"Personal experiences set to song"

Exeter singer songwriter Laura Dugmore is about to enter a recording studio and take that big step all artists dream of, recording the debut EP.

Laura has spent many years working her way up the ladder of success and with a new band in place things are finally taking off for her.

When she came in to record a special acoustic performance for BBC Radio Devon Introducing she told me just how much has changed for her over the past 12 months.

"I wanted to find some focus and Jay, Stuart (her band members) and I began to experiment with old recordings and found a set that we were happy with," she said.

She is certainly a natural when it comes to performing; I sensed straight away that she is completely at one with her music right now and her sound is exactly where she wants it.

It's not just the sound that has changed for Laura, as she explained.

"I feel a lot more confident, it was really great meeting Jay and Stuart and now we just like to keep all the music sounding fresh."

The sound that 20-something Laura has settled on is also accompanied by tales of personal experiences she has lived through, and writing about them isn't at all uncomfortable.

"Whenever anything went wrong through my university years my dad would always tell me it's great songwriting material so now it's almost a form of therapy for me."

That is certainly the case when it comes to one of her tracks, Mr Please, it was written at a particularly tough point of her life.

"I went travelling to Peru and ended up bringing back a nasty parasite.

"It lead to me suffering from chronic fatigue and wrote this song when I was feeling really low, but it's an uplifting song which comes from the heart.

"I like to try and connect with the audience through my songs and I hope they get that when listening to my music or watching me play."

Laura plans on entering the Soundhouse studios at the Exeter Phoenix towards the end of October 2009 and release the EP towards the end of November 2009.

"Laura's song selected for prestigious mixed tape"

The star of one young Devon singer is on the rise after she was chosen from hundreds of entries to feature on a mixed-tape produced by Mercedes-Benz that will be distributed worldwide. Exeter-based singer-songwriter Laura Dugmore has been chosen alongside nine other European artists to be featured on Blue Moods which is available to download free until December 15.

The track they have chosen is Gone from Laura's EP J'aime La Vie.

"When I'm writing songs it's very personal and often about observations, personal experiences and emotions in my own life. So when someone says, 'Yes, I like that', it's almost a validation of myself as a person as I've really put myself out there and made myself vulnerable," says Laura, who was born in Kent, bred in Hampshire but now calls Devon home, after studying at Dartington College of Arts.

Bio

Laura Dugmore is a singer songwriter born in Kent, bred in Hampshire and seduced by Devon where she now resides. She studied classical piano and cello from a young age then self taught the guitar with the later addition of singing. She decided to explore alternative routes after taking a Gap Year travelling to South America. She then studied at Dartington College of Arts, where she focused on her singing and developing her songwriting craft.

Having graduated with a high 2:1 BA Hons in Music performance, Laura found herself in London, dipping her toes in the music scene, working with production company Friction (as a featured artist on 'Santiago Blues' released on a label in Spain), various bands and played cello for BBC 2 Young Chorister of the Year.

Laura now lives in the South West writing and performing with her band as well as enjoying the laid back lifestyle including surfing. Having just completed a successful tour which included the highlight of supporting Nick Harper, her music has been described as "charming folk/pop!" (Cavern Club) with the BBC quoting "She is certainly a natural when it comes to performing, she is completely at one with her music" after she performed twice on the BBC Devon Introducing show.

2010 saw the release of her debut EP titled "J'aime La Vie" meaning "I Like Life". This includes 5 original tracks as well as the Mereceds-Benz Mixed Tape featured track "Gone". For downloads visit: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/laura-dugmore/id385794912
