"Latanya To Star Off-Broadway"

Latanya Farrell and Javier Colon will be featured this month in Songs in the Key of Life, part of the Edwards, Angell, Palmer & Dodge Off-Broadway Series at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford.

Songs in the Key of Life takes numbers from Stevie Wonder’s 1976 milestone recording, rearranging them without dialogue to tell the story of an African American family. Farrell and Colon are part of a six-person cast that tells the story through a capella singing with only a drumbeat and percussion. - UNotes, Feb 2006

"Latanya Farrell Wins Talent Contest"

Latanya Farrell, a teacher at Chippens Hill Middle School, is now a star.

In fact, the West Hartford resident even gave out her first autograph Monday after winning the Connecticut Star Search contest Saturday sponsored by WFSB Channel 3. The contest was part of the festivities of Riverfest 2003.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook," Farrell said. Friends, fellow teachers, students and family members have been calling her since the contest was broadcast.

"I always tell my sixth- and seventh-graders to take advantage of opportunities," Farrell said. "This was an opportunity for me," she added.

Farrell entered the contest at the urging of her hairdresser. She said she used to sing a lot in church when she was younger, but has no plans to pursue a professional career. She likes teaching, she added.

Farrell, 31, taught kindergarten and first grade at Stafford School for seven years before moving to the middle school. She has been on family leave since she gave birth to her daughter, Jordan, three months ago. Farrell has since been home with Jordan and her 2-year-old son, Jason Jr., or "Cubby" as he’s known to family and friends.

After a dozen attempts to make a videotape to send to the station, Farrell finally gave up and sat down in a chair, feeding her daughter as she sang "Hero," recorded originally by Mariah Carey. The phone was ringing in the background, but she just kept singing, Farrell said.

Shortly after her husband dropped off the tape, people from the station and Bristol resident Chantele Doucette -- winner of CBS’ Star Search contest -- left a message informing her she was a finalist.

Farrell performed "God Bless America" and won the contest Saturday evening.

"I cannot wait until school starts to talk with the kids about it," she said. - Bristol Press, 2003
