"Country Flavor with an Added Spice- Interiew with LANTANA"

Taking a break from their Nashville recording sessions, Texas-based country group, LANTANA, spoke to Broken Records Magazine about their upcoming CD release. With their 2006 debut album, Unbridled, boasting two top ten hits on the Texas music chart, the LANTANA duo of Biz Haddock and Dalene Richelle return to the recording studio to track their forthcoming CD with the assistance of music producer, Johnny Garcia, noted, in part, for his work with Collin Raye, Mindy McCready and Sherrie Austin.
“LANTANA formed about ten years ago as a trio, and Dalene joined in 2006. It is now 2013, and out of necessity, we are a duo and we are thankful for the change. We are cutting our first album as a duo,” Haddock explained.
Describing LANTANA’s musical style, Haddock said, “Our music is universal in subject matter. We are not locked into a country style even though we favor country; we also include alternative country, a southern rock vibe and some Americana. My musical influences are rock and roll and Dalene’s are Don Henry and Dolly Parton. By combining all of these influences, it is hard to see just one style with us.” Of their current CD project, Haddock stated, “We have more of an emphasis on harmonies with a rockin’ feel to it.” Richelle added, “We also needed to include a little girlie, fun, stuff too.”
Speaking of their current Nashville recording sessions, Haddock exclaimed, “There has been lots of writing and pre-production and it has been a long week of fifteen hour days. We write most of our material, and we are proud of it, and it has been a great experience to record it.” Referring to the ten songs that were just tracked, Haddock compared their recent recording session to, “having a baby. Just like birthing a child, we were waiting in anticipation of the baby, and yesterday we birthed ten babies.”
When I asked if performing was an aspiration at an early age, Haddock revealed,
“Performing was never on either of our radars. We were very shy.” Richelle added, “We were both inspired by music at an early age and it was always a part of our spirit,” and performances provided an outlet, “to connect with people,” and overcome shyness.
With a January 2014 CD release on LANTANA’s calendar, Haddock and Richelle return to Nashville in a few weeks to track their vocals. A music video to accompany this CD is in the planning stages as well. A song close to their hearts, Behind the Smile, will appear on their upcoming CD. Behind the Smile is a special song written for their friend that has an autistic child, and also supports the charitable group of the same name, devoted to spreading awareness for Autism. In closing, Haddock extended, “thanks to Johnny Garcia for taking on this project, and thanks to Besty Hadlock and Dalene for being a loyal teammate.” LANTANA’s musical career, according to Richelle, “has been a long journey, and we are finally at the right place, at the right time, with the right people.” - Broken Records Magazine

"LANTANA Song Spreads Word on Autism"

Before her son Zane was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 1/2, former Calgary Stampeders Outrider Karolyn Wootton had no idea what the condition was all about.
Now, a year later, she hopes a song inspired by her son, written by her friend, will help spread the word to others.
“His speech was delayed and we didn’t know why and I didn’t know anything about autism and that’s why I’m so passionate about wanting to spread awareness, because I had no idea,” she said.
Dalene Richelle, also a former Stampeders Outrider and anthem-singer-turned-musician who now lives in Dallas, said her band Lantana was approached by the Autism Treatment Centers of Texas to write a song about autism for a fundraiser.
She immediately called Wootton, who shared a breakthrough moment she had with her son.
“The most beautiful moment she shared with me was she looked at her little boy and was like ‘you want to tell me something but you don’t know how to say it, you don’t know how to communicate with me’ and she burst into tears because she got it,” she said.
“And that inspired the whole song — that breakthrough of realizing it’s almost like a different language.”
Entitled Behind The Smile, the song will be added to the playlist during the band’s tour, with upcoming stops in Edmonton and a Behind The Smile fundraiser in Vancouver Aug. 12.
The song, which the Calgary Stampeders are considering playing at a future game, is named after a website Wootton created for Zane in hopes of spreading awareness and gathering support and funds for autism.
For Wootton, the song is “out of this world.”
“My heart is so full knowing that there’s other people out there who are fighting for this too and wanting to help,” she said.
“There’s no better feeling knowing someone has written a song about your kid and also in this situation and they have captured us totally in the song.” - Calgary Sun

"In Country Music: LANTANA"

With 13 well-produced tracks, Texas-based Lantana's debut album Unbridled proves that an independent release can have the sound, look and feel of an album released by a record label with deep pockets. With the right amount of promotion, Lantana should find an audience for this well-crafted album.

A Trio Comes Together

Equally successful in their previous lives, Texans Biz Haddock, Karol Ann DeLong and Canada native Dalene Richelle, the three women that make up Lantana, didn't need to start a musical career. However, each woman's own desire for performing lead them to the formation of the trio. Based in Dallas, Texas, Lantana was signed to BGM Records to release their thirteen-song CD Unbridled.
Their first single, "Country As A City Girl Can Be," leads off the record. Currently inside the Top 30 of the Texas Music Chart the song features lead vocals from each of the band members while the melody of the song is strongly played by some session musicians in Texas that rival any of those currently working in Nashville. The production by Bill Green is top notch as well, a good sign for an unknown group recording for a little-known label. "Ride 'Em Cowboy" and "I Ain't Your Jailer" are fun tracks while the banjo and fiddle-laced "The Juice Ain't Worth Your Squeeze" showcases that the trio can write songs as well as they sing them (particularly with it's fun song title).
The up-tempo songs continue along with the sassy "No Tresspassin'" Jeffrey Steele's fun "Everything" and "You Know How It Is." Recalling SheDaisy, the latter song, penned by Byron Hill and Odie Blackmon, certainly has the lyric melody and vocal of a mainstream hit. The gorgeous ballad "Let Somebody Love You" also has future hit potential. It's one of those songs that instantly struck me in the gut with honest lyrics and a heart-felt vocal delivery.

With twangy guitars and fun piano fills, "Give" has a strong message with its lyric of "it's not what you get it's what you give" in regards to how people will remember you when your life is over. It's a variation on the "you get what you give" theme. "Roll With The Changes" is another tempo track with some great banjo fills while "Saving It Up For Saturday Night" is a cool track written (with Tom Paden) by two former Ricochet band members, Eddie Kilgallon and Greg Cook. "What Turns Me On" is a funky little track that's similar to what Shania Twain's made a career out of (I.E. a song for the ladies that has lyrics about a man who refuses to do certain things). "Feel Like Rockin'" is a song that ends the album with an anthem that screams 'Girl's Night Out.'
With thirteen well-presented tracks, Dallas, Texas-based Lantana is certainly a band to keep an eye on. In addition to the well produced music, the album artwork doesn't have the look of a limited budget and recalls the cover of Little Big Town's Equity Records album. The inside of the booklet includes lyrics and all the pertinent musician information and, of course, thank you notes from each of the ladies. If you like fun, up tempo contemporary country music, you should check out Lantana's Unbridled. It is a joyful listen that sounds as good on repeated listening as it did the first time. - About.com

"The women of Lantana reject Dixie Chicks comparisons."

Byline: Mario Tarradell

COPPELL, Texas _ Yes, they're a female vocal trio from Dallas. And they play a polished yet roots-driven mix of country, blues, bluegrass and pop. But the women in Lantana would rather you didn't compare them to the Dixie Chicks. They realize, however, that may be a pipe dream.

"We've been faced with that question since our very first show five years ago when we sang at the Rangers game," says Lantana founding member Biz Haddock while sitting on her earth-tone family room couch sandwiched between group mates Karol Ann DeLong and Dalene Richelle.

"The band was in the very beginning stages and we were immediately hit with, `Are you going to be the next Dixie Chicks?' What? We're just moms singing. We were just doomed from the start. There was no way to circumvent that."

She's probably right. But there are many differences between the two groups. The Lantana women are older, already mothers and far more entrenched in their lives than the sprightly Chicks were when their 1998 major-label debut CD, "Wide Open Spaces," was released. Richelle, the youngest at 35, has been married to Frank … - Dallas Morning News

"Gutsy, Gorgeous, Gritty LANTANA Brings Live Show To Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo"

Catch Them At The Hideout March 7

"Kickin' butt in country music is a wonderful old tradition, but Lantana bring a zestfulness and artistic finesse to that tradition that you cannot begin to imagine till you've heard the music."- Bill Littleton, The Bridgeworks
Dallas,TX (February 1, 2007) Gutsy, gorgeous and genre-bending Texas trio LANTANA brings their exciting live show to The Hideout on March 7, during the HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO. LANTANA's musical fusion of country, rock and blues has won them not only Texas Music, national and international chart success, but the attention of Dallas Morning News writer Mario Tarradell as well. With their debut hit single, "Country As A City Girl Can Be," and a knock-out show at the State Fair of Texas, LANTANA joined George Strait, The Dixie Chicks and Willie Nelson on the writer's Top 10 country shows and CD-pick lists for 2006. The "buzz" surrounding LANTANA has generated numerous high-profile performances, including: Bill Mack's XM Satellite Radio show; American Music Channel; Fox TV/Dallas; Country Radio Seminar/Nashville, Crossroads Live! TV, and several Gaylord Texan events. Just last month, Biz, Dalene and Karol Ann were invited to perform intimate, acoustic shows for staffers at the Country Music Association, and Music Row and Country Weekly magazines. Print features include Modern Luxury Dallas and Best in Texas. Sponsored by the western fashion destination, BARBWIRE (Texas and Arizona), you can catch the enormously talented (and fetchingly-clad) threesome in their third Country Weekly feature this March. LANTANA's current single, "Let Somebody Love You," is garnering rave reviews and heavy early spins. The track, consistently the most-requested song at their live shows, is from their BGM Records' CD, UNBRIDLED.

Don't miss LANTANA at The Hideout on March 7; their next performances include COUNTRY THUNDER (Waxahachie), the Paris Country Festival (France), and select dates in Switzerland.

"Dallas Morning News Rates Lantana In 2006 Top Ten"

Mario Tarradell of The Dallas Morning News, in his Country Music Year In Review, rates Lantana's performance at the State Fair of Texas in October among the top ten shows of the year: "Local female country trio know they'll fight the Dixie Chicks-wannabe tag. Hopefully that will fade as they keep gelling as an entity. This debut gig with the current lineup, Biz Haddock, Karol Ann DeLong and Dalene Richelle, showed so much promise."
He also ranks their Unbridled as one of the top ten albums released in 2006: "The most promising new group of the year comes from our back yard. Local female vocal trio gelled beautifully in the studio, weaving gorgeous harmonies on a batch of memorable cuts, most notably 'Country As a City Girl Can Be,' 'Savin' It Up for Saturday Night' and 'Ride Em Cowboy.' "New Music Weekend- LANTANA"

These three Texas ladies are currently tearing up the Lone Star State of Texas with their energetic songs and performances. They are all from Dallas Texas and just decided to get together and sing – something they do well. They’ve played venues including the Houston Astrodome, Louisiana Superdome, Texas Stadium, Texas State Fair and Nashville’s Wildhorse Saloon. They have released two singles which hit in the top 10 on the Texas Music Chart twice, something that has only been done by one female trio before them – that trio being the Dixie Chicks.

This trio has a unique blend of voices and a really interesting harmony. They are a blend of Southern Rock and Texan Country. They have one song “Texas” which is bouncy, bright and gritty all wrapped into one song. It’s a song about a man – of course it is! A Texan man! They sing that they have seen all the wonders of Texas but the most impressive thing they have seen is “Baby you’re the best thing in Texas I’ve ever seen” – hmm, must be singing about a Texas Cowboy….rodeo cowboy I’m thinking with the Stetson hat and blue jeans. Yep – a natural wonder is what I’m looking at I think!! And is that a fiddle I’m hearing? Oh yeah – thinking so!

“Savin’ It Up for Saturday Night” is a honky tonk song talking about saving pennies up for a Saturday night gone dancing! There’s fast beat with fiddles (again – yeah!) and honky tonk piano and a melody that just makes you want to move – toe tapping, dancing in your chair or on the floor – doesn’t matter – the song is just a lot of fun!!

“I Got What You Need” is a bluesy ballad singing of hearts on the line and love being the hardest thing in this world. Their harmony is supremely showcased in this tune and the lyrics are grass-roots about love and being there to help someone through anything. It’s a soothing ballad about love and life.

They are gearing up for another album – one that might just get farther than Texas and you might want to see these ladies in person and grab the new CD when they get ready to release it! I don’t think you’ll go wrong on this trio!

Bio

Big hearts, big talent and boundless energy are the life's blood of Lantana.  Ever-changing, ever-evolving and endlessly entertaining, Biz Haddock and Dalene Richelle are the newest incarnation of LANTANA, the talented Dallas-based Country duo that was originally formed as a trio in 2003.

"We have been through some major changes," admits Biz Haddock, LANTANA's founding member, "but with change comes growth, and I'm proud to say that LANTANA is better now than it's ever been.  We're going strong."

Strong, progressive, vibrant: these are all words that could describe the music of LANTANA.  "It's music for everyone," Biz notes.

"Life has given us no shortage of inspirational material to write this album,"
Dalene says with a soft smile.  "We have lived these songs."  Both Haddock and Richelle are also uniquely talented vocalists, with influences ranging from Rock/Pop (Led Zeppelin, Jewel, Madonna) to Country (Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, Trisha Yearwood).  With diverse musical backgrounds, the two might not seem like a natural "fit" based on musical tastes, but they make absolute magic when they join together in song. "We both have the same motivation in music, and it stems from a very spiritual place.  It's a soul connection that comes through," Dalene explains.
