Press

"The Detroit Free Press"

“ one of the most vital players on the Detroit scene... his lyrical sound is deceptive... warm and inviting without pleading... Nozero’s solos have deep melodic integrity... Notice how he bounces flirtatiously, the seductive melodies carried on waves of interesting rhythmic shapes... You’ll hang on every note...”
“anyone attending the Detroit International Jazz Festival (formerly Montreux) knows that Detroit alto saxophonist Larry Nozero’s bands have shamed groups fronted by national stars...” - Mark Stryker

"The Detroit Jazz Magazine"

“ the Larry Nozero Quartet is unique not only in the skill of the individual members, but in it’s longevity... it is fitting that the alto saxophonist with the purest, warmest sound should decide to do an album of romantic ballads...” - Mitch Genova

"Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival Director"

“ Nozero was pleasingly cohesive, full of colorful rhythmic fire, radiating professionalism throughout all of his cool blue material...” - Jim Dulzo

Bio

Best known for his performance with his jazz quartet, Larry Nozero's career has encompassed many musical styles and ensembles from quartets to big bands. His formative years were spent in Detroit, his hometown, during a time when the city was known as a jazz mecca. While still in his teens, Nozero rapidly became a first call musician and could be found performing with many of the most prominent names in entertainment, both on stage and in the recording studio. As a constant in the stable of musicians that produced the Motown Sound, Larry Nozero became part of the marriage between jazz musicians and pop singers who created music that is now legendary. He has performed, toured, and recorded with many of the major names in jazz and pop music, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Sergio Mendez, Stan Kenton, and Henry Mancini.

Larry has recorded several albums, including Sphere, Time, Island Fever, Grand Hotel, Kaleidoscopin', Street of Dreams, Warm, Live at the Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival and his newest release, featuring the music of Eddie Russ, Four For Three.

In 1997, Larry received very special recognition when he was inducted into the Legends of Jazz International Hall of Fame for his outstanding quality and entertaining musical performances. He has also received the Spirit of Detroit Award in recognition of exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership, and dedication to improving the quality of life.

Recently, Larry received the "Outstanding Jazz Instrumentalist" award from the Detroit Music Awards (April, 2001).

Larry has been on the staff of the Wayne State University Jazz Studies program since 1982.
