Sound Full of Energy

The LA Brownies’ sound takes you everywhere from a mood of “Don’t Tread on Me,” all the way to sublime, atmospheric, rhythmic and somehow existential, melodic musings. With a love of all music in mind, this is an aural experience that satisfies your deepest soul.

The distinctive sound of the band is catalyzed by the mixture of different styles of music that they are all influenced by, such as funk, blues, rock, hip-hop, punk, grunge and even more technically sophisticated and complex genres like jazz and metal. The resulting music is full of dynamic sounds ranging from clean guitars, wah-pedal infused solos, funky bass lines, and seventies-flavored drums; all the way to distorted guitars, ambient effects, super rhythmic bass chords, and huge drum rolls.

All of these tonal qualities form a broad base of musical accompaniment upon which diverse vocals full of rap, soul and rock elements are laid down. The Brownies’ unique sound sends a motivational, socially attentive, and contemplative message via their songs, which are conceptually augmented in their thoughtful and intricately planned videos.

Genres & Influences

Each band member has diverse musical heroes: Katukota cites James Brown, Marvin Gaye, and Freddie Mercury, in addition to a slew of MCs like Aceyalone, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, and more; Hernandez calls Jimi Hendrix his musical hero, hands down; and Delgado has an affinity for Dave Grohl and Nirvana. The diversity of the musical tastes of each band member is reflected clearly in the quality of their original music, which relies heavily on the fusion of genres. Other influences of the band include ensembles like Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, The Doors, The Police, The Roots, 311, Cream, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

The LA Brownies call themselves an “AlterNative FunkRock SoulPower Trio”. The boundaries of all genres are crossed, and what is produced is a powerful type of music and a highly diverse catalogue with songs that have the potential to please each and every listener: there is truly something for everyone. These guys have a discernible musical chemistry that allows them to excel in any genre that they take on, whether for an improvisation, a recording, or a performance. The band touts an extensive musical repertoire that covers a myriad of genres including funk, rock, metal, reggae, Jazz, and virtually any other type of performance, including improvisation in each genre.  It is music that is being created out of a sheer respect and genuine love for all music: music for music lovers made by music lovers.

The initial idea of this project was spearheaded by Krishna Katukota (bass and vocals) in 2007, shortly after the death of "The Godfather of Soul", James Brown, who the band is named after. After several changes in the members, the lineup currently consists of Daniel Hernandez (who joined in 2011 to play guitar), and Mike Delgado (who joined to play drums in 2012), along with Katukota.  The fact that this wide range of sounds is produced by an outfit consisting of only three members gives this power trio an added element of impressiveness; the breadth of their talent and the simplicity of only three members, combined with their intentions for themselves and their listeners, makes this particular power trio very pure of purpose and pleasurably entertaining.

 Intention

The story of the LA Brownies is full of substance; it is ripe with the intention held by each band member, and this sentiment is what carries through into their music and performances. While listening to the LA Brownies, you cannot quite put your finger on the precise quality that is so refreshing about the band – there is an aspect of comradery and musical kinship amongst the band members: vocalist, bandleader, and bassist, Mr. Krishna Katukota; the guitar player, Mr. Daniel Hernandez; and the drummer, Mr. Michael Delgado. This charismatic quality is what gives the music its passion, and it is also what fuels the substantial meanings behind the songs.
