"Bonded by The Music"

It could be about family values, but Lab Rat has instead simply put its penchant for writing catchy melodies to good use ... and won a competition in the process.

GAINING recognition for your passion as an individual is one thing, but getting it with your family is a different prospect entirely. You could ask the Jackson 5 or the Osmonds, but better yet, just ask Lab Rat, the national final winner of the recent Jack Daniels-fuelled Global Battle of the Bands competition, which saw the quintet walk away RM50,000 richer.

Although Lab Rat – which got its name from Syarul’s music studio and its musical nature for experimentation – has been jamming for close to three years now, it never placed a time scale on itself to release an album or play publicly. In fact, its winning performance (Nov 13th 2008) was the band’s second ever in front of an audience, the first coming from an early round a few months ago( in September).

Lab Rat may not be reaching for its shades just yet but the road ahead certainly looks rosy with this GBOB victory.

The world is Lab Rat’s oyster and if the band can continue on its fine run of drawing audiences into its brand of care-free pop rock, something special awaits this Malaysian quintet. Here’s wishing the band a hearty “Malaysia Boleh!” - The Star, Malaysia (Nov 21st 2008)

Bio

Band members Shahirah and Syarul met at the studio (Lab Rat Jam Studios, Section 13 Shah Alam) in 2004 where Syarul was working at the time and later bought over the studio for them to manage themselves. Syarul, frontman of another heavy rock band, needed an outlet for his more light and carefree type of music as, and so banded together with two of his other brothers – Syaril and Acik, his fiancé Shahirah, and long-time studio hand Kecik to form alternative-folkish-pop band Lab Rat. The music that came from this union? Carefree and full of life, maybe, but we’ll just let you listen and enjoy for yourself now, won’t we?
