PURSUIT OF ONE'S CALLING: A Biography of
LANCELOT DRUMMONDS
Being aware of your true calling since the age of 5 is a luxury not many of us have, but soul singer Lance Drummonds happens to be one of the very fortunate. After viewing a tape of his singing at a family get together, Drummonds has been pursuing his dream of showcasing his talents to the world ever since.
While today’s popular music culture currently venerates icons such as John Legend and Alicia Keys, both of whom Drummonds greatly admires and consistently draws comparisons to, music of another era continues to inspire him. Artists like Teddy Pendergrass, The OJays, Donnie Hathaway, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, Al Green and many more inspire the soulful and ambitious compositions, which are commonplace in Lance’s performances and written music. In regards to this, Drummonds says “I’m different in the sense that the music I create possesses energy. A lot of R&B today is well put together, however it is not as energetic as the R&B of the 60s and 70s. I am into creating energetic, heartfelt music and that people can relate to.”
Lance’s proclamations are not far from the truth, and in fact, may be even modest proclamations of his abilities. After a breakout performance in the spring of 2006 where Lance Drummonds fully composed and performed with a live band at Wesleyan University, the blog world was immediately set ablaze with postings and re-postings of the video chronicling his amazing performance. On sites such as Palmsout.com, Soulshower.com and a few others, comments such as, “Wow, even with the amateur recording there’s no disguising that soulful voice - beautiful!” were made that point well to something that Drummonds has aspired to and sensed indistinctly all of his life, and that is superstardom in every sense of the word.
Besides an immense propensity for composition and a huge, heartwarming voice, Lance is an extremely hardworking and complex artist.
Family is of the utmost importance to Lance, and he cites a potentially fatal experience regarding his younger brother as one that permanently changed his life, reinforcing his strong desire to become a successful artist and be in a position to provide and protect to the best of his ability. When asked about this experience, Lance said
“It basically taught me to live life today like its your last day, cause you never know if it is. Love and cherish those who love and cherish you cause you never know when it’s theirs.”
It is this passion, this drive, and this focus that will undoubtedly buoy Lancelot Adrian Drummonds, Jr. into the ranks of music’s upper echelon of talent. It is said that life repeats itself and often works in cycles: Lance seeing himself on the television screen at the age of five, albeit just a homemade video-tape at the time, was nothing short of a forecast of greater things to come.
