"Interview with Kyle Crow"

www.thescenezine.org/ Interview with Kyle Crow 2/20/2012
Tell us about your music and what inspires you as an artist?
I love all kinds of music. I love everything from folk to death metal. I think that the more artists you listen to, the better the artist you become. I like writing heavy songs, and I also like writing deep songs with a lot of emotional content. I definitely do not like the idea of being stuck in one specific genre or sound, but that’s how things tend to work these days. As far as genres go, I fit into the genre of Rock/Hard Rock. I love hearing new songs that I can connect with. I like when artists aren’t afraid to come out and say what they are talking about. It takes a lot to be vulnerable and real to your listeners, and that’s what inspires me. That realness has helped me in finding courage to write about the personal struggles I’ve gone through including my sobriety, addiction and depression. What have you learned from playing for so long? Everyone in the music industry says that persistence is the key… This is so true!!! This is one of the toughest businesses to survive in. I’ve been playing shows since I was 14 years old, and I am now 25. There have been a lot of ups and downs, but I am so thankful that I never gave up. I’m sure I will continue to face different challenges in my career, but I know that this is what I’m supposed to do with my life. People have to learn to believe in themselves even when others don’t.
What do you like about the Oklahoma scene, or dislike?
I absolutely love Oklahoma. This has been my home for more than 20 years. It will always be my home. I think the music scene is definitely growing rapidly, and that excites me every day. I only wish Oklahoma had more industry people (managers, booking agents). There is much less competition between bands here than there seems to be in Austin, Nashville or Los Angeles. In some ways, that is wonderful, but I feel like we could benefit from some of the A&R reps those scenes have to offer. I sometimes need more help with the industry side of things.
What do you have coming up?
I have been extremely busy lately, which has been wonderful. Between taking 12 credit hours at ACM as a vocal student, rehearsing with my school band, rehearsing with the Kyle Crow line up, booking shows, finishing and releasing an album and ordering and selling merch, things have been insane!! I’m very thankful for all great things happening lately. I just got back from playing a show in Winter Park, Colorado which was amazing. I am playing for the live video shoot and interview UCO Soundcheck on Friday, February 17. I am also performing at the ‘HomaGrown Showcase put together by the brilliant Cami Stinson on February 29. My CD release show (biggest show yet) featuring ACM bands Hydrogen and Chateau is on March 10. I am also playing the ACM Live Link concert series on March 30. That’s the schedule as of right now. New opportunities arise every day so who knows what else is on the agenda for the near future.
What would you like to accomplish with your new album?
I am hoping to promote the album by playing around a lot locally and regionally. I love being on the road and I am excited to tour!! My ultimate goal is to be signed with a major label, so I need to do as much as I can independently before the majors come into play. The Kyle Crow EP is now available for purchase on iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon and Spotify. All of my merch, tour dates and info can be found on www.kylecrow.com. I am on Facebook, Youtube and Reverb Nation as well. Where did you record the new album? I recorded the new album with my producer and great friend, Cameron Conyer from Binary Blueprint Productions. The tracking/mixing/editing was completed at Artisan Sound Studios in Oklahoma City. I had a wonderful time making the album. I was able to play drums, acoustic guitars, keys and sing vocals. There is some amazing electric guitar work on the record from Cameron Conyer, Ryan Tull and Tyler Huston. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. We spent 11 months total on the 6 track EP. It was mastered by the legendary Logan Mader out of Beverly Hills (guitarist for Machinehead and Soulfly, mixing and editing for Five Finger Death Punch) — 1 day ago #oklahoma #kyle crow - www.thescenezine.org
