"Singing vet takes up challenge"

Central Elgin’s Laura Palumbo sings a song of her own called Simple Plan in this week’s Reaney’s Pick video.

Simple? The St. Thomas-raised Palumbo is also a veterinarian and has helped treat the cats of London rockers.

She’s also an award-winning pop performer and songwriter.

She just opened at Casino Rama for Italian star Piero Mazzocchetti.

She was just in New York for negotiations that might lead to a songwriting deal.

Fellow students at Central Elgin secondary school included movie star Rachel McAdams and NHL star Joe Thornton. She once tutored Thornton when he was in Grade 9 and just sent birthday greetings to McAdams.

Through a friendly connection, she has worn the shoes of tiny rock god Prince.

Does any of that sound simple?

“I would say right now it’s 50/50,” Palumbo says of the way she divides her time between her music and veterinary practice. On Saturday, Palumbo performs at Jim Bob Ray’s on Richmond Row in London at the $100 Challenge charity event.

Organizers say the challenge asks people to take $100 and spend it “creating magic for strangers randomly.”

They say the acts of kindness, from going to a coffee shop and paying for a bunch of people to going into a restaurant and paying for a family’s meal, to buying shoes for a child that might be struggling, are up to the givers’ imaginations.

“You need a dream and a simple plan,” Palumbo says of the song heard to her solo guitar accompaniment in Wednesday’s video shoot. Palumbo also plays piano and accordion. She offered to switch to the accordion as part of her performance on Wednesday, but it was decided to keep it simple and guitar only.

Palumbo has always had a plan. And a dream.

“Through biomedical sciences (at Guelph) and all the way through veterinary college, I knew that I wanted to be a rock singer. I even auditioned to be the lead singer of a heavy metal band,” she says.

Palumbo, the singer, hasn’t turned into a metalhead.

But Palumbo, the mobile veterinarian, has helped the cats of London metal icon and Helix frontman Brian Vollmer.

Who says plans don’t come true?

"Award-Winning Songstress Laura Palumbo Fa ‘na Bona Jobba in the 2010 CHIN Italian Idol Competition"

- Italian/Canadian Singer WINS FIRST PLACE in ORIGINAL SONG Category -

Toronto, ON; September 7, 2010 – As the beloved Johnny Lombardi always said, Laura Palumbo
[loosely translated into English] ‘did a good job’ this past weekend. Palumbo took FIRST Place in the Italian Idol Competition, during the CHIN festivities at the Royal Theatre on College St. in Toronto.

“I am thrilled to be part of such an institution, and participate in the Johnny Lombardi CHIN Italian Idol. Performing to the Italian community and being in the company of such incredible performers, I am ecstatic to have won this competition. Viva L’Italia!” exclaims an honoured Palumbo.

Performing “Tu sei il mondo per me” to a packed house, Palumbo dazzled judges with her high-energy performance. The track is an Italian translation of her first single “You Are,” from her debut EP “What are you thirsting for?” A powerful compilation of 6 rock/pop gems, Palumbo was privileged to work with a very talented team including Producer Chris Testolini, and Engineer Stu Young (Juno-winner for his work on Prince’s Musicology.

In the summer of 2010 Palumbo also placed 3rd in Canada in the Virgin Radio FM 99.9 Canadian Radio Star, National Song Writing contest, for the same track, “You Are”. Born to Italian immigrant parents, she performs in English, French and Italian. Trained in the Bel Canto singing method, she also plays the piano, guitar, saxophone and accordion. Palumbo is a true multi-talent as a singer… songwriter… performer... Doctor? Yes, in addition to working as a performer full time, by day she is also Veterinarian, Dr. Laura.

"Accordion playing vet rawks NYC"

Well, Laura is not actually playing her accordion in the Big Apple. Just got off the phone with her. Apparently, she’s in NYC after a gig at Casino Rama & there are some negotiations going on . . . might lead to a video.

Congratulations, Laura. I’ve been intrigued by the accordion which is part of the Laura Palumbo universe when she’s in traditional Italian song mode . . . she also plays piano & guitar & sings.

What’s happening now is much more likely in a pop rock vein. Which she has the chops for too.

What with Laura of St. Thomas & viral video honcho Mike Tompkins of Ilderton (and now London) on the Today show on Monday, we have some London region talent making its move this week.

Keep a-rawkin, Laura . . . veterinarian, accordion player, singer . . . rawker. Wow.
