"KunK "We're Not Who You Think We Are""

‘Come and fly with us, we will take you for a ride’ demand ‘Kunk’ at the beginning of their latest single, and if you are a fan of shouty, discordant grunge, how could you refuse? The erratic verse and melodic chorus of ‘We’re Not Who You Think We Are’ sound like they belong to two completely different songs, they borrow Kim Deal’s backing vocals from ‘Tame’ and it all adds up to the sound of a band having a lot of fun.

Elsewhere, the sludgy ‘Public Image Ltd’ has a bitchy sarcasm which is more reminiscent of ‘Johnny Rotten’ than ‘John Lydon’, and with the loud-quiet-loud dynamic of ‘Little People’, the obvious influence of ‘The Pixies’ is again apparent.

Could 2008 be the year that ‘Kunk’ broke? - AU Magazine

"KunK - We're Not Who You Think We Are"

More Norwich from KunK, who I think might have been played on my dad’s programme at some stage with a different line-up. I’ve got a copy of a version of ‘Public Image Ltd’, the third one on here, on a CD somewhere too, but I can’t find it. Those bitchy sarcastic lyrics are funny though.

I’m a bit biased about KunK actually, but that aside, you’ll find three terrific, uncomplicated, noisy guitar tunes on their page. ‘We’re Not Who You Think We Are’ is clearly influenced, like they say, by the Pixies, and not so much by the Queens of the Stone Age who they also like. Which is probably for the best. - William Ravenscroft - Unpredictable Porridge

"KunK "We're Not Who You Think We Are" - Single of the Week"

They’re from Norwich, I maybe wrong but I think this is their debut. Impressive release, three edgy alternative slightly angular and rather infectious indie guitar tracks that bite.

Lead track is the most impressive of three fine tracks, stands out with that stop-start edgy thrust and clever word-play and the way they deal with this as they travel at the speed of surround star. It is their debut, rhythmical aggression and Pixie bite. Fine first shot. - Organ Magazine

"KunK "We're Not Who You Think We Are""

Rated 10 out of 13
"Taking You From The Mosh Pit To The Dance Floor"

With an unflinching assault of jerky guitars stabbing energetically from the off, KunK’s debut single, ‘We’re Not Who You Think We Are’ is a dose perfectly unpolished alternative rock to sink your teeth into. Brining a two pronged attack of duel vocals to rip and roar their way into your life, ‘We’re Not Who You Think We Are’ does not hesitate in slapping you in the face by way of hello before ripping you by the throat and thrusting you simultaneously into the mosh pit via the dance floor.

Following on with more of a punk styling, ‘Public Image Ltd’ hits you with a wall of unpolished anger fed vocals that waste no time in pointing out all the wrongs of culture today backed with by an incessant ration of angular guitars and beefed up drum beats to truly drive the meaning home before ‘Little People’ struts in with the intent of making you dance uncontrollably simply through the power of a sultry bass line wrapped around infectious guitar riffs to tempt all into a bout of toe tapping and whilst neither track live up to the ferocious in-your-face quality of ‘We’re Not Who You Think We Are’, KunK still have the ability to excite.

Mixing attitude with adrenaline and bringing just the right amount of aggressive rawness to tempt all, KunK are a band with much to offer and whether its their seductively raw riffs that whip you into a frenzy or their energetically fiery vocals, this is a band to keep a very watchful eye on. - Room Thirteen

"KunK - Public Image Ltd"

Public Image Ltd. (Independent Label) is a song I found very fitting at this point of time. The band Kunk is a four piece grunge/garage/indie band from Norwich, United Kingdom that are the talented musicians behind this song. This song Public Image Ltd. is from the single "Where Not Who You Think We Are" which is to be released on May 12th this year.

The song Public Image Ltd. opens with that punk attitude english accent, vocalizing "I really like your skinhead" followed with grunge guitar riffs and a cool layback drumbeat. A quirky guitar riff introduces the chorus which has solid drumming and melodic grunt vocals "Public Image I will mimic and I will imitate it". The song grinds out heavier as it plays out with some brilliant lyrics "I’m gonna get me some attention, I’m gonna worship the devil". The music really captures the feel of this song and is reflective of the lyrics "Read to me from your satanic bible, and let me pull up a chair".

The second verse mentions a very special Canadian punk band that unintentionally became a stereotype amongst the male youth of this decade. "I am gonna get me a skateboard, I feel like Sum 41, And get myself a spiky haircut, cause there so punk" (I have messaged them, hoping they will provide us with their thoughts on this verse however they are on tour at the moment!)

The lyrics of this song are not just amusing but raise the interesting point of stereotypes in different alternative scenes that have the catch cry of "Be yourself!" In this decade we have seen the introduction of words such as poser, faker and wannabe, used as insults if someone is not dressed accordingly or is behaving in an inappropriate manner for that particular scene. "I really like your make up, and your jet black hair." The fact that these scenes have had a set of rules placed in them in this decade has been quite disturbing and sad, and in my opinion has left certain scenes quite stagnant. Anyway we have seen many stereotypes in the alternative scenes this decade and this song Public Image Ltd. reminds us of that and really highlights how stupid it is. This song Public Image Ltd. doesn’t just fucking rock but deserves to be an anthem for the next decade.

Kunk’s influences, Nirvana/SonicYouth/Pixies are respectfully heard in their music and are blended successfully with their own sound. All tracks on the "Where Not Who You Think We Are" single are simply brilliant. I highly recommend that after you finish reading this to definitely click on the link below and really check this band out! Kunk is definitely a band with a huge future and that makes me a very happy camper!

Oh and to that 14 year old at the AFI gig a couple of years ago just because I am blonde doesn’t mean I can’t catch a "goth" gig once in a while!!! And did you know the drummer Adam gave me one of his drumsticks and I didn’t even ask him! SO THERE!!! - "Your looking, so fucking cool, oh man, I wish I was you."

Anyone else ready for the next decade??? - Music FanzBiz

Bio

Having been compared to whatever noise it is that angry dinosaurs make, Norwich Alt-Rock band KunK make sounds that have been known to stop wild boar in their quest for flesh. Creating a sound that is "somewhere between the demented growl of Mclusky & the early Britrock might of 3 Colours Red" (Subba-Cultcha.com), KunK put on an energetic live show that excites, tantalises and scares the crowd in equal measure. They have also shared the stage with the likes of The Subways, The Airborne Toxic Event, Nine Black Alps, Baddies, and appeared on the XFM Indie Night of the 2008 City Showcase Festival in London.

Two years after a much needed line-up change, KunK released their debut single “We’re Not Who You Think We Are” in May 2008. The single quickly picked up play on Kerrang! Radio, BBC Radio 1, Resonance FM and XFM, with influential DJ John Kennedy calling it “one of the finest releases of the year!”. News of KunK hit the shores of the United States shortly after with huge early radio reaction from the likes of WNYE New York, NY, KDLD-Los Angeles, CA, WKQX Chicago, IL, WXPN Philadelphia, PA, WFNX Boston, MA, KEXP Seattle, WA. This resulted in some of the bands tracks being used in MTV shows, The Real World, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and Bad Girls Club.
KunK recently headed back into the studio, determined to capture their raw edge and live energy on record. The result, a double A-side single ‘No Way/Game Over’ is due for release in October ’09 with a full album to follow in 2010.
