Bio

La Definicion is one of the new fresh faces emerging amongst the banal stagnant modern rock scene. The project of 23 year old Jairo-Jose, La Definicion hopes to give the average rock listener a dose a honest songwriting and music that lasts far beyond just a hooky riff and a catchy chorus. Although no stranger to being in bands, Jairo wanted to do something different with La Definicion after being influenced by the bands of his youth such as Latin Rock sensations Mana and classic rocker Neil Young. "La Definicion means Definition in Spanish, the music I'm making now certainly defines who I am and what grew up with." Says Jairo. "People have responded really well to my songs, they feel moved by them even though the lyrics are in another language...I put a lot of myself into these songs and I think bands need to do more of that, cut out the middleman." Growing up in East New York a rough area of Brooklyn where Hip Hop luminaries such as The Notorious B.I.G and Lil' Kim got their start, Jairo got his kicks instead from 70's rock as opposed to bass thumpin', beat heavy rap music. It's this opposition to what is accepted as popular that has allowed him to focus on the music that he wants to make. "I suppose that the band could be classified as Latin rock but it's so much more than that," Says Jairo. "People have heard traces of Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews along with traditional Latin rock like Mana and Fulano De Tal. I don't want the band to be categorized into one genre because the music certainly doesn't do that and it shows." He received some early help from Jeff Hines, guitarist from another local band called One Solid State, who introduced him to producer Mike Barile (Candiria, 40 Below Summer, E Town Concrete) of Purple Light Studios who recorded the first demos and who recently has completed work on the first album. It wasn't until he met Pianist Johnathon Castellanos soon afterwards that the music of La Definicion really started taking shape. "I felt that the songs were really strong," recalls Johnathon. Jairo and I got along really well and we were making home demos of these songs tossing ideas back and forth to each other on what to add or omit. The stuff that stuck I feel certainly made the music better and it really comes across well when we perform. Our first release is really gonna knock people off their feet. If you think you know what we sound like, wait 'till you hear the next song after that! " The fans who come and see La Definicion play already sing along with Jairo on band standards like "Ojos Verdes" and "Luz Morada". It's the connection and feedback to the fans that allows La Definicion to move forward. "The fans are great and I can really sense a great vibe when I'm singing a song on tha stage," Says Jairo. "This is why I write music, I've always liked going to a show and sensing something special when I see a band or artist perform so I hope that La Definicion can do something like that a person who has come out to see us.
