What a fantastically phenomenal debut CD from a group of extremely talented musicians to encompass Laura Beth's beautiful vocals and poignant songwriting. 12 originals and 2 covers complete The Mill Sessions: broken-hearted country ballads, gospel tunes for sinners and saints, solidified with some down-right gritty blues on a desperate road weary attempt to recover lost love(r). Deep, dark and foreboding themes are emotional and inspirational throughout with musical composition matching perfectly. I enjoyed the entire CD from beginning to end and still need a dose or two daily, and hopefully you will too. Where the roots of bluegrass and old time run deep in the Blue Ridge, Laura Beth and Clover Hollow are springing up with a new sound that branches into a bridge between the heart of Appalachia and the soul of Americana. Coming from various backgrounds, the band came together in 2007 in Blacksburg, VA, which is nestled in mountains rich in the heritage of bluegrass and old time music. By the time their first cd, The Mill Sessions, was finished in 2010, they were already making a name for themselves. Before finding each other, the members played everything from Memphis blues, straight- up bluegrass, southern gospel, classical, rock among others. Their sound, influenced by the music that comes out of the mountains around them, is distilled to something totally new and refreshing. Melodies that run clear and instrumentals that run strong under beautifully soulful vocals and thoughtful lyrics, flow convincingly and passionately.
