La Mambanegra - La Compostura (video oficial)
El reconocido músico caleño Jacobo Vélez, líder por más de diez años de La Mojarra Eléctrica, una de las agrupaciones más relevantes de las Nuevas Músicas Colombianas presenta su nuevo grupo: La Mambanegra. Vélez, virtuoso compositor, arreglista, clarinetista, saxofonista, cantante y director musical, ha sido estudioso investigador y explorador de los sonidos del caribe y el pacífico colombiano, el jazz y los ritmos afrocubanos.
Cabeza de diversos proyectos, ha compartido escenario junto a artistas como Chuco Valdés, Larry Harlow, Diego el Cigala y Sargento García. Sus canciones han llegado además a las pantallas, apareciendo en las bandas sonoras de Paraíso Travel, Buscando a Miguel y Perro Come Perro.
Hoy Jacobo sale al ruedo con La Mambanegra, una poderosa orquesta latina compuesta por once músicos, en la que convergen la salsa neoyorquina, los sonidos jamaiquinos, el funk y el hip-hop, y en la que se evidencia la influencia de Maceo Parker y James Brown -gigantes del funk-, de toda la historia de la música latina en Nueva York, y de Juan Formell y el proceso del songo en Cuba.
La Mambanegra, un combo con mucho swing y sabor, en el que Vélez encarna un personaje llamado El Callegüeso, enciende la fiesta, y debuta con el sencillo La Compostura, reluciendo un videoclip dirigido por David Pombo, que es retrato de Cali, de sus íconos, sus personajes, sus ritmos y sus barrios, con imágenes que enmarcan ese universo caleño de baile y gozadera.
Integrada por el pianista Cristhian Salgado, el baterista Harold Orozco, el bajista Jefferson Obando, Epifanio Bazán en las congas, Jorge Eliecer Huertas en el tres, Frank Alexis Rentería en el saxofón, Diego Giraldo en la trompeta, Fabio Lucumi Martínez en el trombón y las voces de Jacobo Vélez, William Angulo Ocoro y Julia Díaz, La Mambanegra llega con dosis de alto voltaje musical y la historia encantadora de un mítico protagonista: El Callegüeso.

*** La Mamba Negra & the legend of the Callegüeso... ***
Until now, nobody knew anything about the Callegüeso.
It took Jacobo Vélez, columbian virtuoso, leader of the Mamba Negra band, and great grandchild of the aforementioned legend to revive this wonderful story in music: that of a mythical hero from the working-class neighborhood El Obrero de Cali (birthplace of salsa), whose incredible adventures still haunt the popular psyche...
The Callegüeso is an anonymous hero, born in Cali in 1900, son of a nigerian slave and her master. He is a man who has travelled through his fair share of latin music history, between Cali, Buenaventura, La Havana and New York.
Leaving from the Buenaventura harbour in Columbia as a clandestine passenger, he was discovered, beaten and thrown at sea by his boats crew. He was rescued by a nearby fisherman who turned out to be the babalao sorcerer El Malembe.
In La Havana, he receives from the hands of Chano Pozo himself an ebony flute called La Mambanegra, a name that hell give to the orchestra hell later form in New York during the forties.
The Callegüeso participated in all of the rumbero movement in Spanish Harlem, El Barrio, El Palladium, and there he meets Mario Bauzá and Tito Rodriguez.
One night, while hes playing with his orchestra in La Conga bar, he gets arrested during an anti-drug and anti-prostitution raid, and is deported back to Columbia.
He becomes famous in Cali (in the tolerance zone) for his magical stories, his music and his dancing.
Until now, nobody knew anything about the Callegüeso. It took Jacobo Vélez, his musician great-grandchild, to remember this breathtaking story and to try to pick up its thread. He then realized that the Callegüeso was alive and 112 years old.
After a mysterious encounter, Vélez decided to follow the lineage and tradition of la mala maña (the bad habit), invoking his great grandfathers powers to revive the myth and legend.

Native to Cali (Columbia), city of celebration and salsa par excellence, the band is composed of 11 exceptional musicians. Their sound borrows from seventies New-York salsa as well as Jamaican music, funk and hip-hop.
Led by the tireless musician and storyteller Jacobo Vélez who embodies the Callegüeso (see above), a forgotten legend now part of La Mamba Negras mythology.
Jacobo Vélez is now considered as one of the leading figures of a new generation and contemporary avant-garde wave in Columbia. After having revolutionized the local scene at the beginning of the millenium with his now arch-famous band La Mojarra Electrica, he has more recently been spotted working (live and in studio) alongside artists such as Sergent Garcia and SideStepper.
