Laetus

Laetus

BandRockAlternative

Laetus has been described as the bastard child of Metallica and Sevendust, combining guitar virtuosity and detuned rhythmic grooving with rumbling bass lines, intelligible vocals, and intense drumming.

Biography

Laetus originally began in December of 2005 as a solo project Mike Jandreau (vocals/guitar) did in his spare time. Despite a large library of original tunes to draw from, it was difficult to play live without other members to fill the spots. For nearly a year the search for like-minded musicians continued. The search ended in the fall of 2006 when Kurt Knudsen (bass) posted an ad searching for musicians who liked to play heavy music. Soon after, Tom Meehan (drums), and Nate Moyer (guitar) came into the picture. Nate amicably parted ways with Laetus to pursue a degree in law in May of 2007, and shortly thereafter Jon Allen of [Rebirth] to [Ends] filled the spot.

The name Laetus (pronounced lie-ate-us) comes from Latin and equates to "happy" or "joyful." The name may at first seem antithetical to our style of music, like a big man being nicknamed "Tiny," but that is not the case.

We settled on the name partly because we thought it sounded cool, but also because of its root meaning. We play because we like to, not for a paycheck or popularity; we're happy doing it and that is enough. Whether rehearsing, writing new material, or performing for a crowd we aren't just some guys playing music. We are Laetus, in every sense of the word.

Lyrics

Candles

Written By: M. Jandreau

Here I lie, so wide awake
How much longer must I wait

No longer my concern
No matter how low your candle’s burned down

One more time I’ve been betrayed
Once again, heart pierced by blade

No longer my concern
No matter how low your candle’s burned down
With only yourself to blame
You can’t extinguish the flames now

Gravity

Written By: M. Jandreau

A mental foundry of constraint
Forged by the manacles you've made
Led astray

Defying gravity you'll rise, arise
Release what you've confined
And leave it behind

A promise made to lead the way
With blinders on, can't see the reigns
Turn to chains

Defying gravity you'll rise, arise
Release what you've confined
And leave it behind

Arise (3x)
Defying gravity you'll rise
Arise, you'll rise, arise
Defying gravity you'll rise

Hanging on

Written By: M. Jandreau

Shadows on my wall
Cast in black and white
Resemble your face
I keep this ruefulness
Buried deep inside
My future, my fate
I’ve been across the chasm
And only once looked down
I closed my eyes

But I’m still hanging on
Why else would I be here
Another day that’s gone
Heaven help me

Living a dream
Lost in memories
Familiar noise
Hope and disbelief
Overtaking me
Can’t be your voice
The sun has set behind me
I let the shadows come
As sunlight fades

But I’m still hanging on
Why else would I be here
Another day that’s gone
Heaven help me

And through the devastation
The thought had crossed my mind
I could let go

But I’m still hanging on
Why else would I be here
Before the chance is gone
Heaven help me

I’m still hanging on
I’m still hanging on
I’m still hanging on
Memento mori

Black sky

Written By: M. Jandreau

Looking up while falling down, your hand’s just out of reach
The sky gets darker, you get smaller, then black is all I see

Lost and still forsaken
Burning away inside
(Softly spoken) underneath a darkened sky

Looking back on times long gone, signs I should have seen
Knowing that I can’t reclaim the illusions I believed

Lost and still forsaken
Burning away inside
(Softly spoken) underneath a darkened sky

Had the chance

Written By: M. Jandreau

Take my hand and hold it tight
Sometimes things can go wrong
Sometimes they turn out all right

After all we’ve been through
The pleasure and the pain
And if I had the chance
I wouldn’t change a thing

Gone away, far or near
Sometimes it feels like a million miles
Sometimes it feels you’re right here

After all we’ve been through
The pleasure and the pain
And if I had the chance
I wouldn’t change a thing
