"LYRICIST PETER SHOWS HE'S MADE OF THE WRITE STUFF"

A Bradford on Avon songwriter reached the final of a talent contest with his song Country Life.

Peter Arrowsmith, who has been writing lyrics since his early teens, entered four of his songs in the UK Songwriting Contest having reached the semi-finals last year.

The 46-year-old said he was excited to have got so far, seeing three more of his songs making this year's semi-final.

Only three per cent of the 6,200 people who entered the competition got through to the final.

Peter said: "Although I didn't win, I came two points away from winning, which is brilliant.

"I just do it because I enjoy it. I love sitting down and listening to music and it always gives me a bit of inspiration."

Peter, who owns The New Inn at Westwood, said he found songwriting a good way to relax after a day at work.

He said: "When you work all day at the pub it is a great feeling to sit down with the guitar when you get home and write lyrics. It is a very personal thing.

"I have always loved playing music and have always done it alongside my other jobs."

Peter, who also plays in a band called Labour in Vain, said his musical influence was American singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan.

He pens songs in a variety of genres, including country, jazz and blues. - Bath Chronicle

Bio

I have been writing songs and playing solo for years. I created Labour in Vain in 1997 and played with some guys back then in London. Gigs included Upstairs at Ronnie Fcotts, The Mean Fiddler and The Queens Head in Islington. I moved to the west country in 2001 and have contined to write and play. I have entered the UK Song-writers competition for the past 2 years. In 2007 I was a semi-finalist with 1 song, whilst 3 others were highly commended. In 2008 I am a finalist in the Country section with "Country Life" and a semi-finalist in the Adult Contemporary category with a further 3 songs. Seb and I hooked up in the summer of 2007 and we have been playing together as Labour in Vain since November 2007. Playing all original material we gig locally whenever we can. It's been busy playing around the traps including a gig at Glastonbury this year.
