"Summatime Listening"

I’ve reached my late 20s and it’s the only time in my life so far that I’ve felt marginally cool. I get this feeling of coolness from the music that has been filling my ears. I’ve been swimming in a lot of tunes, of which probably 90% is the “old stuff” and the rest is all this up and coming music that gets me excited about the (he)art of music. It’s in that 90% I really feel at home, that I feel recharged. I’ve made no secret of my love of southern power pop and following in the path of the Big Stars and R.E.M.s before them, Lately David has carved out a sound all their own with all the appropriate salutes to their heroes. If you love, or even LIKE power pop, check these guys out. They’ve recently released a Special Edition of their album, “All the New Information” on iTunes, adding the especially fantastic gem “Lovely There in Spring.” Vocalist Danny McGreger’s voice is one of those long gone from rock songs, a voice that keeps a sharp edge, but is a perfect pair with a soaring chorus and that jangling guitar that delights me so. My other personal favorite is “Old Miss America,” a three-minute rock party that deserves sunny afternoons and road trips. Rock on, LD.

You can find Lately David on iTunes at In an inspiring effort to support local art & music, Hernando, MS - based Lately David will donate 50 cents per each downloaded track (during the month of June) to the DeSoto Arts Council. Go get great tunes and donate some change, y’all!

Pop music played loudly.
That phrase appears beneath the band Lately Davids stylized moniker in printed promotional materials as a logo a catchphrase with a bold swagger and an unfiltered simplicity. For the band, the phrase has become equal parts mission statement and marketing message; a tag line and a goal line, both distilled down to their essences and presented in four simple words. And the concept behind those words it's played out both in live performance and on record in the bands music.

Hernando, Mississippi-based Lately David draws upon influence from the likes of REM, The Who, The Beach Boys, and Memphis, Tennessee's seminal Big Star to write and perform pop music with wit, attitude and an edge. The band's live performances feature a loud, brash brand of pop music chock full of material from their two self-released albums that meld the attitude of 1970s glam, the sounds of 1980s post-punk, and the hooks of modern pop.
