[MP.G]‘s Evan Sue-Ping has been working intently and privately on a solo record for quite some time now (almost a decade by his count). Sue-Ping described it to me as “an intensely personal labour of love,” that was made all the more personal a year ago today, when his brother Paul passed away due to kidney failure.
In tribute to his brother’s life, Sue-Ping quietly posted “My Memories Are a Commodity (Reel to Real mix)”, the first song from Las Venus Skyway‘s upcoming sophomore record on SoundCloud just after his passing, and today, on the first anniversary, releases a second, “The Appearances of Day to Day Living”.
Written as he watched his sibling struggle through the last years of his life, “The Appearances Of Day To Day Living” is Sue-Ping’s most confessional, emotionally stirring recording. “This is my brave face and unknowing smile,” he explains at the song’s opening, “I’m feeling confident / God at least I know I’ve tried”. When reality sets in, Sue-Ping muses, just as any of us who have lost someone close, “And like that we roll on / And just like that we’re past / now this is my blank face,”.
Sue-Ping plans on releasing Las Venus Skyway’s album Stars End Explosively by the end of the year, using the record’s release to encourage fans to support the Kidney Foundation of Canada and consider becoming an organ donor. He’s set up a donation page in Paul’s memory here. - Quick Before It Melts
Las Venus Skyway is the latest musical offering from M.P.G’s Evan Sue-Ping. An intensely personal and electronic leaning solo endeavor, the project has been in the works for more than ten years. When Sue-Ping’s brother passed from kidney failure last fall, “The Appearances of Day To Day Living” emerged as a way to set the weight of watching his life come to a close to a telling and cinematic soundscape. - Alan Cross' A Journal Of Musical Things
