attention. Check it out and let us know what you think. - Potholes In My Blog

"Soul Handsome"

Gobble Gobble‘s Calvin McElroy aka Kuhrye-oo sent over this brand new track this morning, and Soul Handsome is yet another sample-heavy, both upbeat and smooth floor filler that once again proves that this whole Edmonton, Alberta bunch effortlessly turns everything into electronic gold at the moment (you know, see here). - No Fear of Pop

"Fresh Track - Kunrye-oo - Old Son"

The men associated with Gobble Gobble can do no wrong, clearly. Just last night I posted that so very ill remix from Mr. Cecil Frena himself on the Mane Man cut “Skin Fox”, and now today, I find it pertinent to start it on a high note with a fresh track entitled “Old Son” from the already introduced Kuhrye-oo. “Old Son” is a masterfully sequenced, beat-frenzied club banger that I’m certain will sneakily make its way into your heavy rotation; It’s positively addictive.
Throughout the blazers nearly six-minute voyage, “Old Son” weaves its way in and out of the mind, reaching the far depths of the brain that typically remain rested. It undergoes many transitions, culminating into an undeniably epic breakdown. Be wise and keep an eye on this dude. I have a feeling 2011 will be a colorful year for him. - Neon Musical Insite

"Kuhrye-oo - Not Feeling The Love (R Kelly Cover)"

This smooth slice of R&B comes from Canada’s Kuhrye-oo, an up and coming producer with an amazing set of skills up his sleeve. Combining a warm rhodes chord progression with a rolling beat and a buttery bass line. He spreads R. Kelly’s godly vocals over the top, which occasionally gets creepily reversed. Keep your ears out for the theme of Twin Peaks which sneaks in towards the end as if it was meant to be there. This track happens to come off a blog curated Valentines mix, which you can download here. - Life Aquatic

"Kuhrye-oo - Manet Monet"

Kuhrye-oo is so good it really doesn’t need very much by way of qualification, but I suppose I’m comfortable saying that it’s the solo project of Calvin McElroy, one Cecil Frena’s magnificent retainers in Gobble Gobble. His debut track, Manet Monet (named for post-Impressionist French painter Édouard Manet and foundational (not-post) Impressionist French painter Claude Monet) is a gorgeous build towards an equally beautiful break down, slowly dilating in blissful ambivalence, collapsing in a sequence of new, speedier beats and chopped samples. It’s not a debut album, and not really even a debut single, but it’s certainly one of the strongest first tracks I’ve heard this winter. - Land Magazine

"Beatmakers: Kuhrye-oo"

One of the four ludicrous sticks beating away in electric-wave-house act Gobble Gobble is Calvin McElroy. His solo project, Kuhrye-oo, has released a new song "Old Son", which you can hear below.

Kuhrye-oo is a departure from the party-frenzy tone set by Gobble Gobble. "Old Son" is more subdued, working itself through the digital ether. A project still in its infancy, the output so far has been a highly sequenced of samples, blending together to make music best used as the soundtrack to your day as you do something productive. This is experience-music.

If you want something new to fill your ears during the business, find Kuhrye-oo here on Facebook and at the official site. Jump on now. A lot of great music is sure to follow. - In Your Speakers

"Kuhrye-oo - Soul Handsome"

I’ve never been the most attractive man in the room. In fact I am rarely even considered to be one of the more decent looking guys if there are ten or so around. I’m too thin and short normally looking like a pale prison escapee. My hair is thinning and my teeth could definitely use some work. My body is a mess of knobby joints that seem to collide at strange angles and I have a funny Texan accent that makes me feel like a dumb hick when I hear it back. Even with all of these problems somehow your eyes met mine from the end of the hallway. You stared as if you were looking through me and smiled so large that I knew that even with this broken frame that I could still be soul handsome.

The latest release from Colin McElroy better known as Kuhrye-oo arrived in my box this morning and I’ve had time to give it some listens. The single is called Soul Handsome and begins with heavy machine sounding percussion that soon slides into a rising intro to the songs melodic central theme. There is always a surprise throughout the track lingering in the background just waiting to sneak its way into your headphones. He has found the perfect mixture of tough sounding stuttered beats and beautiful electronics that contain emotional vocal portions that are allowed to ring out at just the right moments. You can both stream or download his latest work through his Soundcloud now and don’t miss out on his R. Kelly cover that was recently featured on the We Fall Apart Valentines Day mixtape from Unholy Rhythms and Cactus Mouth. - Good Pop Bad Pop

"Kuhrye-oo - Old Son"

I was resting that afternoon when I saw his long older model Cadillac edge its way over the hill. My glass of tea sat beside me and my forehead was sweating from the summer heat. That big red boat sailed on into the driveway and out came those faded brown shoes. It had been many years since I saw him and his face was starting to look like mine. It was wrinkled and had the appearance of leather. It was a face that showed off his many years of hard work while following in my footsteps. I picked up my cane and made my way down the wooden stairs of that ancient porch to meet him with a tight embrace. I had honestly never missed anything as much as my old son.

Edmonton Alberta Canada has been very good to the musical world in the past couple of years and this is another notch on that belt. Calvin McElroy who is also a live member of GOBBLE GOBBLE recently emailed me with news about his new solo efforts under the name of Kuhrye-oo and while like GOBBLE GOBBLE he does make electronic based music you shouldn’t go into this release thinking you are getting a taste of their total madness. This is laid back smokey vibed music with an almost ambient worldly feel using ethnic percussion and a driving 4×4 bass drum beat to power those graceful synth lines. He also has another single posted up along with Old Son on his Tumblr titled Manet Monet with a similar ear enchanting style over a stuttered almost Hip-Hop flavored breakbeat for you to hear and you can find both up for free download there. After hearing these two tracks I can’t wait to get more news about an EP or possible full length in the near future. Here is a taste of Old Son to tempt you to get over to his Tumblr to hear more.

"Kuhrye-oo"

I was pretty bummed out when Star Slinger announced he wouldn’t be opening for Gobble Gobble and Baths for some of the US tour but this weekend Kuhrye-oo made up for it. Here is a video of Soul Handsome that I took using the 8mm app. Right after Calvin did his set he made a quick costume change, which included metal stilts, and got crazy with Gobble Gobble. We were very lucky to have such great bands in Little Rock this weekend. - Epic Concoction

"Too Fresh: Kuhrye-oo"

I just learned about Kuhrye-oo this afternoon via email, and I was so pleasantly surprised that here I am telling you about him. He’s a Canadian artist who crafts densely layered tapestries of sound that inspire as much wonder as they do dancing. From beginning to end, these two tracks (the only two he’s released so far) are completely unpredictable. All I know is that I just heard these and already can’t get them out of my head, which is a good sign. Can’t wait for more to come. - Dipped In Dollars

"Kuhrye-oo - Soul Handsome"

Kuhrye-oo (Calvin of GOBBLE GOBBLE) gave us word of this fresh track yesterday, and it’s been on endless loop since. Landing at the opposite end of the spectrum as GBL’s manic electro-pop, “Soul Handsome” is beautifully reserved. Drums skitter, synths chatter, and distant vocals echo in the ether- rainy day perfection. - Boy Attractions

"Mp3 of the Day"

"Great track by Canadia artist Kuhrye-oo. It's like, a cool(er) version of Moby." - Subbacultcha

"Kuhrye-oo - Soul Handsome"

Out of a concaved womb, we crawled. Afterbirth tattooed our milky, white bodies with a gossamer ink. Cooing and cawing, we groped for our footing as we wiped the blood-stained film from our eyes. Sinewy seduction, strained evocation, we struggled to stand on our own feet, stretching out to one another in the process. Backs cracking, our legs shook violently as we elongated ourselves into gore-clothed giants. The whites of our eyes, a contrast from our red skins, shone brilliantly as we popped our bones into place. How the sounds would echo - our spines exploding in upright jubilation. Unrestrained celebration. Vehement visitation upon this bloodthirsty birthing.

I have a complete love-love relationship with Kuhrye-oo’s work. After delivering a fantastic track to the UR/CM VDAY mix, he conjures up a new tune in what is turning out to be a fantastic body of work. “Soul Handsome”, is a cracking, undulating track full of glittering splendor. It pulsates and glistens like a prismic reflection on water - weaving and shining with illustrious awareness. There is a fine crispness, a pulse, a richness beyond the blips and hand claps. Sparkling soul-glitch. - Unholy Rhythms

"Kuhrye-oo"

"Very pleasant tones in this spacey lounge track, first track of side project of Calvin, member of Gobble Gobble." - Don't Die Wondering

"Manet Monet"

This past September I had the awesome pleasure of touring for ten days with GOBBLE GOBBLE. During this time Edmonton's Calvin McElroy, one of GBL's live members, showed me an unfinished solo jam he was working on under the moniker Kuhrye-oo. At the time I was blown away, and have since been practically dying to hear the finished product. Now I am glad to finally have the track in it's finished glory to share. As a gesture of fair warning, somewhere just before the 3-minute mark the entrancing track explodes into an all out danceathon. - Get Off The Coast

Bio

You could have seen Canadian-born Kuhrye-oo anywhere. He’s been touring the world for the past four years, originally with Gobble Gobble, then their evolution Born Gold — more recently as Grimes’ backing band. As UNO’s new roster artist, Kuhrye-oo’s debuting his solo EP. The self-titled 12? has an unusual patience paired with exciting high-time, making for some of the Garagiest, swirling sounds we’ve heard.
Between butt-shaking bass and crooning samples, Kuhrye-oo lives somewhere amidst Jacques Greene’s emotive tracks and downright dirty juke spanning four tracks.
