Accomplishment

Williams, a music minister at Highway Church in Paterson, recently released his first gospel album with his band, Lance Williams and True Worship. The recording, a blend of Christian, religious, contemporary and traditional stylings, was recorded at the Agape Family Worship center in Rahway. It is called "I Live to Love You."

In early September, Williams organized his fifth "spiritual retreat," bringing influential religious leaders and musicians from all over the country to Newark for a three-day festival. Its goal was to uplift the city through music and inspiration, Williams said.

Though people tried to discourage him from holding the retreat in Newark, Williams said his goal was to show city residents that faith in themselves can lead to good deeds and better lives.

"Someone needs to let them know they can accomplish anything they'd like," Williams said. "

Proceeds from the album will in part serve a needy family each year and go to local city charities, Williams said. For more information, go to www.Trueworship.org or www.myspace.com/lancewilliamsmusic.

The family that sings together

The youngest of six children, Williams always sang with his siblings. His mother instilled in them solid values, and taught the family that music can heal. They started in New Brunswick as a group of family vocalists, going to church and participating in choirs. Now, his music group has been performing for about 15 years, and the work has taken Williams all over the world — as far as Italy and Japan.

"Singing can really be used as a teaching tool," he said. "It can really pull people together by raising those in the community."

Ages in the group range from early 20s to 70s, Williams said. His mother, Helen, is the oldest at 73.

Hobbies

Williams enjoys traveling. He has explored Europe — including Switzerland, France, and Belgium — and visited Hawaii. He likes also bowling and watching action movies like "Die Hard."

Education

Williams graduated from New Brunswick Public High School, then attended Philadelphia's College of Performing Arts, where he studied music and honed his singing abilities.

He also took courses in psychology at Middlesex County College in Edison.
