"Artist’s Point Of View & Video Premiere: ‘Always June’ – Lake Malawi"

Lake Malawi are a band centred around musician Albert Černý, and the lovely Albert has taken some time to chronicle the life of the band’s latest track ‘Always June’. Not only that, but he has offered us here at Shout4Music the opportunity to give you a first look at the song’s official music video!

The song is filled with a catchy vocal line that you can learn all about below, along with how the song’s producers forced the band to present a better musical version of themselves. The result is a chirpy pop number not far from the likes of Noah and The Whale or other summery type indie outfits. Certain to brush away the lingering winter blues if you give them, and ‘Always June’, a chance.

When I arrived in London to hear the first mix of ‘Always June’ by Brad and Charlie from Dean Street Studios who've worked with Alt-J, Jamiroquai and Passenger, I thought I'd commit suicide. There were these gaps in the song with only the drums left intact... When Patrick [Karpentski, Lake Malawi guitarist] asked them what that meant, they just said: "We deleted those parts, 'cause they weren't good enough." I didn't know what to say.

On the tube home from the studio, I was still quite pissed off and confused about this. How am I supposed to be optimistic now? Maybe this really is a chance for us to come up with something better. This is how the vocal hook was born. I have to admit I kind of stole that from Bat for Lashes. I imagined Natasha Khan walking barefoot up a hill on a clear spring day wearing a light dress dancing with the wind.

Alex Beitzke who tracked ‘Always June’ with us was great because he wanted to listen to all our other songs first. "To get the context," he said. And then we went for a walk outside where I told him the story behind the lyrics and how I feel about the words in general.

Finally, I think people will get the big picture when they watch the video with me dragging my green suitcase down the street. A few years ago, I decided to write “HOLIDAYS FOREVER” across it with a white marker. That is the mindset we're chasing with LAKE MALAWI. It's a real suitcase I just opened to write these lines on my laptop. Sometimes it's heavy with depressive crap, but other times it feels light as a feather swaying in the wind to a song by Bat for Lashes. - Kyle McCormick
