Way Above Here

What struck me most about this recording was the high production values and Lance’s excellent musicianship. An album filled with guitar virtuosity, (he sings lead and most harmonies and he plays guitar lead and rhythm, bass, mandolin, ukulele and resophonic guitar), slick arrangements and all original songs, Lance shows himself to be a gifted singer songwriter and a fine example of the caliber of acoustic music in the Queensland scene.
For my folkiefied ears – the album feels more suited to the modern country music scene, but the more I listened the more I liked the songs. Strong personal lyrics coupled with good melodic lines with tasteful harmonies are to be savoured regardless of genre.
A feature of the album is the use of resophonic guitar (especially on Hole), and some very tasty mandolin. I wish the voices were further forward in the mix and I would have preferred less drums – but that’s my folk ears (and prejudices) showing I fear.
The title track is my favourite with a catchychorus and a beguiling lyric life can only get better, it always works out that way and the obligatory train song Sound of the Train is also noteworthy for its catchy chorus and lead guitar. Little Out of Love features the mandolin and the ukulele and great harmonies. Somewhere in Between is a haunting yearning love song that I could hear myself singing.
Way Above Here is certainly a worthy listen, especially for guitar aficionados and those interested in original, contemporary acoustic based music with heart.

Growing up in Far North Queensland, Australia, Lance Galloway knew from a very early age that he wanted to play the guitar. As a young child he would often slip into his older sister’s bedroom and practice hers in secret, as his attraction to the instrument was unyielding. It wasn’t until his early teens, however, that he acquired a guitar of his own, thus beginning his enduring love affair with guitar playing, singing, songwriting – MUSIC!
Lance has spent more than 20 years devoted to perfecting these passions. Early influences from Celtic jigs and Bluegrass harmonies to later inspiration including Gillian Welch & David Rawlings; Bob Brozman; & Tim O'Brien,have escorted Lance through a melodious journey, leading to masterfully crafted original music.
Lance has been very fortunate to have worked with some great players along the way, such as Phil Emmanuel; Nigel Pegrum(Steeleye Span);James Blundell; & Cornell Williams(Jon Cleary Band).
Recently, Lance has performed at Yungaburra Folk Festival,FNQ Country Music Festival, & the Croydon Poddy Dodgers Festival.
Stemming from intricately performed guitar and mandolin, alongside his captivatingly pure voice, Lance’s music is an alluring array of acoustic blends that speak directly from the heart of life, love and the road. His debut album “Way Above Here” (completed late 2007) contains 12 original tracks all written and co-produced by Lance. An eclectic mixture of folk, roots and blues, with a splash of country thrown in for good measure, Lance’s songs incite a range of emotions through his soaring melodies, gripping harmonies and candid phrasing.
Now based in Brisbane, Lance has already received radio airplay on 4OUR 101.5FM, 4BAYFM and 2CBD and his album has recently been distributed to 65 community radio stations across Australia. “Way Above Here” is available on-line (www.myspace.com/lancegalloway) and on the shelves of Rocking Horse Records and The Country Music Store (Brisbane).
Lance is dedicated to building a solid fan-base through the promotion of his original music with high-quality live performances.
