Since its beginnings in 1997, Last Train Home has evolved from a part-time band in Washington D.C. to a full-time touring unit based out of Nashville.

Named Washington D.C.'s "ARTIST OF THE YEAR" in 2003, Last Train Home went full-time the same year. Its frontman, Eric Brace, is a former staff writer for The Washington Post where he was a music columnist covering the local music and nightlife scene. Brace has played in several Washington area bands, including B-Time, the Beggars, and Kevin Johnson & the Linemen. He ran a local rock label, Top Records, for many years, before focusing on his own music.

The band has played more than a thousand shows over the years, including tours of Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and the Virgin Islands.

The latest CD, "Six Songs," was released on the Red Beet Records label that Eric founded in 2006. With six full-length recordings under its belt, along with a Christmas EP and another collection of cover tunes, Last Train Home is a prolific band that gets better with each passing release. With no signs of slowing down, Last Train Home is one of the most dynamic and compelling bands on the landscape of American music.

Lyrics

Hendersonville

Written By: Eric Brace

Lay me down up on the hill

With my wildwood blossom still

Side by side, beneath the dirt

In a place where nothing hurts

Finally somewhere nothing hurts

Lay me down beneath the stone

Say goodbye to skin and bone

Guess I'll find out where you go

I get so weary when I roam

Am I on my way back home

Lay be down in clothes of black

I'm moving on, I can't look back

'Cause I'm following right behind my true love

I can't make her wait to long

No, she's already waited to long

Lay me down in Tennessee

Where my grave will always be

But my soul, my soul is here among

In every song I've sung

In all the songs we've ever sung

You lift me up when you lay me down

Six white horses coming round

And she's riding, riding with a smile

Singing "We shall fly away in the morning

Oh, John, let's fly away"

Fly away, fly away

Fly away, fly away

Like two birds from these prison walls

We shall fly away, O Glory

We shall fly away

Go Now

Written By: Eric Brace

At the break of the day it's good luck and godspeed
I've got some advice but it's less than you'll need
You'll find the road long, so wear the good shoes
And find a good song to chase off the blues

You think you don't know, but you really do
Which direction to go
I see your eyes with questions and hope
And a flame starting to grow

CH
I see your hands on your old guitar
You'll grow a thick skin and you'll break a few hearts
Singing to drunks at the end of the bar
So pick up your bags and go now

Whatever you find there, wherever you are
Will fill up your heart 'til it aches
Be brave enough to let it all in
And always give more than you take

At the end of the day, you'll be miles away
I hope that you get a good start
I'll be where you left me, but I'll be inside you
Way down deep in your heart

CH
I see your hands on your old guitar
You'll grow a thick skin but they'll still break your heart
And don't get too drunk at the end of the bar
Pick up your bags and go now
Just pick up your bags and go now

Today Today

Written By: Eric Brace

Something I was hoping would happen
Happened today
Something I've been dreaming of
Just came true
Sometimes a kiss is just a kiss
(Hello, goodbye)
When it's from you a kiss is everything

I've had this moment in my head
For a very long time
I see your perfect lips
Coming close to mine
I know, I know, I know
Nothing is forever
I know, I know
But I can dream

Today, today, today
You're my baby
Maybe tonight, tonight
You'll be my baby still
I can dream today, today

I used to wonder how you could
Be so blind
I thought you must have seen me
Shaking inside
If I have to be the one to say
What I'm feeling
I'll just tell you with a kiss

Today, today, today
You're my baby
Maybe tonight, tonight
You'll be my baby still

Because today, today
You're my baby
And now tonight, tonight
You'll be my baby still

I Know A Bird

Written By: Eric Brace

I know a bird she sings for me
I know a bird she sings for me
Late at night she sings for me
But she's far, far away

When I lay down I feel her love
When I'm down I feel her love
Late at night I feel her love
Though she's far, far away

The sun so high will melt my soul
But the stars late at night
They're colder than cold
Feel like I've been counting
Every grain of sand, every grain
In a desert
Where I'm quickly growing old
Growing old

I lost a friend I lost one more
I lost a friend I lost one more
Late at night I think about my friends
And hope they're far, far away

(solo)

The sun so high will melt my soul
But the stars late at night
They're colder than cold
Feel like I've been counting
Every grain of sand, every grain
In a desert
Where I'm quickly growing old
Growing old

When I come back will you know me
When I'm back will you know me
Late at night when I'm back in your arms
Will you be far, far away

I know a bird she sings for me
I know a bird she sings for me
Late at night, she sings for me...

Once in a While

Written By: Eric Brace

Once in a while I think of you
At the strangest times
In the strangest place
Once in a while I remember you
With all my heart
And it takes my breath away

I'm still hoping I can see you
See you again
I really wish that I could see you again

Well I hope that my Melinda
Is kidding when she says
She can read my mind
You know I love my Melinda
But she, she's the jealous kind

And I'm still hoping I can see you again
I wonder what I'd give if I could see you again

Maybe I'm afraid to know
Maybe I'm afraid

Once in a while I cry a little
Late at night
When there's no one else around
Feeling sorry for myself again
I think of all the time that's passed
And I wonder where it's gone

And I'm still hoping I can see you
See you again
I really wish that I could see you again
