“Migration of the Groove”

“Led by the supremely talented Larry Dunn this Bay Area band has blues, jump swing and rock-n-roll covered like a live-wired electric blanked. Migration of the Groove features an intriguing merger of hand clapping traditional grooves with a foot stomping contemporary style that will provide you with plenty to tell your buddies about!”
Southland Blues Magazine (Los Angeles)

“Larry Dunn is a solid lead vocalist. Born to Jump and Avalon really cook! Here to Stay and My Brand of the Blues show a more laid back side. There’s a lot of exciting
music on this record!”
Rick Hall, Oregon’s Cascade Blues Association

“A highly touted blues and R&B outfit with outstanding credentials. Migration of the Groove finds a skilled and energetic five piece working it out on a series of oily in-the- pocket dance tunes. The lyrics will appeal to anyone who knows a little about hard living and bad habits and the rock solid grooves are a sure invitation to dance.”
Don Adair, Spokesman Review, Spokane, WA

“Migration of the Groove is a virtual portfolio…representing a wide spectrum of the blues genre including jazzy jump, Texas boogie and rockin' country blues…enough infectious high energy to move even the toughest audience. A CD you’ll play again and again!” Leslie Ann Knight, Monday Morning Blues DJ
Radio Station KKUP, Cupertino, CA

“The Hound of Music”

“This band grooves. L. Dunn’s guitar playing is a step beyond…Great key and sax solos. Enjoyable blues well produced, arranged and played.”
Steve Raible, Blues To-Do’s, Seattle, WA

“Larry Dunn’s Rhythm Sheiks are a riveting roadhouse band and the groups new CD is outstanding.”
Lee Hildebrand, Express, Oakland, CA

“The Hound of Music contains some smooth R&B…also invokes The Band at its dirge-like best… All told, it’s tastier than a barbecue-basted pork rib.”
C.S., Leo Magazine, Louisville, KY

“ I liked it (Hound of Music) so much, I couldn’t stop playing it.”
John Lee Hooker, Blues Legend

“The Hound of Music is a great party record. Band leader Larry Dunn’s songwriting and arranging is masterful and if justice is done you’ll be hearing more from the ultra-talented Rhythm Sheiks.”
Joseph Jordan, Blues Access, S.F., CA

"Review of 'One Of These Days' CD"

A rootsy affair that touches on blues, Tex-Mex, and jazz, former Dynatones’ guitarist Dunn delivers wonderfully tailored tunes that manage to highlight his ultra-hip, yet ultra-musical guitar playing. His bluesy, organic phrasing deftly mixes in slick modal flavorings (from Santana to Robben Ford), and his ability to outline a tangy, twisting chord progression—on the album’s title track for instance—without going into chromatic la-la land is a real treat, as are his velvety octave licks. Dunn leans on spanky, mildly overdriven single-coil tones for the most part, but the album’s last three cuts feature Dunn’s formidable acoustic chops. Good tunes and killer playing. What’s not to like.

Bio

Guitarist, singer-songwriter Larry Dunn has been a member of the San Francisco music scene for over 20 years: performing, recording and touring. As a songwriter his music has been; placed in film and TV, included on various compilation albums, covered by other artists, been in the top 10 on syndicated radio, and has been bootlegged. As a performer he has had the opportunity to work with Bo Diddley, Eddie Money, Steve Cropper, Big Joe Turner, Mary Wells and Sir Mac Rice (the man that penned “Mustang Sally” and “Respect Yourself”) as well as many of the great local musicians in the Bay Area. He spent 6 years touring and recording with The Dynatones and as guitarist-songwriter for that group Larry recorded one album for Warner Bros. Records, two albums for Rounder Records and a single for Rhino Records. His work with The Dynatones also included opening for many great artists including The Four Tops, The Stylistics, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jr. Walker and the list goes on.
After leaving The Dynatones he formed and led his own group The Rhythm Sheiks. This band had a long run in San Francisco performing regularly in Bay Area nightclubs and included two tours in Europe. Gone were the days of relying on cover songs to get the job done. The focus and success of this group was the solid, well-oiled original material that Larry was writing. “There is nothing I love more than going into a club where the audience is used to hearing the same old cover stuff, you know…tried and true but nothin’ new…and bringing down the house with original songs. If you can do that you may as well go for it, put in some new twists and turns, trick it up a little bit and take the audience for a ride”, Dunn comments. While with The Rhythm Sheiks he wrote, recorded and produced two independent CDs that were well received by both fans and critics alike. The band also opened concerts for Tower of Power, Dr. John, The Thunderbirds, Robben Ford, Junior Wells and C.J. Chenier among others.
And now with 2 new CDs of remarkable original material and a new band, the Larry Dunn Trio, Larry is rockin’ again. Always staying true to the great American Music Tradition, he’s included the roadhouse jumpin’ blues and R&B of his past CDs with the new rockin’ Americana sound of his latest CD.
