"Concert Review"

The common theme throughout all of them seem to be courage, invention and wit, three qualities that La Chicana have in spades. There’s a palpable sense of warmth and connection in the room and it’s one of the most enjoyable gigs on a number of levels I’ve seen for a while.
…This is the spirit of wit, play, invention and the deep engagement with
culture that I admire…the grace, ease, outwardness and inspiring tenacity of La Chicana.
......"that the singer Dolores Sola really has star quality, enormous stage presence. She’s been blessed Dolores, not only with great beauty but a magnificent voice, with just the right edge of rasp to carry the flavour of smokey milongas. …but there's something else in Dolores´ delivery, a more knowing, impish quality …

La Chicana.

“Ayer hoy era mañana” is the name of the record by this group that doesn´t introduce itself as a classical orchestral line-up but more as a band that plays tango in an almost acoustic way with no rhythm doublings and keeping the structure of classic tango, performing and feeling it from its roots without leaving humor behind. La Chicana is formed by Dolores Solá in vocals, Acho Estol in guitar vocal and arrangements (also the author of several pieces) and Juan Valverde, flute and clarinet.

Traditional themes and updated language “Ayer hoy era mañana” The title of this cd points to the traditional and modern songs that, cleverly mixed, were selected for the recording. Made up of tangos, milongas, waltz, a chamame and a "batucada". A vigorous rhythm accompanies the voice - gifted with natural vibrato - of Dolores Solá. She knows how to give with her performance and phrasing a quaint sound to the "lowlife" songs that she attacks with panache. A thematic thread is distinguished in many of the chosen lyrics: the one in which the author flares up to the woman that left the misery of her origins to dwell in the world of easy living. We find it in “Oro y plata”, “Farandulera”, and “La Marilyn”. And from another angle in "La mina del Ford". Without forgetting the complains of the deserted woman in "Que queres con ese loro?". Acho Estol´s compositions deserve a special paragraph, he manages to combine magnificent musical rhythms with lyrics where today´s street language rehashes the traditional urban topics as well as those of other genres he visits. The rocker origin is expressed in the nostalgic "La Patota", romanticism impregnates "Una rosa y un farol" and the horror experienced is expressed in "Llamame chamame". Juan Valverde shows in his performance harmonic and melodic subtleties that are attractive to the ear. We recommend this youthful group because starting from a primitive line-up it manages a pleasing conjuction with the expressive forms of today.
BUENOS AIRES TANGO

This group is a project of guitarist-composer and arranger Acho Estol, singer Dolores Solá and flutist Juan Valverde and it seems to be a proof of the strong winds of renovation that grace tango. They cultivate a repertoire in which tradition, taken as what it was from the beggining of the century until the forties, cohabits with current afairs. And even with sonorities that seem futuristic, hence the title. Nonetheless the preferential public will be those who ask what´s new? If they wonder they already have an answer. Very tanguera. (C.P)

Tango from the nineties.Combining the old guard, tangos from the forties and their own songs, La Chicana is an interesting tango group. There are findings like La Patota (a milonga with an original "batuque" as base), a streetwise sound and a certain rock
er, parodic pulse. Acho Estol - guitar and arrengements- uncovers himself as a skillful composer.

La Chicana. “Ayer hoy era mañana”
Inscribed in the abundant offer of urban music by young musicians, La Chicana contributes from this first recording an absolutely personal approach for covering tango classics and show their own compositional vein. With a trio as a base and the "ill-bred" singing presence of Dolores Solá - who asserts herself like the traditional female voices in the genre - , the group can boast their playfulness with the rhythm and manages to raise attention.

“Ayer hoy era mañana” La Chicana.
This tango group keeps consolidating its place. In its first CD Estol reveals himself as a young talented composer and Dolores Solá entraps with a warm voice, perfect for performing tango.

La Chicana. “Ayer hoy era mañana”
This trio headed by the elegant voice of Dolores Solá makes its debut in the recording market with a more than correct work. Searching for their personality they borrow an interesting repertoire (Tinta roja, Oro y plata, El porteñito among others), besides daring to show their own compositions penned by Acho Estol.

Un Giro Extraño. La Chicana.
This group´s most recent CD delights lovers and laymen of tango alike, from a wonderful repertoire and for the artistic resources that give it a remarkable positioning in the contemporary urban sound. Dolores Solá´s sweet but at the same time bold voice shines in Acho Estol´s songs, and also in gems like "Polka de la tarjeta de cartón", by González Tuñón and music by Tata Cedrón. “Este grupo conjuga de forma brillante los ritmos tangueros con otros géneros musicales meramente folclóricos no sólo argentinos sino de otros lugares como Brasil, Uruguay o Senegal. "Review "Lejos""

“Some CDs whack you over the head and hook you in on the first listen, others take a while to wrap themselves around you. As often as not it’s the latter which cut the deepest and last the longest. That certainly seems to be the case with this fourth album by Buenos aires based six piece La Chicana, a new name to me but one I shall endeavour to find out more about… Well worth seeking out and sticking with.” - Froots magazine Jamie Renton. London 2007

"Concert Review"

“…every seat was taken. For good reason, too: while La Chicana is well known and liked in Argentina, you would probably be more likely to see them play live in London or Madrid, where they tour regularly, than you would here in Buenos Aires, where they play only a few times a year.
…they are one of the few contemporary groups to write and perform original tangos—no small feat in the highly critical and nostalgic atmosphere that surrounds the genre today—(…) their poppy mix of guitar, electric bass, violin, bandoneón, and percussion would probably go over as well if not better in international world music venues like Joe’s Pub in New York than it would in some Buenos Aires tango clubs. At the same time, they are not a world music band:, when they play tango they play tango, they just also happen to play cumbias, chacareras, fados, and Tom Waits covers. They even do a funky rendition of the first movement from J.S. Bach’s concerto for two violins, BWV 1043!
Aside from these and other instrumental acrobatics, the real star of the show was singer Dolores Solá, a woman who has more glamour in her French-manicured pinky finger than all the rest of the tango musicians in town combined.
On stage Solá comes off as larger than life, like a movie star on the screen (she in fact did appear in the recent Argentine film Ciudad en Celo (City in Heat), whose soundtrack was done by Estol). Her stage presence is backed up by her voice, which is at once powerful and delicate, both serious and playful. She brings little to none of the “grasa” tear-jerking so standard among mainstream tango singers with her to the stage, instead relying on an expressive nimbleness that can have her sounding like a seductive lover in one phrase and a scolding mother in the next, all the while keeping firmly at the helm of the party that is La Chicana’s live show.
Combined with Estol’s highly original, varied, and memorable songs, Solá and the band come across as quirky and irreverent without being ironic or distanced, rooted in the tango tradition without loosing themselves in devotion to it. It is a refreshing combination, and I am ready to wait it out for my next chance to hear them live, however long that might be.” - Tango Actual. New York. 2007

“I have been thoroughly captivated by this Argentine band that has created its own dark, expressive version of contemporary tango, with a rich European sound, traces of traditional folk from Argentina and Uruguay, a bit of flamenco, and a youthful bad attitude, and fronted by one of the great husky voices of South America, Dolores Solá” - CD Roots.

Bio

La Chicana was formed in 1996 when Dolores Sola (vocal) and Acho Estol (guitar, composer, musical director) decided to plunge into tango.

Their first album “Ayer hoy era mañana” (1997) won the Unesco Tribune Award. Its successor “Un giro extraño” (2000) was voted record of the year by argentine folklore superstar Leon Gieco. While recording and playing in Buenos Aires they took their tango on tour all around the world: Madrid, San Pablo, Senegal, Brasilia, Bilbao, Pekín, Singapur, Paris, Berlin, London, Hamburgo, Munich, Barcelona, Natal, Salvador, Roma, Shanghai, and more, working in independent concerts and world music festivals (Singapore Arts Festival, Womad Caceres, Expo Zaragoza, Expo Shanghai, La mar de Músicas (Cartagena), Veranos de la Villa (Madrid), Le fils de voix (Paris), etc.).
Their next album, “Tango agazapado” (2003) won the Carlos Gardel Award in the category “Tango new forms” and was recently distinguished by Babelia, the cultural supplement of El Pais newspaper of Spain as one of the best records in the last twenty years.
In 2004 they publish their catalogue in Europe (Galileo m-c) and intensify the touring in Germany, Spain, England and Benelux.
The next cd “Lejos” (2006) was record of the year in Efeeme magazine (Spain) and it spawned a concert DVD filmed in Teatro Ateneo de Buenos Aires.
In 2006 Dolores played a tango singer in “Ciudad en celo” feature film which won the public award in the Mar del Plata Film Festival, and “Best directing debut” in the Valladolid Film Festival. Acho composed the film music which included La Chicana playing live. The Band did concerts at both Film Festivals. Acho also published two solo albums: Mi pelicula (2007 – record of the year Efeeme magazine), and “Buenosaurios” (2009), which published in Europe reached number 13 in the World Music Chart Europe, and won a Womex Award (2011). Dolores published her own “Salto mortal”
with little known repertoire from the twenties and thirties revived with modern versions and guests like Tata Cedron and Atilio Reynoso; she has played it in Argentina and Brazil. In 2011 the band stars in the documentary “Tango not dead” along with Adriana Varela, Susana Rinaldi, Horacio Salgan, Leopoldo Federico, and other tango artists.

They are in the finishing stages or their fifth studio album.
