"The 2011 WBRU Rock Hunt semi-finalists, Pt. 1"

LAST ONE OUT (lastoneoutmusic.com): College boys just wanna have fun: this quirky quartet have come a long way since sending me their debut demo Whammy last year. The follow-up, Double Whammy, boasts the FM-ready, piano-heavy "Way Too Cold," plus the upbeat cuts "Life Shark" and "Lovin' Tonight." Last One Out singer Jeff Gahan checked in from Florida, where the band was soaking up their last spring break before graduation in May.
"We entered this contest with the hopes of pursuing our musical career rather than joining the workforce," he said. "We hope to take our music as far as we possibly can because it has been the only thing our lives that has made sense thus far." - Providence Phoenix

"VulGarrity triumph at the 'BRU Rock Hunt"

Packs of female fans (one holding up a pink posterboard that read "Ladies Love Last One Out") came out in full groupie-love force for PC senior classmen Last One Out (facebook.com/lastoneout), led by spritely singer/keyboardist Scott Royal. They thrive on bouncy jams and an unabashed ham factor, and the crowd was eating it up right from the start of set opener "Space Kangaroo." Cuts from their latest EP, Double Whammy, rocked a bit harder in the live setting, though the occasional rootsy breakdowns didn't translate to the dancing attendees. But the catchy singles "Glue" and "Life Shark" have not left my head since last Friday. Last One Out is waterslide-summer rock, and the quartet has serious post-grad plans to make a living off their music. Catch 'em at AS220 on April 22. - Providence Phoenix

"BRU Bio: Rock Hunt Semifinalist, Last One Out"

Last One Out, one of our 12 semifinalists for BRU’s Rock Hunt 2011, is a group of four college seniors. The band was formed two years ago, after three roommates and a floor mate decided to start playing together. After writing their first original song in the bathroom, they decided to keep writing, and have been doing so ever since. Dustin Bailey plays drums, Jeff Gahan plays bass, Scott Mesite plays guitar and does backup vocals, and Scott Royal plays keyboard, synth, and is the main vocalist. The writing process for each song is different, and that is why a lot of their songs are different from other songs they have written. They have a distinct sound, and their music cannot be easily classified into any one genre.

Part of what makes Last One Out unique is the variety of musical backgrounds within the band. To quote their Facebook page, “Scott Mesite is a very talented guitar player who is a music minor and knows a lot about theory. Dustin is a new drummer whose hip-hop influenced beats fused with rock make for excellent jam sessions. Scott Royal’s keyboard playing is influenced by many genres, and his singing is versatile and dynamic. And Jeff has been influenced quite heavily from mainstream rock groups and the big names in rock and alternative. All in all, these four musicians truly integrate the different backgrounds into one unique sound.”

They love to play music, hang out, party, and generally have a good time. Listening to music while driving in a car with the whole band is one of their favorite things to do when they have nothing else better going on. In addition to collaborating as a band, they are a group of great friends that share a love and passion for making music together. They look to continue their music upon graduation this May. - WBRU

"Rock Hunt Rewind: The Spot Underground"

Last One Out:
Think happy, charming, adorable, quirky, and talented and you’ve got Last One Out. The band is a group of cute, boy-next-door types, with varied experience in music that fuse together to make for a great show. The guitarist is technically trained and shows it in his solos, the lead singer plays synth, piano, and occasionally tambourine, and the rest accompany them with their own talents. Reminiscent of the Kooks in most of their music, they sing songs with whimsical lyrics like, “Space kangaroo, bounce if you want to” getting everyone dancing to their silly song. Showing us that they can get serious, the lead singer remarks about how “everyone gets the blues” and leads us into a blues song where we see a whole different side of the band, a deeper voice on the lead singer and an amazing break-down on the guitar. Switching gears again, the band engages the audience, getting everyone dancing and clapping to a more electronic upbeat song. On their last song they play, appropriately “Last One Out,” presenting the audience with three rules: 1) rock hard, 2) sing along, 3) people in the back get crazy. These rules are religiously followed and the band does not fail to kick up the energy even more, impressing us with their ability to rock even harder. The guitarist even pulls a stunt where he plays from behind his head, wowing the crowd. Last One Out went out but with a bang. - WBRU
